earlgreytee reacted to Psych13 in 2021 Clinical Psychology Applicants CANADA
Hey everyone!
I hopped on to share some great news: I GOT AN OFFER FROM MY DREAM PROGRAM!
School: University of Toronto, OISE
Type: MA in School and Clinical Child Psychology
Acceptance/Waitlist/Rejection: Acceptance
Type of Notification: Email from assigned Faculty Advisor, who gave unofficial offer; Email from Department to check SGS portal for decision, where two documents were uploaded (official offer letter and funding information)
Date Notified: March 24, 2021; March 25, 2021
DM for POI: Sure thing!
Thank you all for being so supportive to one another. I hope everyone gets accepted into the school of their dreams when the time is right for them.
Some quick facts about my application
My GPA wasn't so great but I hope that offers some hope for people applying! I also didn't major in psychology but had enough courses to be treated as equal. I did better in my last year but honestly it wasn't that competitive. I did, however, have many publications and conference presentations/posters. I work at two different hospitals and a lab at UofT. My three references were all professors with two of them being child and adolescent clinicians: a psychiatrist and psychologist. I think it was my referees, letter of intent, and CV that made up for my marks

hiiii all, v random but please message me if you'd like to chat about starting a program in the fall, moving (?!?!), the frustration of applying multiple times, anything you want, but /especially/ imposter syndrome ? i wanted to put it out there since this is such a competitive program where it may seem that the odds are stacked against us, and it's so so easy to let setbacks make us forget how capable and deserving we are. i'm definitely feeling this way even as i start a new and super exciting chapter of my life, and i'm sending love to anyone else that is too ❤️

Accepted to Lakehead, 3rd time applying to clinical programs.
To people that are applying for the first time, second time, third time - Keep persevering. Keep volunteering, gain research experience, put time into good mentoring relationships, build your CV, push for publications, work hard and don't despair. It's important to be honest about the fact that this is not an easy process and if it doesn't work out, your efforts are still great and this may just not be your year. Strength and guidance to everyone accepted and rejected this round.

Just wanted to share something with everyone that I hope will help - when making a decision, it is not only research fit that matters but also how the POI is as a human being (personality/ethics/mindset) that will make or break you in grad school. I got accepted after 3 years of applying, and found out that my supervisor was super nice during the interview but quickly turned unsupportive, toxic, exploitative, and overall horrible when the semester started. I thought this was all in my head or that I'm too soft, but it turned out that 3-4 other students have filed a complaint against them in the past 2 years and they are currently under investigation due to their misconduct and unfair treatment of their grad students. I voluntarily withdrew and have to apply again to other places (as I didn't want to switch to another supervisor (there wasn't a good research fit with anyone)).
As such, I highly recommend speaking with their current or past students if you can (I never got the chance to - should have been a red flag) and getting their opinions on how the POI is as a PERSON. So so important! It'll save you lots of time, money, and your self-confidence in the future.

Email invite directly from POI. So excited! This application season has been BRUTAL. Obviously not a sure thing but nice to have some hope again...had kind of given up this year. On my fourth year of applying...if this is what you want don't give up!

Very excited to say that I just received an invite from my POI at York to interview sometime next week (Clinical-Developmental Program). He also mentioned in his email that the clinical-developmental virtual open house will be February 26th so that might help give you a sense of when you can expect to be contacted by - I'm sure lots of professors have not reached out to applicants yet
