Mal83, your conjecture about American's admission process is pretty far off the mark. Like you, I submitted my application on the day it was due, but it was the second school I heard back from. It was the first school that I got my formal acceptance package from, with a letter of funding dated March 4. So no, when we submitted our applications has nothing to do with how we were reviewed by the admissions committee. I'm sure both our applications were considered at or around the same time.

It sucks that you didn't make it. And maybe you don't mean to, but I agree with wtncffts when he says you give off an air of entitlement or the impression of being tragically wronged somehow. The director of admissions mentioned, in multiple instances, how this year, they had the biggest and most competitive pool of applicants they've ever had. To be perfectly blunt, if you got rejected, there were surely some areas of your application which could have been more competitive. Do you really feel as if between your GREs/GPA/SOP and recommendations, everything was perfect? I got into most of my schools, and I still feel like I boogered my GREs, that my SOPs were far from my best writing.

You really ought to look inward a little more than you lash outward.

While I understand this is a frustrating process, I think everyone needs to step away from their mindset for a moment and realize their misplaced anger. Frankly, many of you are being very immature. Internet temper tantrums aren't becoming and the energy could be better spent. Ad Coms are people too. They have families, classes, grad students, research and conferences. It's a lot of work. The wait is long and hard on all of us, but I'm sure reading 34 "I first realized I wanted to be (profession) when I was 8 years old" sops is just as painful.

I agree. My puppy kept me awake until 4AM because she was scared of the rain, so only adopt a puppy if you really want to be licked, jumped on, and regularly chewed, if you are prepared to provide cuddles on demand, to clean up excrement, and to arrange your grad school schedule around a dependent creature who can't talk. In return, you will be treated like a hero by someone who thinks you are the center of the universe and doesn't care a wit about your research progress.

But don't adopt a puppy just to pass the time until you hear from grad schools. Adopt a puppy (preferably from a rescue or humane society) because you want someone to love and to be loved for the next 10-18 years: I hope mine are still here when I receive tenure. That's a commitment!

it was kind of misleading to just say only seven students were admitting without qualifying that you meant sociocultural only considering many people who post here are in other subfields.

Anyways, I still doubt your data.
I have told multiple times that they only admitted 10 people and I've been told multiple times that they admitted 4 bioanth. The numbers don't add up. I think your source might mean 6, not 7. Someone else has posted that there were 6 sociocultural admits.

Also, I have been told there is one department-wide wait list. If the first person on the wait list is of one subfield, the person they pull off the wait list can be of any of the subfields.

Yeah. I can't really do anything about my ears (they're stretched to 3/4", but the contour is still relatively natural) but honestly, most of my extended family still hasn't noticed and I've had them for 7 years. I look extremely presentable when everything's covered, and even when its not. My u/g adviser hasn't seen my arms yet but he knows about my ears, etc and has never seemed bothered. My field school teacher saw me in shorts around the field house and knows i have arm tattoos and didn't make mention of it. I like the idea of playing it safe and letting people judge me on my ability first and my appearance later and I'll probably take that advice.

Also, anthropologygeek, I read through your post a second time. There's nothing "lucky" about not having any tattoos or body modification, I'm not a stray dog that got tattooed by the pound. We all make decisions that are right for ourselves

I'm just making some observations on what I have noticed about this process, having gone through it before. I'm also in graduate school. And yes, I am making observations (sorry, I wouldn't call them assumptions) that reflect on me - I try to be more practical about graduate school and what it is. It's all very romantic and dramatic to have this grand, profound decision to make that everyone is hanging on but I don't think it's very practical or realistic.

I'm sorry you thought they were jerks but A) creating their cohort isn't, surprisingly, about you (this is a general note) and how many days were you going to congratulate yourself on having five offers before you turned it down?

I am going to say this as nicely as possible. When you know you're rejecting an offer, you need to just do it. Other people are waiting for you to make up your mind. I know it's fun to be the center of the universe and do I ever understand how self-absorbed this process makes a person but taking months to make a decision, even a complicated one such as this, reads as immature to me. Like, did you really never consider these possibilities? You've had plenty of time to research them and ponder them in the abstract.

I adopted Dez a few days after I finished all my applications. I needed someone to go through all these changes with. He's my best friend. I don't like my living situations (5 females under 21, do the math) so he's really my only thing making me happy right now. Especially because I'm expecting rejections for 3 of my schools now.

I'm a Chicago alum twice over (and not from MAPPS), so let me just agree with the first poster. There's nothing special about getting "accepted" (ha ha) into MAPPS. It's a cash cow for the university and everyone knows it. Under no circumstances should anyone borrow that much money to get a master's degree, especially a generic one in "Social Sciences." If mommy and daddy are willing to pay for it, well, why not? But if you can't get a fully funded offer to pursue a Ph.D., you've got no business pursuing a Ph.D., and you'll most likely live to regret it (again, assuming you don't have a trust fund or other money you get from elsewhere but don't like to talk about because it embarrasses your sense of independence). Your chances of using the program as a stepping stone are bad, and I vote STAY AWAY.
