  1. I think that the contemporary art world is doing rather well but just not the American scene. Right now China is making a "killing" on opening up new galleries and showing somewhat cutting-edge work. UK is doing all right. Much of it depends on what you want to do with your MFA. I would recommend it if you want to make the proper connections with those who are big leagues in the contemporary art world as sadly enough, those connections will help a ton. But if you are the next JR or Banksy forget about it... that is art school. You don't have to be in a MFA program if you are into street and underground art scene. But you will need luck and some publicity stunts to make yourself known if that's what you want.
  2. I definitely know that Yale allows deferral. One of our alumni from the U of U got this earlier this year but she isn't heading to Yale until next fall for sure.
  3. I just updated with public permissions now here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wY9QR3NZklLHnejguAAvw8_E_HYokru291Wkf53y_HY/edit?usp=sharing
  4. What bothers me is the lack of transparency on the school informing the public that they aren't taking a new batch of folks. Here is an example of a student list not updated for a class of 2022. https://arts.columbia.edu/visual-arts/students and http://mfafinearts.sva.edu/students Also some schools did put up their new rosters for 2022 but one can see that classes have diminished quite a bit. https://www.art.yale.edu/about/people/current-students and http://www.art.cmu.edu/mfa/students/ (CMU wasn't impacted too much). Yale sculpture probably had 4-5 deferred folks.
  5. Actually I have a suspicion that some MFA programs rejected everyone for the whole year to keep funding for their current students. They already did that for art history PHDs in Yale and U of Chicago this year.
  6. Emily Carr in Vancouver is the only one I am looking at.
  7. I am not applying quite yet as I am a 2nd year undergrad. However I did make an Excel spreadsheet of where I am applying to (with references which are very tentative here). Here is my spreadsheet for future applications- https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wY9QR3NZklLHnejguAAvw8_E_HYokru291Wkf53y_HY/edit?usp=sharing Hope that helps everyone here! (I will be entering a MFA program in the fall of 2023).
  8. Here are some good videos to look at: and
  9. Which program or media are you applying for?
  10. Pretty stunned that no one is applying to MFA programs this year :o Or are MFA programs taking no one for fall 2022?
  11. I would be interested if it were on Android. iOS is too limiting and you can't assume every art related person is using an iPhone.
  12. Honestly I don't think that Yale Ph.D. track in art history will be open for at least 2-4 years because of how much COVID-19 will have impacted. I find it ironic that more people are applying to art history in a time when the job market is shrinking and museums are facing challenges. Perhaps China will be the future of contemporary art so ideally it would be a good idea to move over to do curation and museum jobs.
  13. Well someone had to do it. (I am not applying this year but felt that it's about time when folks are starting to apply for next year's programs.) Here it goes!
  14. One of our alumni is heading there for her MFA this year. https://www.art.utah.edu/catching-up-with-alyssa-hood/
  15. I am finishing up my art residency at SVA and I have 2 years before I apply for MFA's. I would say that a chunk of my art is overtly political.
  16. Wow... thank goodness I am going into visual arts because I just would be in T-shirts and Crocs honestly if I were teaching. I don't like hierarchy whatsoever.
  17. Why do I feel that post-structuralist approaches have fallen out of favor? I am a huge fan of Deleuze and it's because of New Formalism coming back that I decided to switch to visual art instead of English literature Ph.D. track.
  18. Non-disclosure can lead to revocation of degree and credits if found out.
  19. Such a list would be moot because there are so many different periods of art history. Each university specializes in certain periods. I know contemporary art pretty decently but that's all I could help you with if you wish.
  20. Which program is it btw?
  21. To be honest, it will be quite a few years before any type of vaccine will exist which is safe for humans.
  22. Nothing really. One of the artists who lives around me is just going to be attending Yale program this fall just as usual. I guess just wear a mask and do the social distancing type of thing.
  23. Recently Columbia had some issues with faculty going on leave for 1-2 years and students there wanted a tuition refund. Recently the program is trying to make sure that most of the faculty stay on campus and there is less turnover. However, I think those are attending there would be the best folks to discuss this in better detail than I could.
  24. I am a returning student finishing up 3 more years of my BFA before going to a MFA program. At this point, I would be full steam ahead because the country is in flux. Plus it's a great and inspirational time to be making lots of art. So yes!...
  25. Columbia is in a huge transition period and honestly at this point, I would not be very expectant of funding for students easily. My friend who just finished there said it's a good program but I would apply for external scholarships mostly for it.
