Great, thank you for the info! And congrats for getting into UW Madison! One of my best friends is doing a PhD there

Additional update: I received word that I am a finalist for FLAS at UW Madison! Hope this might be able to help gauge others' decision timelines. However, with this covid-19 crisis, I bet things are slowing down with award decisions.

Congrats on Georgetown! From my knowledge, FLAS is only a one academic year award. For additional years, you would have to reapply. I'm not sure that this is a universal standard, but that is what I have heard from my schools and have read from other posts. Also it might vary between schools as to how they dispense their awards and if previous awardees can get preference or do not. I would contact GT's FLAS Coordinator or someone in your department and ask about some specifics.

I just got an email from Cornell saying that they have received my application and faculty will begin to review them today. Hopefully the process goes quickly!!!

Oh I’m going no matter what. FLAS would just be veryyyyyy nice to ease the financial burden.

Congratulations on Stanford, that's incredible!!!! I'm super excited for you on this. I know FLAS usually takes a while and from what I have heard and read, it doesn't seem to normally come with the acceptance offer. I would give it a little longer, although I know how TOUGH it is to keep waiting, because you might be surprised!

elizbiz got a reaction from Phoenix88 in Program Decision? - Accepting Before Visit/Protocol/Etiquette
I agree with the above post, you can absolutely decline! Not everyone is able to do a visit so I would say it's not too uncommon or strange to accept before a campus visit. If Program A is really aligned with your interests and gives you funding, I don't think there would be anything wrong with accepting. Especially if you have no third option. Also, you could email Program B that you have already narrowed down your selected and you appreciate the opportunity for a visit, you'll no longer need it to be planned. Most places are fine with that! I work in higher ed admin and sometimes those emails, especially when nothing has been planned yet, are a relief for whoever is coordinating everything lol
congrats on the acceptances btw!

Best of luck to you! I am also only going for an MA right now and going in second year. I am worried that the notification will come close or past the decision deadline..so I hope it comes in March. A girl can definitely dream! If you want, keep me posted on when your notification comes in. I know it's a school to school basis, but might provide a general ballpark to settle my impatience haha

I'm hoping the best for you!! That stipend is so crucial. I'm going into my grad program in fall 2020 and I KNOW i'm going to end up working a lot for money reasons.

Thanks, I appreciate it! I am in a similar boat as well, I do not want to take out loans (especially for a 2 year degree) and I don't have the financials at all to afford it without funding. Fingers crossed for the both of us!!!

Hello all,
I'm a prospective Masters student in Theology and Middle Eastern Studies, focusing on Islam and Arabic.
First of all, how many people are applying for the FLAS? What kind of information did you put in your statements? I felt that it was really difficult to fit everything I needed to say into 1 page.
Second, a question:
Does anyone know if FLAS committees have access to applications for individual schools? I asked two schools, Harvard said that their FLAS was a separate committee and therefore did not see apps, but Columbia hasn't responded yet. Does anyone know, is the process the same across the board in general or does each school have their own FLAS process?
Good luck everyone!

Grad Decision 2016,
Where will you head if you don't take the Wisconsin-Madison FLAS offer?
Did you receive a second offer of FLAS or just a tuition reduction good enough to turn down an offer from Wisconsin-Madison?
Also, is Wisconsin-Madison offering to cover all of your tuition there through FLAS or just a portion?
Thanks and congratulations on the FLAS offer from Wisconsin.

I heard back from Wisconsin-Madison several weeks ago that I was being offered an academic year fellowship to study Kazakh. I'm about 98% sure I'm heading to a different university though, just waiting for one more answer. So, that will free up a FLAS for someone at Madison.

I was notified by UW-Madison that I've been awarded a FLAS Fellowship for Kazakh! Yay! The announcements are being made! Check your e-mails if you haven't also already been hitting the refresh button repeatedly!

Hey! I totally feel you! I also applied for for Cornell's Asian Studies M.A. and Wisconsin-Madison's M.A. in Southeast Asian Studies, and Syracuse's M.A. in Religion. I just got acceptance emails from Cornell and University of Hawaii-Manoa this Friday, so now I'm currently applying for FLAS funding for Cornell!

Wouldn't it be nice? I'm starting the first year of my MA degree Fall 2020 and I'm worried about managing my student workload with my actual workload because rent doesn't pay itself!

I applied for FLAS funding for Korean at Stanford, but even getting into Stanford is a long shot lol. I don't think I'll be hearing back until around March. I'm a bit concerned because I only applied for MA, not PhD, and also I'm only at second year Korean and I think they prioritize more advanced levels. But a girl can dream!

I forget the exact numbers, and it does fluctuate a little each other, but Syracuse admits 2-4 M.A. students a year with full funding and no TA/GA obligations. From my unofficial interview there several years ago, all M.A. students are eligible to continue on into the Ph.D. through an internal application process (interviewer mentioned that in their nearly 30 years there they've only denied one internal application and that was because he kept taking courses in other departments and they no longer felt he was a suitable potential Ph.D. student in Religion). Most opt not to continue into the Ph.D. there but through no fault of the school - a lot of their M.A. graduates transition into another field, go onto higher ranked Ph.D. programs, or someone just doing it for personal reasons.
FLAS funding at Syracuse is pretty pervasive though I can't speak to Religion specifically. I knew a lot of students in History, Sociology, and Political Science that had it.
My wife did her Ph.D. in Disability Studies at Syracuse so we lived there for about five years - glad to talk about the city and school if needed!

Finally got a response! Whew!
Wait listed at my No. 1 choice, which isn't bad – but feels a little like, "Hey thanks for waiting! Now wait some more!"

I was accepted to Brown via email today (Religion and Critical Thought subfield). This is my second time applying, after a round of 6 “NO” replies. For personal reasons, I am not even sure if I’ll enter a PhD program next Fall (there’s a lot going on in the background here that I won’t get into), but just wanted to tell people who don’t get in the first round that hope is not lost!
