Improving Application for Next Year: Research and IO Psych
Gatech_ST replied to psycholokri's topic in Psychology Forum
I volunteered in my undergrad as research assistant and it helped me a lot. Not only improving my profile, but I did gain a lot of experience and knew that I liked to do research. Definitely try to talk to professors in your school -
Don't worry, many were in similar boat,. Your professor has been good to you and you are just interested in different topic, he/she shouldn't take offense. The first thing I would advice you is to really know what you want to do, this way you can clearly articulate that to your adviser. You will look much better then simply telling them that you are not interested in their work, as you might come off as lost.. He/she might even help you suggest a colleague or a collaboration of some sort. Research what other faculties/labs are doing in your department/school. Hopefully you will find interesting sub field and then you can email them and ask for interview. I would ask for possible research project available and try to do well in them. Good luck!

One of the best advice I got is not to compare yourself with others, everyone is on their own pace. Beside, part of the PhD journey is learning, I don't think you are expected to know everything from the start

It it certainly possible, but maybe consider switching your adviser ? Speak to your program coordinator or your adviser. Be clear on what you want to do and see if they can direct you to someone within the university. I would only consider switching university as a last resort. Beside, PhD is an independent work, you might be able to convince a faculty supporting your research if there is intersection with their line of work.

Preparation for University of Rochester CS PhD Interview
Gatech_ST replied to Catlyn5267's question in Questions and Answers
Are you being interviewed by the committee or specific professor you are interested in? I would prepare for the general usual questions if it was a committee (Why PhD, Why [School]? why [Interest]?..), also consider dropping names of professors that interests you with reasons. Do not only restrict your interest to a single professor, it is usually a bad sign. For a lab interview I will personally review the professor papers, at very least read his/her abstract, and try to connect that with possible future direction that line with your interest. -
It did happen to me, I just waited after I followed up and they reached out to me 2 weeks later. Consider waiting a week or two before a second follow up,.

Do I wait to accept the offer?
Gatech_ST replied to Mg1995's topic in The April 15th is this week! Freak-out forum.
There should be an official deadline to accept your offer, you can also negotiate extending it if you are still waiting for the other. Yeah you can attend the events, they are made to convince people to join! you will also have a chance to interact with other students and faculty -
You should definitely ask, Do you know if the program funds all PhD students (for example some departments/school does)? Also, did the acceptance letter mention funding ?

Will my online Master's look bad on PhD application?
Gatech_ST replied to banana.mathlover's question in Questions and Answers
It is definitely not bad, beside I don't believe there is a distinction between online masters and in-campus masters degree. Although being in campus gives you the ability to possibly create relationship with professor on a personal level. But, for PhD, research experience, fit and graduate courses all contribute towards getting you accepted. -
For long writing, consider Ulysses it is an amazing writing tool I used for some time, It has an attractive UI and you can divide your writing into different modules which gives you a distraction free experience instead of one giant scroll. I also use Zotero for citation and reference management (some prefer Mendeley) and thesaurus for synonyms.

Generally speaking, having any evidence of being able to conduct research is always a positive thing (lab experience, publication, thesis, etc) But what really helped me is reading POI papers, his/her colleagues and knowing the top papers and scholars in their sub-field will get you a long way. I was fortunate to get three interviews scheduled and I did a literature review for all three and being able to articulate and point to specific papers, the problems they are trying to solve and possibly consider future direction (even on surface level) got me accepted.

I would personally choose a more relaxed environment over rigorous one, and personally I would avoid new lab.

I was in similar situation, I just volunteered in one of my undergrad prof lab as a research assistant during the summer and then even got paid. Try to find a way in in anyway, if you show them commitment and passion usually they are open ( at least in my case). On top of research experience, you may end up getting a glowing recommendation on top of it.

Does prof normally respond to your email?
Gatech_ST replied to StressedOutUser's topic in Computer Science
It is very hard to get an sort of engagement from the professor for an unknown applicant, they receive hundreds every time (the only exception is newly appointed ones from my experience) I would say consider visiting the school of visit day, and if you got accepted visit the school and try to reach out to the professor or go to their office etc. -
One thing to consider is that ML/DL is a hot area right now and it is very competitive generally even on reach schools. Considering your research background, I would say you definitely would be able to get into some of those schools (UIUC could be a reach).

Consider looking at usnews and see their average GPA/TOEFL/GRE in your department for the schools there. For example, I would look at the top 20-50 schools, and see their average profile from the site and apply to the ones that may look feasible The department's website may also give you hints on what an accepted profile looks like. If you failed this round, always look at ways to improve your profile, e.g. improving GRE/TOEFL scores, joining a lab and working on research during the summer etc. Also, there are schools who don't require GRE! Good luck!

Your profile looks excellent to me! But I would like you to consider a good reason to get your Masters and especially PhD apart from being first in your family. For example, how does getting a degree help you in achieving your goals? In terms of what you want to study, think about what you are passionate about, what wakes you up in the morning? any specific theme/topic (even if it was too general). Then I would consider looking at the labs/prof in some schools and what they are doing, looking at the recent literature in that topic. Consider for example going to google scholar and typing keywords, and read the titles/abstracts of some published papers, anything sparks interest? any particular names that keeps occurring ? consider applying to their schools. Good luck!

Please advise: PhD (in the US) or Family (another continent)?
Gatech_ST replied to soitgoes's question in Questions and Answers
I was in similar situation نفس حالتك ? The question I would ask you, and my advisor did is to think about the reason behind your PhD goal. What are your career goals ? How PhD will help you achieve that goal? I will also consider Masters Vs. PhD and how that can help you achieve your goals? Masters usually takes 1.5/2 years so it isn't that bad compared to full PhD 4-6 years. اذا حاب نتكلم عن الموضوع انا عربي نفسك ابعثلي مسج ? Good luck !
