  1. I don't see any harm in asking! Just mention how you are wondering about your status (maybe mention you have an offer somewhere) and tell them you are still very interest in the program and would like any update. I am sure the grad admissions people will understand being anxious about info. Edit: Sorry for the double post!
  2. Last year I was on 3 waitlist and got offers at 2 of the schools which I turn down. So depending on the competitiveness (I don't know anything about Va tech) you can have a decent chance so don't lose hope!
  3. Congrats on the acceptance! I will ask the students in the program what their cost of living is like in the Area first. I would be worry about taking out loans because I don't think you will get great interest rates on them plus it's not like you will make a lot of money in the first 3 years of a PHD haha.
  4. Well, this year I worked with a private company that was basically had me teaching middle school math and you can spin that as it being helpful in the I/O because you need to learn presentation skills etc. Not sure how much it help me other than using it to reinforce my interest in going to academia.
  5. I don't want to be too negative since my experience last year doesn't mean it happens this year but UGA is very highly regarded so it's tough to see a lot of applicants turning down those spots (especially since you are not on the shortlist). I think the general waitlist for top program is more like break glass if an emergency situation where the programs have more people than they figure to turn down their offers and have to go deeper into their applicant pool. I believe this was my spot with USF this year where they have not rejected me but since they have not contacted me it feels like they don't really want me unless it's a desperate spot. Sorry for being such a downer and best of luck!
  6. From experience last year UGA had me on a waitlist but they did not provide many updates unless I emailed the perspective POI about my status so I will suggest trying doing that. But UGA is very competitive so I am not sure how likely it is to get off their waitlist (I got rejected last year like April 8th) Best of luck and hopefully you already have a program!
  7. I, of course, don't know the school in question so I can only guess why they are putting pressure when they shouldn't (At least this early on a month before the deadline). It could be that that school is lower ranked so this is their way of "pressure" top students to go there. Or the admission team is just hoping you make a decision as early as possible because they know they have a lot of interested applicants on the waitlist who really want to go there. Or it can be the unlikely event that the professor is being a jerk about this. Who knows but you just have to look out for yourself here. Yea it might get awkward with the other professor but it's your right to wait to see all possible offers before deciding and you should not feel bad about it since it's the smart thing to do. Best of luck though!
  8. I just formally accepted my offer to Albany for their I/O psych program! I am very excited to start and work with my advisor who seems great. I could have waited to hear back from the last remaining schools but I really think this is the best program. Thank you all here for the kind words and I hope you get a similar joy come April 15
  9. Ah I see https://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/116066-waitlist-and-help-me-decide-thread-2019/ maybe this will work? Or for more general help this might be more useful https://forum.thegradcafe.com/forum/54-decisions-decisions/
  10. In terms of how people decide between programs or in terms of getting more specific details between the programs?
  11. If your end goal is a PHD then I will take the offer now if you think it's a good program for you in terms of prestige/funding/research interest.
  12. I get angry when I apply to a program to work with a specific PI and after I paid for the application the POI emails me to say they won't be taking students so I can't imagine how you guys/gals feel about a whole program not taking anybody. There should be refund unless Houston can somehow prove that there was nobody who applied who meets their standards of an applicant (Which can't be true since I am sure some person who get in Michigan State tier program applied to Houston as a backup)
  13. Well finally got my rejection letter from Penn State lol. Oh well I was told the POI I wanted to work with was not taking students this cycle after I paid the application fee ?
  14. My Penn State application portal just says a decision has been made and I will get word shortly. So either my email got lost somewhere or they are taking their sweet time to wait list me.
  15. I am not sure if I will go to Penn State even if offered but it can't hurt the self esteem to get another acceptance
  16. Hi was it a mass rejection email or did you check the portal thing? And congrats on your acceptance!
  17. With the way you are describing it seems your heart is made up and wants to go to 1.
  18. Ha yea I was talking to someone else in the same spot and we agreed that we are basically the emergency list in case they get a lot of unexpected rejections. I would think they will email us if they wanted us to keep our options open.
  19. I just checked and nothing there. I am assuming I am on some alternative waitlist way down the list of possible candidates.
  20. Can the person who posted their rejection from USF DM me how they found out? I checked my status and don't see an update.
  21. If you want to go into academy I will definitely look elsewhere.
  22. I am sure it was fine. I think they expect some awkwardness for phone talks and know you can be a bit stress out.
