I e-mailed UNC yesterday for a status update because I haven't heard anything since they acceptances/waitlists went up on the board a couple weeks ago. Will report back :)

Apparently UNC isn’t done making decisions, and all final decisions will go out at least two weeks before April 15th. So if you haven’t heard back yet, don’t lose hope!

  2. @Lowe yes I definitely want to stay in Texas also, so I'm thrilled about this acceptance. I love the department and students here already, so I'm very happy about potentially staying here for the PhD.

You might use your better funding offers for leverage. No guarantees, but it can't hurt. The worst they can say is no. But yes, unfortunately the funding/stipend is lower here.

And yes I will be here! I'll be at the lunch & the dinner and around the department during the day. I'm excited to meet everyone! :)

I left my app open to Irish lit by mentioning some work I did on Irish identity as Other but it's not my focus.  Honestly I can't recommend enough looking at the work published by recent graduates of the program.  Pretty sure I totally lucked out applying to SMU this year because their one student who seemed to be doing what I do graduated last spring.  I read her work and we have a ton of overlapping interests.  But who knows, like you said, there may have been a ton of other applicants with similar interests.  Here's hoping something works out for you in the end this cycle!

I'm getting kind of irritated about not getting my rejections from UofO and UConn.  The latter already sent out waitlist notifications so I know it's a reject...but I need them to pop the last, aged, sad balloon of hope I'm dragging around by a string.  I really wish all the programs would send out all notifications on the same day, well before April.

Ooooh, like since they impose the April 15 decision deadline, also impose a like March 1 notification deadline or something along those lines. They could also have a national application deadline. That would be really useful across the board. Everyone would be on the same schedule.

I called them early last week and they said they were still making decisions and sending out notifications.  The woman I spoke with on the phone said that acceptances/waitlists would be notified via phone call or e-mail.  She gave no timeline as to when they'd have everything out by, but if you haven't heard yet, don't give up hope as they haven't notified everyone yet (as of last week, at least).

    Thank you for this!! :)

Congratulations on your admission to your second choice, and I'll keep fingers crossed for you about UT! I understand the temptation, but I would advise against asking to attend the visit day if you weren't explicitly invited. Even though you wouldn't be asking for reimbursement for travel, there are costs associated with attendance in terms of resources, including food and beverages, logistical arrangements, and faculty/administrator time. Asking to be accommodated in a hosting schedule that is quite hectic, at least at my institution, might earn you some raised eyebrows at the least, and even some antipathy. If (and I hope when!) you are admitted, it would be perfectly appropriate to ask whether you could schedule a visit to meet with faculty in your field, tour the campus, and talk to graduate students about the departmental culture and atmosphere. Good luck!

Ah, thanks so much for this advice! I hadn't considered the additional costs that me visiting might incur. I'll wait with fingers and toes crossed! Thanks again :)

  6. @emprof

I'd love to hear your input on attending visit days for schools you've been waitlisted for, or asking to attend.

I'm waitlisted at UT currently, and I only live about an hour and a half away, so travel funding isn't necessary/it's so close and easy for me to travel to. I wasn't invited to the prospective students' visit, but I'd love to go. If I do make it in off the waistlist, and I haven't visited, I would still accept because they're my top choice, but I'd still like to visit the department and chat with people, you know? I've been accepted to my second choice school, and I would be happy staying here. I don't want to get to UT having not met anyone in the department and find out it's not as good of a fit as I'd thought (though I doubt this will happen!).

Any advice on basically asking to invite myself to visit day? haha.

yes! same boat! weird mix of super happy with my acceptance and a lot of complicated feelings around everything else, especially the sense of choice. glad to at least not be alone in the experience!

Yes I am happy we are here to reality check each other! what a wild ride this is. I'm really happy with the program I've been accepted to, but I would love to have had a choice/some funding leverage...

Same boat here as well! Happy, but mixed feelings about having only one acceptance. Love the program I've been accepted to but would love to have a choice/funding leverage. I'm still waiting to hear back from 2 places (and whether I'll make it off UT's waitlist), but I'm not holding my breath for either tbh.

that you guys for your advise!! I am finding myself really lost seeing that I might not go to grad school straight from undergrad, but still ill just work on my application and resume.

ps. This is really funny as I didn't realize this was the English Lit PhD forum.

I, too, applied to direct admit programs straight out of undergrad and was rerouted to the MA program, and I think it was the best thing that's happened to me in my academic career. I was NOT ready for PhD level work straight out of my BA, even though I thought I was and even though I wanted to get through school quickly. Doing the MA (or really being forced to as I was technically a PhD shutout) really allowed me to both expand and focus my interests, improve myself as a scholar, and really learn how to grad school. My MA came with a TA-ship, no funding otherwise. I have accrued some debt, but not much. I did not have any debt from undergrad, and plan to attend a fully funded PhD program now, so my only debt comes (minimally) from my MA. For me, having the MA experience (though unintentional and not what I wanted at the time) was seriously the best choice for me. Would I have rather attended a fully funded MA program? Hell yeah. If I could have 0 debt, that would be amazing. But don't be afraid to attend an MA program after being a PhD shutout this cycle. Apply to MA programs that have later deadlines/are fully or partially funded is my advice. Taking the time to do my MA first changed my scholarly (and really my entire) life.

Edit: Haha, didn't realize you weren't English. I still stand by my advice, though I'm not sure of exactly how your field's grad school process works.

Not the one on the board but I’m on the waitlist as well. Had a personalized note from the DGS, followed by a standard issue letter about the waitlist. It sounds as though the waitlist is relatively small and the email continued on to invite us to their open house and tell us more about the program and Chapel Hill. Hope that helps!

oof i wonder if they’ve sent everything out already? i haven’t heard anything

My mentor and I are pretty close — we text and she’s really down to earth and I view her as both a good friend and mentor. Is it considered rude to share funding info, perhaps similar to sharing salaries?

I’d really like to ask her a question about my funding package from NYU (which honestly looks really good and I am thrilled/shocked) but want to check here about whether or not that’s considered bad manners.

WHY ISNT THERE AN ACADEMIA ETTIQUETTE HANDBOOK? We should take all the ridiculous “is this okay to do” questions we ask each other here and compile one, lol.

I think if you feel comfortable sharing it, then it’s totally fine. You seem close with her, and I don’t think it would be weird. Especially if you are asking genuinely about something concerning the package. I think she’ll be just as thrilled as you are that you got a great funding package and happy to answer questions. Congrats also!
