I haven't gotten in to any schools (yet) but this will be my second time applying. I recommend giving yourself plenty of time to write your application and ask for reference letters. I personally feel like now is a good time to start! If there's someone you want to ask for a reference letter but are hesitant, offer them material and info about you when you ask. You should have a resume, statement of intent, and previous course work available to review. It looks really good on you to be prepared!- 1,373 replies

Hi! From my understanding it’s definitely preferred to have all prereqs completed by the application deadline but as long as the class grade is in for Aug 2022 you should be fine!

Disclaimer: I haven't been admitted to any school, just an applicant, so my advice is based on my personal experience and info gathered from others I believe McGill is the only English school that looks at cumulative GPA. With your overall I would probably focus on schools that look at sGPA. sGPA is the best way to improve your chances of getting into a school. McMaster this year offered interviews to those with 3.8+ sGPAs. It appears that most schools really value high grades! Would you consider applying to Western? They are one of the few schools who seem to take students with lower GPAs/high volunteer hours. Take more courses or even a semester if possible to boost your grades-aim for at least 3.7, but 3.8 is much safer. Make sure your academic reference letters are written by the highest level profs that know you. This isn't as important, but it can edge you just a little bit higher. Assuming that the amount of hours is good, I would also take a look at your personal statement. Don't rush it and have more than one person look over it if you can. Hope this helps

Hi Personally I would go the individual route if emails are available. Depending on how big the clinic is sometimes they have a coordinator who arranges these things as part of their job.

Can anyone who applied to U of Alberta this year clarify how they calculated GPA? I know they’re not including grade from Winter 2020. Does that mean that the grades from only 3 semesters are actually considered since Winter 2020 still counts toward the 60 credits?

Hello everyone! I need some help with ORPAS sGPA. I’ve taken an additional semester of 5 half courses, otherwise my courses fit the typical university structure of 10 half courses per school year. How does ORPAS calculate the remaining 5 needed half courses? Is it just the grades from the winter semester of 3rd year or the entire GPA for the 3rd year that are used to make the remaining grades?

It really depends on what school you’re applying to and where within the last 20credits the original courses falls. For the schools that use ORPAS, if the original time you took the course is not within the last 20 courses it isn’t taken into consideration at all. If it is within the last 20 courses, I believe both are considered and both grades count. Anyone please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong!

Thank you, that does help I think my biggest questions in regards to Alberta is if their new admissions standards meant more/less people applied and if the average admission GPA changed.

Yeah I’m likely going to be one of those people! All of the program admissions seem to be really affected by the COVID-induced relaxing of admissions. Like mac’s average sGPA of people getting interviews jumped from 3.8 to 3.9 (please correct me if I’m wrong) and Western went from 450 to 530 apps this year! It’s insane!! Does anybody know how Alberta’s admission numbers were affected?
