Withdrawing and reapplying to the same school in future?
Reza2019 replied to heythere_95's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I've deferred admission and my experience most universities are ok with doing it once or even twice. If they thought you were good enough to admit once, they will likely admit you again. So go ahead and deffer again but try to make it the last time. -
withdrawing an acceptance for another offer
Reza2019 replied to jenen's topic in Decisions, Decisions
In my experience most schools understand if you change your mind. Just send a letter saying you will not be able to attend due to various reasons. -
Thanks for this information. I definitely have some calculating to do before I embark on this degree.

iSchool - University of Michigan vs. University of Toronto
Reza2019 replied to godoftetris's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Congrats. I got into the program at UoT as well. I feel that in UX your portfolio matters far more than your degree. Given that UoT offers good value for money and plenty of opportunity to build a portfolio, I'd choose UoT. As far as US salaries are concerned, don't forget to factor the high cost of living in cities like San Francisco. I vote for UoT.- 6 replies

@najo or anyone else familiar with taking a loan from Scotiabank. What are the requirements for getting a student loan from Scotiabank? Do we need a fulltime job or a cosigner? I'm a Canadian Permanent Resident and I have an offer from the program.

I believe the decisions have already been made so it probably won't make a difference. Has anyone looked into the Scotia Professional Plan? What are the requirements besides being a full-time student and Canadian national? Do we need to be working? How much can we expect to earn in the summer? Should I consider that when budgeting?

I got an offer from another professional program in Canada with $2500 of funding. Do you think I should tell the team at UoT? Perhaps it will improve my chances of getting some funding. Do I have to disclose the university name and details of the offer to UoT?

I like your analytical approach! The 2018 alumni report had a 80% response rate and an avg salary of CAD 65K with 80% of respondents saying they are working in Toronto. As a Canadian PR, I also expect to end up in GTA even though I'd love a great offer from Silicon Valley.. But the numbers indicate that that is rare. Now I'm inclined to believe the remaining 20% who did not respond are probably even worse off. If they had six figure jobs at Google HQ, I'm guessing they would have mention them. Are these impressive stats for a UXD program that regularly gets cited as one of the top programs outside the US?

Has anyone gotten any update regarding scholarships for this program? I've gotten into a few other great programs with funding so I have to do a cost/benefit analysis. I also noticed that the average salary for iSchool graduates is around $63,000. Does that seem low for a degree that includes specializations like Data Science and UXD.. two of the hottest tech areas? Thoughts?

Thanks, this was exactly the kind of 'insider' information I was hoping to get. Any thoughts on Thunderbird? I am looking for an annual lease but my classes start in September and they seem to require a 1 May 2019 to 30 May 2020 lease. Is there any way around that besides paying three months extra rent? Also, I have been given a verbal offer. Can I apply for housing now or do I need to accept a written offer before I can do that?

@Giank this information is very helpful Just a general question for everyone. I am a graduate student starting my PhD program in Business at UBC. I am a single male who is 30 years old. I was looking up the different housing options: John's College, Thunderbird, Ocean Drive and Exchange. They all seem very similar according to the website (John's has a mandatory meal plan) but I was wondering if a newer building like Exchange is perhaps the best option? Anyone have any thoughts about each of these? My budget for rent would be about 1200-1300. Also, can anyone shed some light on the difference between a 1 year lease and an 8 month lease. Why would anyone opt for an 8 month lease?

I just got into my second choice PhD in Business. However, the supervisor is not the POI I had in mind. In fact, his research, though interesting, is not very relevant. 1. Does this mean I will have to focus on the research topic of this new supervisor throughout my PhD or will I have the flexibility to pivot to my own area of interest? Any advice? 2. I am still waiting to hear back from my first choice. Should I quickly email them about this offer? At the first choice school, should I email the POI or the admissions team? What do I say? A prompt response would be appreciated
