  1. Let me know if you have questions about Columbia's program!
  2. Anupama Rao at Columbia is awesome. Also, I know a MESAAS 2018 PhD who just got a professor position at a liberal arts college.
  3. Re: your last point, did you sign up for IBR (Income Based Repayment) plan? I only have to pay $188 a month for my loans, and they'll (hopefully) be forgiven after 10 years of public service.
  4. I'm not saying I'll be dishonest. I did disclose this incident on the Columbia app and they overlooked it. I'm just wondering if they'd discover this somehow.
  5. Wouldn't FERPA protect educational records though?
  6. At one of my previous institutions, I faced disciplinary action (behavioral, not plagiarism/cheating). I applied to and was accepted to grad school for the fall 2018, but I was permitted to defer to fall 2019. I was asked about disciplinary actions on the application and disclosed my history. What impact, if any, would this have on my academic life or career later on? Is it necessary to tell this to an adviser? I have no criminal record whatsoever, just a scholastic rapsheet, FWIW. Would employers ever find out about this?
  7. I emailed Career Services at Columbia. They offer funding for unpaid summer internships for undergrads but not grad students. ?
  8. Wow, that sucks. I don't think I could do it without funding. ?
  9. Are the UN internships paid?
  10. I'm thinking like Policy Analyst positions. I'm particularly interested in UNICEF, UNESCO, UNHCR, and UN Women. What kind of background would be ideal? Is prestige (school rank, grades) important for hiring? I am fluent in Spanish and Hindi, FWIW, and have international work experience.
  11. Thanks! That seems like a more realistic goal (after several years of practice, that is) than TT prof positions at law schools.
  12. MA in law or philosophy?
  13. Given your goals, it is imperative for you to attend a top 14 law school, HYS in particular. (Though Columbia and U of Chicago are also solid options for academia).
  14. OP, many SJD programs require having a JD first.
  15. Thanks! I am interested in non-tenure track positions (i.e. teaching in clinics or skills based courses)...is hiring for these less prestige-obsessed?
  16. Did anyone here apply to this program?
  17. OP, were you accepted to this program?
  18. I'm a recent JD grad, currently clerking for a judge (two years). Legal academia, particularly clinical legal teaching, would be my dream job. Would getting an L.L.M./Ph.D./S.J.D. in law help towards obtaining such a position?I was an OK but not great student in my JD program, and I know that hiring for academia can be very elitist.
  19. Well, good for you for making it to the finish line! My dad still gives me hell over taking 6 years to graduate law school instead of 3. ?
  20. In Indian culture, you need to live life in a linear fashion-finish school, get married, buy a house, have kids, by certain ages. The pressure is real.
  21. They have courses on Buddhism, Christianity, Sikhism, Hinduism, etc., and they are free unless you want a printed certificate. I feel I really need to get up to speed!
  22. You're probably right! I am concerned about age discrimination tho.
  23. Thanks. I don't plan to get a PhD (I'm too old to start-2010 college grad here). I'm interested in human rights/UN work/international development.
  24. OP, did you apply to any other programs, whether in the US or abroad?
