psycholokri got a reaction from ZF1 in Fall 2021 Industrial Organizational Psychology PhD/MS
I've been asked about (1) my research interests (broadly and more specifically) (2) why I want a Ph.D./My future career goals (3) how I face adversity or stress (4) what about the professors research interests me (5) A research project that I've been part of that excited me (6) what part of graduate school I am most excited and most nervous for (7) what experience do I have at each part of the research process (8) my past research experience overall (9) and if I have teaching experience.

This is from a few interviews, but I feel like I've seen a few repeats (especially around past research experience and future goals) from all of them.

Hello! I’m so excited to have stumbled upon the site! As an applicant, I must say, this is an exciting forum to participate in. I wish you all the best of luck and may the admissions committees bless you all with the decisions you wish to hear!

To give you all some background about me, this is the first graduate school admissions cycle that I have been a part of and I applied to four I/O programs: Baruch College CUNY, George Mason University, North Carolina State University, and Rice University. I’ve been involved in research for almost three years in a Personality lab where I’ve had the privilege of working on four research projects, including an honors thesis.

Hello! I saw someone mention that they have been invited to interview at Texas A&M for IO, would you mind sharing your PI initials?

Are preliminary interviews usually this common? I have really never been in this part of the process before, but I feel like I am seeing more preliminary interviews this year.

This is my first time applying for I/O programs, just submitting before deadline. Finishing up my undergrad with an I/O psych concentration.  Was a research assistant, did my own research, as well as an internship in HR this past summer.  Did an honors thesis, graduating Summa Cum Laude with 3.85 GPA in less than 3 and a half years. Presented research at my university and for the CEO at my internship, but haven't published research or presented at conferences.  Applying to about 20 schools because with less schools taking candidates, and less professors taking graduate candidates, I am very concerned about my chances. Any thoughts from experienced applicants? Oh, and my decent but not phenomenal V158 Q158 GRE.
Good luck to you all, especially those who have been through this grueling process before.

I think I saw you at the IUPUI open house last night! This is also my second application cycle! I plan on applying to Texas A&M, Rice, University of Houston, Portland State University, DePaul, George Mason University, and FIU among others.

I am surprised to see there has not been much of a thread for IO considering it is extremely relevant. I applied last semester and now attending an IO program, so if either of you would like help or advice please let me know.

Oh, nice! I thought that was a super cool thing they did, I haven't seen any other programs do that. It really gave me a better idea of each faculty member's research interests. I'm surprised this forum isn't more active, when I applied two years ago there were so many people applying. Either there's not as many applicants (great for us) or people just don't know about GradCafe. Either way, I'm excited to get the process started!

I emailed all of the professors about 3 weeks ago-- that's honestly how I received most of my rejections/waitlists/updates. I don't think it hurts at all. If you prefer, you could email the department, but I think if you have emailed the POI before then you are completely okay to email them for an update.

I followed up with a POI yesterday to inquire about my status on the waitlist. She immediately responded to let me know that they have offered to one candidate but that I am next in line if that student declines. Fingers crossed but at least I have one acceptance that I can hold on to for now!

I am seeing many lab manager positions popping up in http://psychgradsearch.wikidot.com/
I am sure there will be more availability as many current research assistants/lab managers go get into a grad school. Definitely keep an eye out on relevant job search sites.
Also, I've realized that one of the main factors that help with getting accepted is if POIs are familiar with your research ideas. If you have letter of recommendations from people who know your POI well (or have worked with them), then that's a big plus. But you SHOULD reach out to ppl whose work you really like and have new insights about..ask if you want any clarifications...maybe discuss new directions their research can take...reach out to many and don't wait till August. Blow them away with your depth of knowledge and research ideas. And you will get in.

I’ve only got a couple of schools left that I need to hear back from, and I’m afraid they’re both gonna end in no interview invites. Just like almost everything else has. I’ve been hiding the rejections from a lot of people in my life, afraid to face them and what they might think. It’s hard to even face myself with this sometimes, as optimistic as I try to be. Just wanted to send some good thoughts to everyone here who might be on the same boat.

My god waiting is hard. My nerves are absolutely fried right now. At this point outright rejections would be welcome, because then at least I'd know.
