Nobody cares about your opinions. You're both highly toxic.
Please just PM each other, and leave the forum.
Oh also, I reported you guys to the mods too.
I doubt these two will stop so I think it would be good if some other people did as well, but I get it if you want to stay out of it.

Interestingly, I just got an email asking me to interview for UVA. No idea what it's about, just that they were 'interested in my application' and wanted a chance to speak.

Geez, this thread went from high anxiety generating to deeply toxic. Feels good that I avoided the forums this time around. My condolences to all the real humans that had to sit through the toxic troll fest.
Good luck with the arduous path of an academic life for those who will be starting the PhD this year, and my best wishes to those who will try again with applications next year around. I applied to 12 programs last year, and got rejected from all. This time around I applied to 10, and got accepted to 2 programs ranked in the 10s and 2 programs ranked in the 30s. I am really excited about this, especially given that I got into one of my dream schools! Amazing things can happen...

Would you mind sharing what changed in your application or tactic? I know a lot of people on here would be interested!

You don't need to apologize. I understand where everyone is coming from because each sentiment has spoken to me. Let us all remember this is a trying and frustrating time, and let us not assume we know what challenges others are facing regardless of where they got accepted or rejected. @jriveracal you shouldn't have to explain yourself, but now that you did I hope we can all see that people have grave obstacles in their own lives. Let us not take our frustrations out on others. This is soc 101. We have one group of people all struggling, but status differences are turning us against each other. Again, I feel the frustrations of the other camp who has not been granted such acceptances, but now is not the time to be spiteful, especially to someone who only had good intentions.

So wait, this guy gets to be a total dick to someone for no reason, like nothing happened? Like, @jriveracal apologizes for rightfully being stressed, and this guy doesn't have to? he gets to reply to her post like "oh, this is what i meant all along?" what bullcrap.

I think this should be the sociological equivalent of "May the force be with you." And I love it.

Just wanted to send a few words of encouragement to those people facing rejections--I was there last year, and it sucked. I applied to 7 programs (not Sociology, but something similar) and got rejected by 7. I felt embarrassed. I felt lost. I felt let down by my recommendation letter writers who had given me way too much confidence. I was angry with the schools who had rejected me.
Don't let it squash your passions. You might need to readjust slightly (like I did), you might need to apply to a wider variety or programs (like I did), or you might just need to do it again to get a better roll of the dice (like I did).
You're not defined by these applications. And whether or not you have the degree, you're all sociologists.

Thank you. Just really trying to shake all of this negativity off and get back up. This monologue by Schwarzenegger is the one thing that's keeping me going - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MY1AXIGeMGg

Venting here helped. I hate the results page for the anxiety it causes, but I'm glad that this forum has been as supportive and reflective as it has been, especially when people have disagreed with each other.

I don't expect the rough days to end anytime soon, but I have some hope left for now.

Idk about you guys, but once all the results are in it's going to be weird not spending every second of my human existence checking my email, gradcafe, reddit, and grad portals. I'll have to get a life... I kind of forget what life was like before this.

lol right? I have two monitors in my office and one of them is devoted to grad school stuff. And I don't use the other. Are you seeing the picture I just drew?

@artvandaley  I feel you. My hope for making it this cycle is crumbling. (1 official rejection, 2 likely, 1 program is MIA/radio silence) My scores were decent (your's definitely better). Also no pubs, but working on that now. I've already begun the process of mentally accepting I won't get in. I think my SOP's were the problem. I kept them professional and well-worded, but did not focus on the "fit" aspect like I should have.
For you, all I can say is that you applied to extremely competitive programs so you may have been a fine candidate, just no luck this cycle. I wouldn't give up hope though. Obviously do what you want to in life, but if grad school is a dream or part of a dream then stay strong and apply next cycle. I know I will. I will just go back to the drawing board. I wish you the absolute best.

From his post it looks like it was yesterday. I did not get one. I hate to be so glum but my application for them was shit so I expect a rejection. Based on past grad cafe results from the past they may have another round of interview emails as decisions are made. Good luck.

That's rough. I feel for you. I think it's hard enough to face rejection alone, but to add having a friend (so similar to you) get accepted can be rough. Just keep in mind that getting accepted to grad school is a crapshoot. Yes, it does matter what you profile/application looks like, but having a good profile will only get you into the top 30, 50? or whatever. And since only 5-15 candidates are accepted into any program its very possible to be an absolutely qualified candidate and still not be accepted.
I know it still doesn't seem right given how similar you and your friend are in terms of your app, but hey, based on this article even small word differences in your SOP could be enough to change outcomes. Just remember, this is not about your self-worth. Ppl get denied to grad school for tons of very small reasons that having nothing to do with your quality as a candidate.
My point is, yes it sucks. Yes, its natural to only feel pity for yourself and not be happy for her. First and foremost, don't feel bad for how you feel.
