2018 Acceptance/Rejection Thread
Rose-Colored Beetle replied to mynameismyname's topic in Philosophy
I may just be way behind the times, but @Neither Here Nor There just told me that Boston College acceptances have been out for quite a while now. @LORDBACON, @Needle In The Hay, I feel like you guys were waiting to hear back from them too? I take it we're all more or less rejected at this point. -
PHILOSOPHY M.A. ACCEPTANCE/REJECTION 2018
Rose-Colored Beetle replied to buffystrong's topic in Philosophy
No, I was talking about the PhD. Must not have been any offers made to GradCafe-goers, as we were all still waiting in the dark over on the acceptance-rejection thread. Thanks for the tip!- 222 replies

PHILOSOPHY M.A. ACCEPTANCE/REJECTION 2018
Rose-Colored Beetle replied to buffystrong's topic in Philosophy
Did they really? I totally missed it. And I'm not the only one who's been watching this... We're talking about Boston College (not university), right?- 222 replies

Cool, thanks (not that you did it for me). That's probably my top MA, and I was accepted but waitlisted for funding. Now to make a good impression at the visit days this weekend...

2018 Acceptance/Rejection Thread
Rose-Colored Beetle replied to mynameismyname's topic in Philosophy
Well, I'm curious about SLU because I felt that of all 8 applications I filled out, that was my strongest one. Other than my small-ish alma mater and my lackluster (but original and more-or-less decently argued) writing sample, one or both of which must have been the problem. -

Nope, why? Did you see a different sort of rejection from there? -

Just denied at SLU. Boldface type urges me to contact the program if I want to know why. -

Maybe "waitlist" means "the top 5 people we haven't rejected outright" or something. So everyone else who hasn't been rejected outright is de-facto waitlisted. -

But this means that BC is probably snail-mailing acceptances too... I also remember reading that someone was just waitlisted at SLU on Thursday. Since some SLU decisions came out way before that, I think it's safe to say that they use some sort of hidden/expanded waitlist. Man, I wish Fordham were giving you more time. I wonder why they have to decide next week (unless "waitlist" is a possibility for that decision). I can't accept or reject my Fordham offer until I hear back from BC, SLU, and 2 more MA's. -

PHILOSOPHY M.A. ACCEPTANCE/REJECTION 2018
Rose-Colored Beetle replied to buffystrong's topic in Philosophy
In at WMU, but waitlisted for assistantship. Since it's almost unthinkable to do an MA unfunded, as even my acceptance letter implies, I wonder how this is much different from a straight-up waitlist. I'm wondering what qualified those who did get an assistantship, as I already have a little experience in teaching philosophy, collaborative philosophy writing, and conference management. At any rate, at least the acceptance is nice to have.- 222 replies

Nope. I'm curious to know what you all thought of BC's strange application (where you basically construct your transcript), as well as whether anyone listed Peter Kreeft under faculty that interest you. I debated that one, and ended up including him. -

Either way, it was sort of cold. Socrates would agree with you... "No one can come to the aid of the written word."

PHILOSOPHY M.A. ACCEPTANCE/REJECTION 2018
Rose-Colored Beetle replied to buffystrong's topic in Philosophy
Religion, language, early modern, ancient. GSU doesn't even cover my tangential interests. The only exception is their German intellectual history guy, who would have been great to work with.- 222 replies

Sorry :/ The different quotes are entertaining though. Both of my rejections so far have been super gentle. Like a very compassionate breakup letter. -

I should probably refrain from late-night comments... I feel sort of bad now. I at least shouldn't have presumed incredulous_stare's situation before generalizing. At any rate, yeah, you can't argue with placement history. I do wonder whether the bias is unwarranted, you know? Like, maybe the 'top' institutions really do prepare better tenure-trackers.
-
I'm really sorry if I was condescending. I wasn't trying to be mean at all. I find it encouraging to know that even if all PGR-top-20 schools reject a small-school student like me, I still have a chance at a top-tier program (since PGR only measures a very particular type of 'top-tier').
-
Yes, that's me to a degree. The thing is, though, enchantment with PGR per se is not a good thing, as I've come to understand. PGR is a gourmet report; it's what you look at to pinpoint programs heavy in current field leaders, state-of-the-art frontier research, and strength of placement in PGR's own top-ranked schools. It's a specific purpose. So unless you have a narrow drive (and a preference for contemporary analytic philosophy, skepticism of the value of philosophical pluralism, etc.), I wouldn't worry too much about being rejected by PGR top-20s. Conversely, I imagine that a narrowly driven student, regardless of undergrad institution, should be able to craft a sufficiently compelling writing sample in that area. Gourmet is all well and good, but unless I'm on a particular quest for state-of-the-art cuisine, I won't be consulting a Michelin guide.

Sorry, I didn't mean to post twice. I guess this one should be the "official" one.

As far as I am concerned, anyone who has not received a rejection is functionally on a "hidden waitlist." Would sending an email asking about my application status be good, bad, or neutral for such an application? I don't see how it could be significantly good or bad. Yes, it expresses interest, but I don't think it expresses interest significantly more than the time and money that is put into an application. Sure, it may make you look desperate; but committees surely realize that even applicants who have been accepted elsewhere want to consider all their options.
