Are the clinical fellowships you mentioned entry-level positions? (I'm a 2017 law grad). Are the fellows normally hired permanently at the end of the 1-2 year term?

Hmm...I should look into whether single mother adoption is allowed in my jurisdiction. I definitely have a strong nurturing instinct.

There's no continuing background check based on my research. I was just concerned that future employers would somehow find out.

Grad school and mental illness--how do you cope?
MettaSutta replied to miss-prufrock's topic in The Lobby
Hugs to you. I was misdiagnosed Bipolar as well, from 2013-2016. Now I have PTSD and MDD. Law school was a miserable slog. It took me 6 years instead of 3 to complete my JD program, and I faced significant disciplinary issues due to behaviors stemming from my symptoms. Due to my diagnosis and said disciplinary issues I'm facing hurdles in getting a law license. Got into a graduate program (deferred to fall 2019) and things are looking up. -
30/F myself and hopelessly single. I can definitely empathize with your situation as an educated WOC navigating romance. I was in your boat at 25 as well. Didn't have my first relationship (and was a virgin) until 28. I wish I could tell you "it gets better", but, at least in my case it hasn't. Last week I was rejected by a very promising guy because his parents didn't approve of me on account of our horoscopes not matching. Such bullsh*t. Taking time to recharge and focus on self-care has helped me get over the "almost relationships".

Doesn't your university have a free counseling center? You don't have to go through this alone. (I have horrid social phobia myself and have availed myself of therapists, psychiatrists, and support groups).

Yes. I have psychiatric disabilities, and they have really held me back academically and professionally. It took me double the amount of time to finish law school-6 years instead of 3-due to taking multiple mental health leaves. However, unlike most recent law grads I ended up graduating with a job lined up that's full-time, long-term and JD required. So I did pretty well for myself in spite of it all.

Has anyone here applied for a Fulbright in Nepal?

What are your 4 dream jobs? Are you qualified for any of them?
MettaSutta replied to Authorization's topic in Jobs
1. Law Professor 2. Attorney (nonprofit/NGO, not private sector) 3. Something at the UN (like Policy Analyst) 4.) Law Librarian I am sadly not qualified for any of these. -
Ugh, I'd love to do YPP, but I'll be 33 by the time I graduate my program, so I miss the age cutoff.

Does anyone here know whether Columbia GSAS offers TA-ships to terminal MA candidates? (I've been emailing people in my department, but no response). -
Yes. At Columbia there are courses in the South Asian Studies program in the religion, history, anthropology, law, international/public affairs, etc. departments.

Didn't see a thread for this, so I thought I'd create one!

Earlier this year, I was accepted with a partial merit scholarship to such a program at Columbia for fall 2019; while I was initially overjoyed, I'm starting to get cold feet due to the price-tag and opportunity cost (i.e. not earning full time for two years). What have those with terminal MAs in Asian Studies gone on to do after they complete their programs? I have a law background and am particularly interested in human rights; I also speak, read and write Hindi. I'm interested in public sector-NGOs, gov't and academia.
