I is stressed *Non-Judgmental Space for PhD Applicants*
Keyz replied to letsgetclinicalclinical's topic in Psychology Forum
I’d say maybe like a month after? So like maybe in the middle of March if you don’t hear back. -
Yeah I’m sure majority of people are just trying to make a super hard decision for their future. I hope yours works out how you want it!!!

Haha unfortunately yes, I’m on three waitlists currently but I’m just trying to be patient.

Yeah see that’s a huge issue, you shouldn’t be holding onto an offer simply because you can. It’s not about bundling all your offers or trying to get as many as you can because in the end that’s not fair, I totally agree. Especially since most people know what their tops schools are and what they aren’t.

See this is totally understandable and I see absolutely no problems with it. Especially in the case of funding, you don’t want to go somewhere that is going to put you into insane amounts of debt. I guess it’s totally understandable as well for those waitlisted since it is a stressful time and you don’t know whether that place someone got accepted at is a top choice or just a backup school, but holding admission for the right decisions is totally okay.

It hasn't happened to me personally but I have read accounts of where people were supposed to get in, but without funding an offer wasn't able to be extended. Hopefully that doesn't happen to you though!- 158 replies

I is stressed *Non-Judgmental Space for PhD Applicants*
Keyz replied to letsgetclinicalclinical's topic in Psychology Forum
Yeah totally understandable, it just seems like it's the name of the game. The only bad thing is that my PIs didn't give any sense of what part of the waitlist that we are on (I'm assuming so since other posts have only stated being "waitlisted" as well without top/middle/bottom). -
I always just wonder whether that comes down to the program or the individual POI cause I feel like it would suck to have multiple students turn down your acceptance offer.

I'm guessing your acceptance was for dev?

I had this happen too FOUR times. Once in person where the professors said they loved me and I’d be a great fit, THEN the other three through email about how it was such a pleasure and how impressive I was and had a great fit.... *waitlisted at every one* Therefore I am sending you good vibes and hoping that you will receive good news unlike me! -
What are people's experiences being waitlisted?
Keyz replied to Waitlistedbuthopeful's topic in Psychology Forum
I feel you, the thing about waitlists is that it just feels like you are in some sort of purgatory and I think that it makes the entire process more maddening because you have to endure up to 2 more months of waiting for some form of closure. But I'm really glad that you are waitlisted at your top two because it shows that you ARE good enough for this and have an extremely good chance of getting in, so I wish the best of luck to you and hope that you will get accepted off of the waitlist! -

It could simply mean that the POI is still in the process of figuring out funding, how many applicants they can offer acceptances to, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be accepted, there are many factors that go into the process.- 158 replies

Haha no problem. All of the students I've met have been very open about emailing them any questions and one even added me on Facebook at dinner so I had a direct way to contact them if I ever needed anything so hopefully you get some good answers!!!- 158 replies

As far as your question goes, I don't think it would be a good idea to bombard them with questions (I'm sure you're joking anyway lol) but its definitely okay to ask students questions especially if you've been accepted.- 158 replies

I feel this. After I was waitlisted after one of my interviews I just decided to go for it and ask my PI if historically people have been taken off of the waitlist because I still really wanted to work with them. I want to ask what position I'm at in the "queue" (lol) but at the same time don't want to push things, but it also just sucks not knowing because other people have also mentioned receiving an email that simply states being "wait listed" without any mention of "top" or "middle." It's such a stressful time and add onto that that decisions can be made up until April 15th.... Oof.- 158 replies

What are people's experiences being waitlisted?
Keyz replied to Waitlistedbuthopeful's topic in Psychology Forum
It's hard because each program is so different so it won't apply to every program. I know some programs offer acceptance to their top 5-6 applicants after interviews and then waitlist some of the other interviewees, sometimes even all of the other interviewees in case. Others will over accept interviewees and count on some acceptances being declined. Thats the thing: every program and institution is so different that there's no clear-cut answer. -

What are people's experiences being waitlisted?
Keyz replied to Waitlistedbuthopeful's topic in Psychology Forum
Yes, some programs include a section at the bottom along the lines of "Other information relevant to student admissions" which may or may not include number of applicants, number of acceptances given, number of acceptances actually accepted, number of applicants funded, etc. -

This is a good point. If a program releases this data on their admissions outcomes, you can look into that (unfortunately a lot of programs don’t.) For example, one program I was looking at had to give out 18 acceptances in order to get a cohort of 6 last year, meaning they had gone to the waitlist many times.
