  1. Did anyone try emailing their awards department today?
  2. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they haven’t sent them yet, they could just be sending a new one to the new requested address.
  3. I don’t know if it’s the same, but my school has an online portal for the result and it has just said “nominated” for a while now (but apparently changes once they get the results). Yours might mean something, but it also might just be that your SSHRC application was “initiated.”
  4. Fingers crossed about OGS! Related to SSHRC though, I saw last year people who had won Vanier got an email to decline their SSHRC Either the day or the day before SSHRC announced they mailed the results. So those of you who got Vanier, if you could do us a solid and let us know if you get an email like this it would be much appreciated! The worst part of this whole thing is the uncertainty around when we’ll know the results! I’ve made peace with the possibility of not getting it, but it’s still terrible to be in limbo.
  5. I bit the bullet and emailed SSHRC to ask when they expected to mail the results and they still said the end of April, so it sounds like they're caught up. Sure wish they could be a bit more specific than "the end of April" though... some might consider now to be the end of April...
  6. To be honest I still haven’t found an ideal way to balance all of my responsibilities (I’m a TA and and RA), but one thing I have been doing is using Trello to keep track of all my projects and tasks, and then plan out my tasks at the beginning of every week. I also use an app called Toggl to keep track of how many hours I’m spending on my RA and TA work. I find having set tasks is less overwhelming to my brain, instead of saying “now spend 5 hours doing this” I can focus on accomplishing something and I’m more productive. Then timing the tasks allows me to make sure I’m spending the right amount of time on each project each week.
  7. I don’t have much experience in this, but can’t you also put declined fellowships on your CV? So that when you’re applying for things people can still see that you were selected? Or is it more that you want to be able to say you’re a “_______” fellow?
  8. I agree with all the advice that has been given so far. One thing I wanted to add was to make sure you know exactly what you can expect for income for each semester. In my program tuition is always covered and then we get a TAship for our funding package, but the TAship is only 2 semesters and my program is year round. If your income may vary by semester it’s a good idea to plan ahead and save so that you have enough to get through the lower income semesters (or find another source of income for those semesters). I tend to not only budget by month, but also semester and year. Other advice I have, and this varies by school and program, but I would recommend networking and getting to know faculty in your program because you never know who might end up needing a research assistant and they might think of you. A prof in my department needed a couple students to do a lit review because he needed to use up his grant funding for the year and none of his PhD students could do it so he asked a couple of my friends. I’m also an RA on a project because the prof heard from one of her students that I was really interested in the area of research and recommended me. Networking is a very real tool my friend. It also doesn’t hurt to scan your school’s job site. I have one friend who makes a bunch of extra money doing marking for various departments and classes that don’t have TAs. My point is that often there are extra jobs for grad students around for those who seek them out. (And they usually pay pretty good, the things I’ve mentioned were $25-$30 and hour).
  9. I haven’t heard anything about the funding cuts impacting OGS. My school usually doesn’t announce OGS until the end of April/beginning of May so maybe they just changed their model?
  10. OGS and SSHRC are totally different competitions, but if you made it out of the University for SSHRC (and Vanier and/or Trudeau for some of you) I think you're chance of being ranked high enough to get OGS in your department is pretty good. It's easy to feel discouraged but try to keep some perspective and a little bit of optimism that you'll probably at least get OGS and you are definitely in the running for SSHRC. What I tell myself (whether it's actually right or wrong I don't know) is that I have a very good chance of getting OGS and a decent chance of getting SSHRC, but also that there are many other people applying for these things that are good at what they do so I might not and it doesn't mean I'm terrible (but the boost in income would have also be very nice). The competitions by nature judge us against each other but we should try not to because we all have different paths. I saw on reddit that one person said that the university they work at actually didn't hire anybody who had a SSHRC (doctoral or Phd) in the last couple cycles of hiring even though people with the awards applied. They said that the people who didn't get it actually outperformed the people who did (of the people applying to the job). So at the end of the day whether you get it or don't let's all just keep working hard towards those long term end goals (whatever they are). It's definitely an awesome achievement and endorsement of your abilities, but it's not the be all end all. Having said that. I also have to remind myself to try not to think about it too much since hopefully next week (fingers crossed, but definitely the week after if the last few years is anything to go off of) we will get the results and whatever they are it will be a weight off all of our shoulders. (Until next fall at least for those of us who re-apply...)
  11. Oh thanks! I thought that one was for last year because usually they’re usually dated as the years you start holding the award. I know other people also thought there wasn’t one. I don’t know if you can change the name of the thread but it might help people find it if you change it to 2019-2020.
  12. So I don’t see a thread for this years SSHRC competition so I thought I’d start one. I’m on the edge of my seat to find out the results but from what I’ve read we’ve still got a couple weeks to go... This is my first time applying to SSHRC because I did a professional Masters and the process is crazy nerve wracking.
  13. What department are you in? I haven’t heard back yet but from what I hear people in my department (FIMs) don’t usually hear until late April/early May. edit: just realized that was for last year and was in May. Oops ?
  14. To all of the PhD applicants, something odd is going on. On the results page I saw that someone said they got an email from the ischool office saying that all offers had been sent out. However, I got an email about my application today saying that they don't have my results yet and "everything is still under review by the committee". I'm a bit confused about why they're saying different things to different people.
  15. The registrar just told me that they haven't made a decision on my application yet. So stressful! The other school gave me an extension to reply though which is good!
  16. So I got a reply. He said that the committee hasn't made all of their decisions yet and my application is still being reviewed, but they're meeting again this Thursday. So if they make a decision on your application this Thursday those will be communicated either Friday or early next week. (I'm guessing in February they sent out offers to the clear candidates and now they're going back to sort through the ones they were unsure of, or maybe they just decide on applications as they go and we're just further down the list. My last name is towards the end of the alphabet lol, who knows) So definitely still hope!
  17. I applied to the PhD program but still "under review". I emailed one of the registrar's early yesterday to try to find out when a decision would be made because I have another offer that I need to respond to by March 15th but have not heard anything back. So incredibly stressful. U of T is definitely my first choice.
  18. I applied to the PhD program but haven't heard back yet. I was accepted to my 2nd choice and need to give them a decision by March 15th which is stressful when I don't know U of T's decision. I saw a PhD admission from last week on the results page. Anybody else hear anything?
