  1. I didn't get in my first year of applying. So during my gap year I retook the GRE, did some shadowing, and just lived life. You will get in don't stress. It sucks to not get in the first time but it only makes the time you get in sooo much better. Honestly I looked at my gap year I had to take as a blessing being able to breathe and travel and just go at my own pace. You will do great!

This is my 4th time applying to grad school. I have been wait listed or denied everywhere I have applied for the last 4 years. For 3 of the 4 years I have worked and tried to do something in the field of speech pathology or close to it. I was a teachers aide for one year and the last 2 years I have worked in Florida at a middle school under a provisional license as a SLP maintaining a caseload of 70 students, writing IEP's, completing evaluations, working with AAC, etc. I had all the roles and responsibilities of a Masters Level SLP, but I was under the provisional license. I've had strong letters of recommendation written for me, I'd like to think my statement of purpose was strong as I had it edited by tons and tons of SLP's in the school district I am working in currently. In undergrad I was involved in CSD groups, had a job through the university mentoring incoming CSD freshman. My cumulative GPA was a 3.2, my GRE was verbal- 145, qualitative- 145, writing- 4. I am so frustrated being denied over and over again. When do you throw in the towel and say this just isn't meant for me? Although, it is also your biggest passion.

You have amazing scores and resume. Have you tried the University of Mississippi, Mississippi University for Women, University of Alabama,  or University of Memphis? I think you will have good shot at those schools. I have friends who applied there last year and this year and had similar stats and less experience than you.

I got accepted off the wait list for my #1 school (my undergrad school) and now I'm feeling incredibly inadequate. First of all, I get how this looks -- I got in, I should be happy and there are a lot of people still waiting to get in. So, I'm sorry for being insensitive. However, I can't shake this feeling. I put everything into my undergrad. So much time and energy. I got the grades, participated, did the extracurriculars, got to know my professors, and so on. So there is this feeling of, they know me and didn't want me. Now going into this program I'll know that of my cohort, I was the runt of the litter. Has anyone else experienced this?

Umm you shoudnt feel inadequate. There were probably more qualified people than you which usually happens. Then you probably wanted to add newer people to the school and get out of state tuition. You probably would qualify for in state since you have already been there. Most schools look at who will make them some extra money. Don't feel like anything less in your cohort. You got accepted into a graduate school. Remember your value. 100's of people literally get accepted off the waitlist. I was accepted off the waitlist. I would be different if you were rejected first then they came back saying "Oh hey wanna join". Don't let a little "waitlist" decrease your worth.

I have spent many hours looking at GradCafe seeing is there was hope for a low gpa to get into grad school for Speech Therapy. I am beyond happy to announce that I got accepted right out of undergrad into Adelphi this up coming fall semester. My gpa is a 2.9 and pretty average GRE scores. If you are worried and stressing out, I promise it will come to you! Look up schools with higher acceptance rates and play a numbers game!

Yes there is hope. Last year I applied to 15 schools during my 5th year and did not get in anywhere I was waitlisted at like 5 schools. I was applying with like a 2.85 during that time. So after I graduated I had had two C's from major classes and retook those to classes and got an overall of 2.93. Then this year I got accepted into my dream school. Just got to keep trying. My overall was horrible but my major GPA was a 3.64 and the Last 60 was a 3.50 GPA. Most schools look at the last 60 GPA and major GPA honestly.

  5. Hey! So I have a low overall GPA of a 2.83 but my CSD GPA was a 3.67 and last 60 of  3.65. I applied last year to about 15 programs and got declined from all of them and had to take a year off. So over the summer after graduation I retook the 2 CSD classes that gave me C's. Then with my free time I literally was on ASHA looking all summer at each school looking at their requirements for GPA and everything. I also had a ton of clinical experience. Then I retook the GRE test to get a higher writing score of a 4.0. This year I only applied to 9 schools and applied to my dream school and got accepted. Its all about playing your cards right and showing your self of. I bragged about being tri-lingual and my research experience and my experience DONT HOLD BACK! Good luck!

I have declined acceptances at Temple University, CUNY Lehman College, the College of Saint Rose, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I'm still deciding between three programs, so I'll be declining others in the future. Hope this helps someone!

I am waitlisted at College of Saint Rose!!! I hope I get off the waitlist soon this is my dream school. I hope to hear something soon from them! I hope everyone who isn't going declines soon. I have my fingers crossed super tight!!

  7. Honestly I would say go with UIUC's program the funding is beautiful. You can work out a long distance relationship especially if you really love each other. I would not give up anything like that. Put your education first and be debt free from graduate school. Then you said you loved the faculty and felt like you would really fit in. Sis, chose UIUC and live you best life. However pick where your heart leads you and please update me on where you chose.

Not OP, but do you know if Ole Miss has more of a pediatric focus?

Hey! They do have a more pediatric focused program. I actually worked as a undergraduate clinician in the H.I.L.L program that they have and its with autistic children and it was the best 6 months of my life. All the graduate students have to spend a semester in the H.I.L.L program I think. Any other questions just PM me. :)

Is there a reason you're not applying to university of Mississippi's graduate program even though you were in their undergrad program? I've been considering it but I don't really know much about the program itself and can't seem to find much info other than what's on the website. Anything helps!

    And good luck with applications!

    Thanks!

Well its a few reasons I am not applying. I loved the program in undergrad but I didn't meet the minimum requirements which was a 3.0 gpa. I wouldn't got accepted but they told me because of that it was no way around that rule. Then another reason is that the program is not diverse, because all the graduate students in recent years has been umm white. Asides from that I say go for it because the city is great and I love the faculty and everything. PM me if you have anymore questions about the school. I can get you in contact with some of the professors.
