  1. If I remember (I hope I will!) then I hope to return here and share advice/information as well.
  2. I agree with the above post - the original poster doesn't seem to be hating on top-rated programs, rather saying that it's okay to go to programs that are less well-known or popular. And I think that's a really important idea to spread! Of course you should be proud of yourself regardless of where you get in, no matter where it is or how highly-ranked it is, and it's alright if you don't go to the most competitive, expensive, famous programs. As long as your program is accredited (or on track for accreditation) you'll get your CCC's, and know what you need to know to do your job. I think regardless of major, it can be easy for us to gravitate towards schools that are high-rated and often-mentioned, but as has been said, all programs have their pros and cons and it's less about what program is "the best" vs. what program is the best for you. That's not a bad message to be sharing at all!
  3. As far as I know it's not required (though I could be wrong...) it's just general practice. But who knows!
  4. I have no idea! I'm not from NC so I'll be out-of-state (which will be true at any school, but if I get into Bridgewater the tuition is incredibly cheap, and I might be in the running for a GA position at some schools, so I'm just waiting to find out!). It's good to hear that housing is cheap though! What would you say the average rent is?
  5. Please let us know what you hear back! I'm probably going to accept but keep later rejecting my acceptance as an option... I just haven't even heard back from some of my other schools, so I don't know how I can be expected to make a decision. ? It's going to depend largely on which one is the best option financially...
  6. I'm actually in a similar situation with NCCU! I'm planning to accept and hopefully there won't be any consequences if I back out later. (I like the school a lot and I'd love to go there but... I'm waiting to hear back on a GA position at another school, and I'd like to wait a bit longer to hear about funding, or at least hear back from some of the other schools I applied to!)
  7. I would say wait longer, because March seems to be THE MONTH that a lot of schools start sending out decisions. I did contact one school that I applied to through CSDCAS that doesn't have its own portal, just to ask how we'd hear back, and they responded promptly and helpfully (through email, sometime this month) - but unless you have specific questions apart from "When will I hear back?" I'd advise against it. It's probably not a terrible idea, but in all likelihood they're working on it. Maybe near the end of March if you haven't heard back, then you could contact schools, or if you see that many people have heard back from one school but you haven't heard from that specific school yet.
  8. I applied to 6! I was going to only do 5, but then I panicked and added a sixth last minute. ? In hindsight I'm kind of wishing I only applied to 3 or 4 of the ones I did, but oh well.
  9. Thank you! And yes, my email is dated only about two hours ago so I'd say they're starting the process now. Good luck, I hope you hear back soon!
  10. Just an update that I was emailed an acceptance to NCCU, so if you're waiting, you can probably expect to hear from them soon! Has anyone else heard back yet?
  11. I got the email first, but I just checked the portal and it says 'decision made' but not specifically that I was admitted, so I think the main decisions must be through email.
  12. They sent out an email a bit ago saying they were starting to review and would let us know in March. I'd anticipate anytime in the upcoming weeks!
  13. I just included it in my resume under work experience, with bullets explaining what I did. I didn't incorporate it significantly into any of my personal statements (I think I only talked about it in one, or maybe two, of them?) because I had other experiences that I chose to highlight instead. In my resume it basically looked like this: [CAMP NAME] - Location, Dates CIT Trainer and Unit Leader (dates) Managed and trained 9 counselors throughout the summer Oversaw programming for the youngest children at camp (30-40 kids per week) Developed and implemented a program for 8 counselors-in-training and worked with them for 5 weeks to improve leadership skills Cabin Counselor and Activity Leader (dates) Supervised 7-12 children (ages 8-11) directly and 100 children (ages 6-16) indirectly Developed and facilitated educational and social activities for small and large groups of kids Provided evaluation and supervision for 3-4 activity department members
  14. If anyone is looking for a Plan B, I'd recommend applying to the North American Language and Culture Assistant program with the Spanish Ministry of Education. (Application are open until mid-April!) I've spent the past two years working as an English teaching assistant in Spain, and not only has it been a great opportunity to see Europe and experience living in a different cultural environment, the job has also given me a number of skills that I can take with me to graduate school (in addition to giving you the chance to practice/learn some Spanish!). I'd strongly recommend it. However, there are a number of things you can do for a gap year - one of my friends has spent a few years as a para and she's loved it, and another has worked as an SLPA!
  15. I'm really wondering how anyone is supposed to afford it without taking out a million loans! I'm hoping to work in school too though, and I've actually set up some online teaching jobs that I anticipate continuing as a grad student. It's great because they're flexible and I can work as much or as little as I'm able (plus the companies that I work for don't involve lesson planning). All the same... a scholarship would be nice. ?
  16. Well, it seems that people weren't hearing anything until yesterday, and if they have 300 people who applied they can't possibly notify everyone in one day. So I wouldn't assume anything yet!
  17. I got waitlisted and I got the notification today via email! I didn't check the portal before now - no idea if I'm looking at the right place or not but I can't find anything on the supplemental application portal talking about my admission/waitlist status. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Whatever. I'm okay with it because it's a competitive school and I'm already in elsewhere, but if waitlisters are hearing first then that definitely is interesting!
  18. Nothing yet! When I log on, it also says that my application is complete and has been submitted. Based on the results from last year, it sounds like most people heard back in mid-March... Does anyone know if they give offers of financial aid along with their acceptances? I heard that NCCU makes you accept within a very short timeframe (which seems a bit suspicious to me... the other school I've been accepted to is leaving it until April 15).
  19. Mine also had a vague reference of hearing more about it later! I'm wondering how soon will be too early to ask... it's my top choice, but I might go elsewhere depending on if I get into a cheaper uni or if any others (that are about the same price) give me funding...
  20. I've gotten accepted by the University of New Hampshire - it seems like they're sending out their first round of acceptances now!
  21. As far as I know yes, you do need non-ComSci classes to fulfill those requirements. I took a introductory/investigating physics class at my university that was quite easy, and I'm currently taking an online biology class through my local community college. As long as you take the basic, non-major versions they should be fairly easy!
  22. I'm pretty nervous as well! I've done one interview which went okay, but I think I could have done better... while I certainly have preferences for which school I'd like to go to, at this point I really just want to know that I got in somewhere. I really hope I didn't go through the whole application process for nothing!
  23. That's great! Are you from NC? And do you know a lot about the program? I also like their focus on multicultural populations and issues, as that's a main interest of study for me. (And thank you! I'm definitely interested in North Carolina and both of those schools sound really great.)
  24. Hey! I've also applied to NCCU, but I heard they give a pretty strict deadline about when you need to enroll if they accept you, which makes me a bit nervous as I'm not totally sure I'd want to go there if I get in other places. Regardless, it's nice to meet others who've applied as well! Where else did you apply to?
