  1. I got into University of Denver with a 32k scholarship! Just got the e-mail
  2. I applied around 2/9, I think, and found out on March 1, which was way earlier than I expected. I was notified via e-mail. I found out the next day that I was awarded a $10,000 scholarship, and have applied for more (because I need more if I go). I won't hear back from all the other programs I applied to until like April, probably, so I asked for an extension to USC. Hopefully I'll hear about scholarships before then. I'm sure you'll hear back soon, I think it depends on what your concentration is. It's such a huge program I'm sure they have different processes depending on what you're planning to do in the program. I'm betting that they have a lot more folks that apply to the online program, since that can be nation-wide. Hang in there, they normally take 6-8 weeks. Good luck!
  3. I applied to programs like DU because they often automatically award financial and merit based scholarships that make it comparable to other schools. I’ve decided I won’t be attending a program like that unless it’s financially viable. That said, I have my eye on the UChicago SSA program for lots of reasons other than it being a private school, and am drawn to the Latino/Abroad options at DU. For me, as someone who would be paying out of state at any program I attended at a state school, only fairly substantial scholarships would make them the same price.
  4. With your GPA, depending on your experience, you sound like a good candidate for those programs. Schools like WUSTL are generous with aid. University of Chicago’s deadline is April 1. Their app process is also lighter than WUSTL, you don’t need the analytical essay and the personal statement prompt is pretty similar.
  5. Thanks. Did you make it in time to apply for the Dean's scholarship, or were yours need and merit based scholarships?
  6. I got my acceptance to USC today! No word on scholarships, though...
  7. I just got my acceptance to University of Southern California, but there’s no mention of scholarships in my acceptance letter. It’s not my first choice and I for sure couldn’t afford it without scholarships. Still good news though!
  8. I just got my acceptance today, but unless I hear about scholarships later it might be off the table. I can only go if I get funding oops I thought this was a university of Southern California thread. My bad!
  9. @atomizer good luck! I applied to USC and Denver just to see, but they're my last choice. I hear Denver sometimes gives decent scholarships, but maybe it's only to certain people. Where all did you apply? Yeah, I didn't apply to New York City schools, even if I wanted to, because I can't imagine ALSO affording cost of living in New York WUSTL would be cool if I get funding...Saint Louis is cheap
  10. @atomizer, there are more funding options at private schools, especially places like University of Chicago. I live in Portland and Portland State University has a great program, but it's the only program in-state. If I were to get a reasonable scholarship from any of these private schools (95 percent of accepted applicants get scholarships at UofC), it would make it comparable to staying at PSU, and cheaper than going to some out of state public school. Every adviser I've talked to encouraged me to apply to the private schools because of scholarships available and wealth of the programs. I also feel like the field placement options in a city like LA or Chicago would be better than a lot of other places. BUT I'm also from Portland, which is getting pretty expensive already. I also got my undergrad here and am wanting to mix it up. I've seen a LOT of people getting $25,000/ year at Chicago, which would make it roughly $20,000 per year in loans or other scholarships, which is pretty average I'd say. That said, I would never pay that tuition without scholarships. I just think the changes are pretty good of getting funding
  11. @mimimzungu I'm more into the campus option. My first choice is tied University of Chicago SSA/Washington University in St. Louis (WashU), I feel like USC might be a really big program that doesn't have quite as many opportunities for me. But I applied. I had the same LORs for all my schools, generally the letters are specific enough on you and who you are and are able to be sent to other schools/programs, especially if your letters are academic ones, as it's sort of a part of a professor's job and they're pretty used to writing them. Good luck though! You have until March 1 for WUSTL and April first for University of Chicago, if you feel like expanding your options ?
  12. @stheart That's great! Congrats, when did you apply? Is that scholarship per year, if you don't mind me asking?
  13. you'll be relying on scholarships in grad school, not grants. what undergrad grants did you have that covered your full tuition?! "financial aid" also refers to subsidized federal loans, but you'd know if you had to be paying anything back. you're lucky to leave undergrad with no debt!
  14. For Fall 2018? Did you already apply to the schools? Most have winter or spring deadlines.
  15. By financial aid, you mean you paid for all of your undergrad with grants? Or did you have scholarships too? I had the Pell Grant and Oregon opportunity grant and still had to take out federal loans at Portland State University, which is a pretty affordable school in-state. Many private grad schools give a lot of scholarships, and additionally there are scholarships you can apply for, but there are different dates and obligations for many of them. You can take out usually up to $20,500 in federal loans per year (Pell Grant can't be used in Grad School, you'll just be relying on scholarships), and if you need more you can apply for credit-based (or co-signed) GradPLUS loans. I'd read the financial aid info on all the schools you're applying for, as many of them offer different types of aid.
  16. @stheart, There are some really cool things about Saint Louis. I can't picture living there either, but every person I've ever known that has lived in Saint Louis LOVES it. I've been there a weekend visiting a friend...I was blown away by the food and affordability and the city museum. But I didn't get a chance to explore that much
  17. Don't give up hope, definitely! MSW programs tend to have more holistic ways of considering applicants, and some of them aren't as competitive as you'd think. I think USC is somewhat competitive, but it's also a huge program. It sounds like you would have pretty good chances of getting in, especially with those strong letters of recommendations. As far as the personal statement goes, as long as you answered the questions they're probably more concerned about contend; that said, it never hurts to have someone you trust read it (preferable someone with both academic skills AND a knowledge of social science). I sent my SOP to my journalism acquaintance and he tore it up and sent it back to me with my voice gone and the entire meaning changed. I brought it to a sociology professor and they gave me glowing reviews. Are you only applying to USC, though? I applied to 4 schools. If you're set on staying in Southern California, apply to some other schools too if it's not too late. I've decided that if I don't get into a program I want with a decent amount of funding, I'll work for a year to grow and learn, then apply early next year to more programs (when I'm not a full-time student). Never, ever, kiss your dreams goodbye, though. Just know there are other legit MSW programs you could have as back-ups
  18. I can't seem to find a specific Denver University MSW thread, but now that the February 15 deadline has passed, is there anyone else anxiously waiting a response? Anyone accepted already?
  19. It's only been a few days since I applied, and the waiting game is already driving me wild. I'm really counting on (aside from getting in) receiving significant scholarships. I am finishing my undergrad this term (Sociology with a certificate in Chicano/Latino studies) and was eligible for the Pell Grant; I'm a 32 year old returning student...I qualify as low income, I'm sure, and am on the board of directors for a nonprofit I started in 2014 focused on advocacy for the unhoused. Did everyone is this thread that's been accepted receive scholarship funding? I have a 3.3 overall GPA with a 3.96 in the last 70 credits earned. I'm trying to get a feel for how qualified others here are that have been accepted/received significant scholarships. Does anyone mind sharing?
  20. I applied, but sort of recently! I think their deadline is March 1, I bet they will let a batch of us know shortly after
  21. I'm just waiting on one letter of recommendation, then I'll finally be officially applied. Does anyone know if that April 1 deadline significantly affects your chances of getting in/getting funding? I was aiming for January, but no such luck.
