Columbia Social Work Program Fall 2018

Yeah, I got into Tulane and Simmons, and I just found out I got waitlisted at Boston College. -

They are definitely not the only ones. It’s frustrating but it’s like @lanabeni said we have no real choice in the matter. I’m just really hoping some decisions come out today, even if I don’t get any news! Somehow it’s much more depressing when no one on here hears anything than when I know that they are still (slowly! painfully slowly!) getting back to people. -
Yeah, I sent them an email asking to be put on the active wait list! I don’t expect anything to come of it really but if I did get in that would be amazing.
-
Just talked to BC and confirmed that I have been wait listed! So if anyone else gets that letter, that’s what it means, haha. I feel a little silly for being so confused but I was just really expecting to be rejected, tbh.

Yeah, I do know what you mean! New York is cool but it can also be incredibly depressing and anxiety-inducing. And I’m the same way, I like people but also I need my alone time or I become a very unpleasant person. ? -

Yeah, I lived in the city for three years (I went to NYU for undergrad) and that was pretty much enough for me for life, lol. My best friend lives in Brooklyn and I could maaaaybe make that work for a couple years but I can't imagine settling there long-term. I do see the good things about it, too, obviously (especially since I moved back to my hometown where everything closes at 9pm at the latest), but overall I just find it too overwhelming most of the time. And yeah the rent is truly prohibitive, especially if you don't want to contribute to the whole gentrification epidemic (I'm white, lol). -

Gotcha. I mean for me it's that I wouldn't want to have to move after I get settled in a new place and my partner gets a job there, but if you go to an online program obviously that isn't a consideration. However, most of the online programs that I looked into didn't offer any scholarships, which was a big deterrent. -

That makes sense. I hadn’t thought about transferring but that’s definitely something to consider as well. Does your program start in the summer or fall? -

Ugh, I’m sorry that they didn’t get back to you in time, that sucks. But it sounds like you found a great program regardless! I’m happy for you!! -
Hmm, okay, that’s good to know... they might have just been on lunch when I called or something. I’m assuming 80,000 is a typo? Did you mean 800? I did look into USC, but their online program doesn’t offer any scholarships, and I can’t take on that much debt in good conscience. If need be I will reapply to MSW programs next year. Thank you for the reply and for the kind wishes!

@Patriotsfan17 I don’t suppose you have any insight about the wording of that letter, do you? (You can say you think I was straight-up rejected, I won’t be offended, lol.) Edit: nvm, just saw that you responded. I already emailed them but I’ll probably call too. I guess their offices were closed today because it’s the Monday after Easter?

Ugh, I’m sorry to hear that. I know this has been said many times, but it’s insane that they expect us to wait until mid- to late April. They gotta know that most other schools will require a decision before then. -

Did anyone hear anything today? I am still waiting. -

Btw, congrats on choosing NYU, @Chebrutta!! I’m sure you’ll do great things there. -
Just got the weirdest letter in the mail. It says “we are unable to make you an acceptance offer at this time. Please email swadmit@bc.edu if you would like to be put on the active wait list.” Does this mean I was rejected, or wait listed? Do you think they offer everyone who is not accepted a place on the wait list? I am so confused!!! Any help would be very appreciated!!!

Thank you! I really hope so too! Did anyone hear back from BC today? Just asking because I know they usually send decisions out around 11am.

Yeah, that’s a good point. The girl who answered the phone when I called Friday sounded super young and I have a feeling she was like a student employee. But something weird definitely happened in @Sunset95‘s case. Maybe it’s different if you give them a deadline? Idk. -

Unfortunately, I think this might be the case, although it shouldn’t be. If they’re going to penalize people for calling then they should say explicitly not to contact them in the application instructions, imho. I don’t know. The email they sent me about getting back to everyone at the beginning of April was very polite and friendly so that really threw me for a loop in terms of the contrast with how they seem to have been treating everyone else. -

It’s possible? I’m not super clear on the details of what happened there, to be entirely honest with you. -
Yay, congrats!! I’m so happy it all worked out for you!

I agree! Like, if they had just said “hey, we’re short-staffed this year and it may take longer to get decisions out, I think most people would have understood, but instead, they just keep giving people the runaround and pretending this is normal and reasonable. It’s so frustrating. But yeah, I really hope all the priority people have heard back as well. If not, that’d be so messed up. ? -

Yeah, I agree - I feel like the process by which they handled your application was very fishy. I remember reading earlier on this thread or the other Columbia thread that a couple of faculty members who normally review applications quit, but of course, we have no way of knowing whether that’s true or not. I just know that last year my friend got a response within two weeks. Idk. That might have been an anomaly but in general the way they’re treating people just doesn’t sit right with me. -

Omg, I know! It’s like, on the one hand, I feel bad complaining because I know you and others waited longer, but on the other, it’s still extremely off-putting because they just keep telling people to ask for extensions instead of owning up to the fact that something clearly went awry this year. It’s so frustrating. -
Hmm. Are you in a position to pay the deposit for Simmons and then see what BC offers you? I’ve heard that they’re usually pretty generous with their packages.
-
Dang. That sounds pretty steep. And what would it be at Simmons? Also, what is your eventual goal with social work? You want to do clinical, I assume?
