There were a few of us waiting for that Brown rejection: I emailed last week to check my status, didn't hear anything, so I called today. The grad coordinator said they had released their decisions to the graduate school but were waiting on the graduate school to make a few more decisions. The graduate school is aiming to have them all out by March 15.

I had a similar experience as @beardedlady. I took the subject test five years ago and it was the worst testing experience of my life. My scores had expired before I ended up applying for PhD programs. Three of my programs “highly recommended” it but did not require it. I was rejected from one, accepted at one, and invited to a finalist interview at the last—the last ultimately ended in a rejection but I think it was because when I got to the interview it was clear to us both that we weren’t right for each other, I don’t think I would have made it to the interview if it was based on my lack of subject test scores.

I just sent off an email to decline a funded PhD offer with an additional fellowship at U of Tennessee - Knoxville. Hoping it opens a door for someone! -

UT Austin Acceptances
arbie replied to spatial_person's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Had to visit UT early due to a conflict during the official weekend. Sitting in the airport waiting for my flight home, but I wanted to tell y’all that: While i was visiting, there was a grad student conference called Fugitive Futures: Graduate Students of Color Un-settling the University and SAIDIYA HARTMAN was the keynote. I only got to peep in for a panel or so, but for all my Poco and “Ethnic” Lit people, just wanted to tell you that that happened (just bc i had no idea prior and thought it was pretty cool)! -
@esbe19 i really have no idea. I do Af-Am/diaspora

Same case here.

@tcatherine SAME—I had counted it an implied rejection, but let me know if you hear anything!

Congrats to the slew of Brownies!! This is my last school to send out acceptances, so taking the implied rejection and ready to make some decisions!

I personally think visiting if you’re able to is so, SO key. I visited all the MA programs i was accepted to a few years ago and so far, this year, have visited 5 PhD programs (I’m including the interview/recruitment hybrids). There were places where I got an instant feeling I wouldn’t fit there, despite being a good fit on paper, and the longer I spent there the stronger the feeling became OR something happened to turn that feeling around. There were other programs where I didn’t think the fit as strong as others, but when I went there, found there had been resources and profs I had overlooked and wound up loving it. There were other places where I clicked so well with professors and easily spoke to them for an hour + and other places where conversations were forced and awkward and ended quickly. There is also the city fit to consider as well! It’s a long commitment and I think the city you live in is a big factor to consider too! I have been accepted to several programs and waitlisted at a few and will by all means decline places I’ve ruled out within the next week or so, but for the top two or three, while i am planning to make a decision before April 15 to give others time, I am not going to make a decision without all the facts and conversations I need. I think accepting a little before April 15 is both helpful to others but also gives you time to make a thorough decision. But I don’t think you must push it far earlier than a *little* before the 15, especially with visiting days so late. I definitely and strongly encourage visiting both, if you can, before making a call!

Congrats to the Brown acceptance on the board!!

I’m not actually sure. The letter seemed to come from the university and not the department, so idk how that factors in.

Waitlisted at Emory—this has been a dream school of mine since 2013, so not in the best place about it. DGS said I was on a small waitlist but not a ton of hope of movement since Emory has increased their stipend in a significant way this year. -
Thinking of all the Michigan people today. Though, on a deeper level, I really have to respect a school who sends out all acceptances, rejections, and waitlists on the same day.
-
Congrats to all you Michigan acceptances out there!!

Y’all. Some of these implied rejections out here make me feel like I’m experiencing the 7 stages of grief.

Sorry—I got called away at work in the middle of posting, but it’s mine. I haven’t gotten a change in my portal, but so far in this process, my portals have only changed once I’ve been notified—usually days to a week later. They said they’d be in touch if things changed and emailed me a summary of the funding packing in case there’s movement, but no indication of standing on the list.

Genuine congrats to all the Northwestern admittances!! *continue reading at your own risk but know the following is not meant as shade to you* All my Northwestern rejectees, remember when it was -48 in Chicago though? Coping mechanism? Perhaps, or perhaps it was divine intervention on my behalf.
