  1. Hi, will be starting a Sociology PhD at NU in the fall! I already have housing (moving in with college friend who is already at NU in chem) but would love to talk to more incoming students!
  2. I have had several universities that increased my offer once they became aware I got offers from other places. Often, programs know what the base stipends for other universities are. Some universities, especially in the top 10, are not as willing to change offers once they are decided. They value having the same/similar offers across the cohort and also know that their offer is more valuable than others you may have received. However, even in light of this, I believe it's always worth trying, especially as a low income student like myself. Leverage your identity. They may (likely) say no, but they will still understand. Word of advice-- don't pursue changing your offer unless that change would GUARANTEE you attend that university.
  3. Hey! I'm not sure what you're intentions are, but if you're down I would love to get my hands on this data...
  4. Exactly. Struggle is struggle, and you'd think the people on this thread would be very aware of that. Compassion and understanding to all of you
  5. You're all sociologists/social scientists-- get out of your own head. She is a non-traditional student who is about to move her and her kids across the country. She's allowed the stress. Congrats to all of those who have gotten acceptances these last few days, and to those who haven't, continued luck and strength ❤️
  6. Hi yes, also got a CUNY acceptance informally a while ago, a formal decision was posted today. I have both a tuition waiver and a 26k stipend for 5 years.
  7. Hey. Yeah, I straight forwardly told them I was a low income student and wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise. The professor said let me look into that, emailed me the next morning that it was possible to reimburse me for the round trip flight to NY
  8. Like, they already confirmed that there is funding for the visit day for me to come and everything
  9. I also had this interview, and he assured me that I was accepted "basically" just need to confirm with the administrative body that I am qualified (GPA cutoff met, for example) I'm not sure what it means otherwise
  10. also, for those wondering, i'm getting absolutely hammered :))))
  11. I'm crying. I'm a first gen, dirt poor student who worked 30 hours a week throughout undergrad. homelessness, family deaths, the struggle was real. this means the world to me.
