    One option is to get the MSW, but to find a way to engage in psychology research while you are in your Masters (and also take as many psych courses as you can). That way, when you finish, you can choose to either go for the Psych PhD or continue on the social work path.

    Yes, like others have reiterated on this thread, I think its a good idea to take some time to reflect and think about where you see yourself in 10, 20 years time   Good luck!

    What kind of career is it that you want? If you want to do clinical practice, you would need a license-eligible degree. At the MA level, that would be an MA in mental health counseling, an MFT, or an MSW (in a few states you can get a license with a clinical psychology MA but that is the exception and not the norm). It may be difficult to find MA programs that have a path to licensure where you could do research within your chosen interest. It's probably easier to find faculty doing that type of research in psychology MA programs, but those are usually not license-eligible. If you go that second route, you want to think about your next steps and job prospects. Regardless of what degree you choose to pursue, you need to really think about it in terms of what kind of job would you like in the future and the credentials necessary to attain that type of job.

    @doctormelodyOh, not at all insulted
    I'm in Canada, so I don't know entirely how the USA works, but 3-4 cycles imply clinical psychology in grad school (be it applying to a Masters that leads to a PhD, or a fast-track PhD program). I'm not 100% sure if you apply for PhD programs in Clinical Psych right off the bat from your undergrad, but based on my browsing of the forums, it takes 3-4 cycles to get into a clinical psychology program.
    Ahhh so it seems your focus, if it was psychology of religion, wouldn't be in clinical psychology. I would presume you would apply to a graduate program in experimental psychology or most likely, social psychology. I'm not sure how competitive those programs are, but it could be a possibility
    So it seems to me that a MSW you directly help people, whereas MA in Psychology (focus on religion) might be more research-based?? I'm not too familiar with Psychology of religion so I'm not sure what career prospects are possible beyond research.

    Thank you so much, this means a lot to me. I know I am not the only one and seeing others (like you!) persevere despite mental health struggles is so inspiring and motivating to me. I'm rooting for you, and for all of us.

    I was accepted into Fordham University’s Advanced Standing program! My application was complete on Jan. 7 - heard back within 16 days.
    My stats aren’t so great, so if anyone is worried just stay hopeful!! Still waiting to hear back from NYU.

    Nice in the summer and fall, but definitely cold in the winter. Today is unusually cold, actually. Absolutely perfect city, though. It will be very hard to leave.

    Yeah I'm advanced standing but most programs only excuse around 12-15 credit hours.

    Thank you for the response! I definitely will consider more affordable programs, like Hunter and other local ones. I haven't done much research on all potential schools yet so I just named a few off the top of my head for now

    It's my pleasure, and we're certainly not alone. My school was a (small) state regional public, so that might present an issue, but it can be worth looking into! Here's the school: https://www.nmu.edu/socialwork  Good luck!

    My situation is a bit different from yours, as I'm looking for a PhD after taking some time after my MFA, but I think 25 is a perfectly reasonable age to get our s*** together. In fact, our brains just finished (or are close to) development. Also, young people now (and we're pretty young) are overloaded with options that take some time to sift through. I did my MA right after undergrad, at 21, because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do but I knew I loved learning. Now, after feeling unsatisfied with my work (full time but not incredibly exciting or particularly related to my ideal career), I know exactly why I want to get my PhD. Still, I have a vision condition that makes reading for long periods hard, which I expect will be a huge challenge. I don't expect there will be many audiobook options. I'm also terrified to move to a city alone (save my beautiful feline companion), at 25.

    That being said, I think you have good motivation for getting another degree. It does sound like you may not have chosen the school which was the best fit for you. I know my school, for example, wasn't extremely stringent with admissions for the MSW and is less than 10k per year (2.5 years) even without scholarships in a small city with a reasonable cost of living and attentive faculty. It's not the only one, I'm sure. Perhaps you could look for smaller programs with more resources to support you in the campus, community, and faculty. But of course, an MSW has to grapple with accreditation and many clinical hours. It will be a challenge anywhere, but I'll tell you from experience as a graduate student myself and from working with them, most of us are wondering if we can do it at least some of the time.
    That being said, if you struggle you can transfer. Just be sure to finish at your school on a good note rather than wait for it to become too much of a challenge. And who knows, maybe you will love it there and surprise yourself!

    I did consider Cleveland State but they just don't have the types of programs other schools like Case/Pitt/OSU do that I applied to. Case in particular is my top choice because they have a health track program for social workers who want to work in hospitals (which i do), they have study abroad options for the health track, they're the first social work school meaning I get a MSSA instead of a MSW, and I could also continue to live with my boyfriend. These are the extra things that make Case important to me, I just need to decide if its worth all that extra money.

    Thank you so much, this is really helpful. Honestly it helps to know just that others are or have been in the same boat, but when it gets to the point of re-reading threads I’ve already read ten times, I think maybe I need to take a step back. I also like what you said about self-efficacy and how we are all more than our grades/experiences/ etc. It’s so hard to remember sometimes, but it’s so important. Best of luck to you with all of your applications, and thanks again for responding.

    Does anyone have any advice on how to stop obsessing about grad school? I sent an email to someone at Pitt today and they haven’t responded yet. I feel like I can’t even enjoy the weekend because I just want it to be Monday so I have a chance of getting a response. I check the mail multiple times a day hoping to see scholarship info (or just any info, really, the letter on the online portal was quite vague). I’m on here all the time. I check threads that aren’t even relevant to me because I’m just desperate for some kind of distraction. It’s getting to the point where it’s annoying my partner and interfering with my life but I just can’t seem to stop.
