  1. @dr_megaevilThank you for starting this thread! I am in a similar situation as @cs4152008. I do not have children yet, but am planning on starting sometime during my doctoral program. It is so helpful to hear from others who are planning to or who already have children. I really appreciate when programs address this topic and state that they are supportive of students who plan on having kids. I hope that most programs are flexible and supportive.

Have any of you gotten a feeling from programs regarding whether classes will be in-person or virtual in the fall? I know how hard it is to predict what will happen between now and then, but it would really help with planning purposes for those who would be moving to a new city! I imagine those with children would especially want to know this.

Have any of you had pre-application meetings with POI in Harvard PHS program? I was just curious about interviews as they encourage students to talk with POI however says there are no interview requirements.

I reached out to a professor within the Infectious Disease Epi track a few months before the application deadline. She responded by essentially saying that the ID department has a policy of not speaking with applicants prior to application submission due to the large volume of emails they receive, and it's not exactly fair if some applicants are able to make a connection with a faculty member while others are not. I'm not sure if all tracks have the same policy, but I found this information helpful.

  3. Hi! So after receiving that generic "timeline update" email from JHU Epi last week and then not hearing anything, I assumed I was rejected. However, I just received an email asking to schedule an interview with a faculty member. The interview slots are Saturday 1/30 and Monday 2/1. For those who received that email last week and haven't heard anything, don't lose hope!

Anyone received the generic timeline update from JHU EPI yesterday (Jan 21) but not yet receive interview invitation? ?  I started to wonder if they are choosing interview candidates from the pool of applicants who got the update email... I saw some updates here about interview invitations soon after the status update...  anyways congrats to those who got the interview!

Hi! I received the email and have not received an interview invite either. I do think it's possible that they sent this to all applicants, not just those who will receive an interview. I'm trying not to read into it too much, but it is hard not to. I was feeling pretty calm about things, but that email definitely made me feel a little anxious!

  5. Hello! I just received a generic email from Johns Hopkins Epi regarding a "timeline update." The email says that "faculty have just begun the interview step of the application process and may be in touch shortly to set up online interviews with each of the qualified PhD applicants for the Department of Epidemiology." It ended with "we appreciate your application to our department and hope that we are able to speak soon." Sharing just FYI.

As of now, I'm out at Penn, Pitt, and Emory. All PhDs.

Still no invites for interviews. Now I'm convinced I'm never getting out of my dead end job or advancing in the world.

    Still waiting for:

DrPH: BUSPH, Harvard, Columbia, Hopkins, GW, Penn State

PhD: Brown, Northeastern, UMass, UMd, UNC, Tulane, Temple, Drexel, Rutgers

My brother died by suicide at 32 years old Nov 16. I have to try and pick up the pieces. This whole thing is a mess. I regret even trying.

First of all, I am terribly sorry about your brother. Many people have already stated what I'm thinking, but I want to say that the fact that you were able to complete your applications is a major accomplishment. Also--something that I've been trying to remind myself regularly--what these schools decide to do regarding your application says nothing about your value, who you are as a person, or your career potential. All of us applied not knowing whether we had a chance of getting accepted, and I think we are all brave for that. You will not have to be in your current job forever, and something great will absolutely work out for you. Please don't give up.

I received an interview invite from Harvard Population Health Sciences (Epidemiology) PhD today. Has anyone already gone through the interview? It's my first one so feeling a bit anxious about it!

I applied too, but haven't heard back. Would you mind telling me whether your application status still says "Submitted" in GSAS? Or has it changed to another status such as "Under Review"? I am anxiously overanalyzing.... :)

  8. Hello!

Thank you to everyone who has posted thus far. I'm sure many of us are feeling a bit anxious about the waiting game we're all playing. I just want to say that regardless of the outcome, I think all of us are brave for attempting this next step in our careers. We should all be proud to have chosen professions in the field of Public Health; the world needs us now more than ever!

With that being said, I'm interested to see how COVID will affect the admission process this year. I don't know about anyone else, but being stuck at home--as opposed to out socializing--has made it difficult not to dwell on the status of my applications. I'm trying hard not to compulsively check my email :) Wishing everyone the best!
