  1. So I emailed to ask about my application status and found out that I actually accidentally applied for MS instead of PhD. I went through all the correspondence from that particular uni and realised they did state MS rather than PhD. Clearly I was too blind to notice. How should I respond now? Try to plead with them to consider my application as PhD? Apparently I was also told that it is likely I can get accepted into the Masters, but there is no funding for Masters.
  2. found out that I accidentally applied for the MS program instead of PhD when I emailed to ask about my status. Somehow that's worse than a rejection.

  3. Just spent the last two hours looking up group tours! This shall be my consolation prize if I don't get in anywhere.

  5. Yeah definitely! I remember hesitating for 6 months before deciding to take the plunge because of the fear of rejection.
  6. I didn't really do anything except emailed my BFF at work with a ' =( ' , but I've got great plans to go on a trip to somewhere nearby. Holiday Whoohoo! I also really like all the beer/wine ideas..
  7. Emailed the grad director and was told it was unlikely I would get accepted

  9. Does this apply to all mathematics or just applied maths?
  10. Agreed. Everyone who applies to top schools are qualified and has top everything. I've heard nothing from most schools too. Then again, I already have a 'Plan B' secured, so not getting in is just going to be an ego thing. And if it comes to that, I know what I DON't want to hear is all the stuff that's meant to be consolatory.
  11. is beginning to think not hearing any news is bad news... oh well...

that's totally what it feels like :/

  12. I search for my field and check those results only, then usually its clear who's talking to who. Although I have to admit I accidentally submitted results with errors twice (pretty obvious errors) and then I gave up and decided there's something wrong with my eyes.
  13. I don't think there's anything wrong with asking, although if I didn't get it the first time, its unlikely I'll get it the second time...
  14. Agreed! As early as you can think of. Some of the content in the GRE subject is third year level material, so that needs some serious studying.
  15. I did actually start juggling! And I also tried painting. Out of general interest rather than because I have extra energy. I have a whole list of low-priority hobbies which keeps growing, so usuIally I never find that I have extra time
  16. That was what I really should have done. The application process really needed time. I ended up spending late nights researching different unis, studying GRE, finding out I missed the fulbright scholarship dateline, hastily composing the SOP etc. Can be done, just more stressful.
  17. This thread is so interesting! I don't think I'm all that unique, but I'll name a few things for fun 1) I had to skip over that sp _ _ _ r picture up there really quickly 2) I practice martial arts 3) I can be really quite antisocial without meaning to =(
  18. I so agree with this thread! People ask "What is your top choice?" , "Which schools have you applied?" (followed by a "wow") and "Have you heard from any of your applications yet?" even before I submitted my application. I will answer honestly but it is getting on my nerves. It's like for everyone else they're just saying that to make conversation, they don't really care anyway.
  19. I think its important to talk about how both of you are going to handle the distance. Clearly if one of you expects to be chatting on the phone everyday and the other expects not so often, things won't go well. So I think communication is Very important, whether its chatting online, emails, phone calls, webcam. Do something special once in a while, send a card, send a letter. Just my experience of 2yr+(and still going ) , long dist is hard, but a normal relationship also has its own problems anyway.
  20. I really doubt an advisor would be pissed off that you don't want to fly. You need to do what's best for you and your supervisor will do what's best for him. But if you were to want to go to a conference in say south korea, you can't simply spend 6 days and take a train. I would have thought coming to an understanding on the issue with your advisor before you start the phd would be good but since you've already started, you could try to start a discussion by asking him about how many conferences he expects you to attend, or where the conferences are held, to understand what he has in mind planned for you
  21. I'm interested in mostly modelling, maybe climate science, nanotechnology, materials modelling etc. Do most people do some research(like summer research or work with a prof etc) before deciding what they're interested in, or just try to decide base on what interests you during undergrad?
  22. Also consider your school's history of people getting accepted at top schools and your position in your school , e.g are you top 5% of your class , top 1% or so on. I used those to help me decide what sort of schools I should aim for. And of course there is that factor of luck, so aiming high is always good.
  23. OMG that makes complete sense, considering that I actually changed my mind every 2 months from last December till about July before I made up my mind. Although the 'no turning back thing' was after I studied a month for the GRE (since it would be a waste of effort not to take the test after studying for it, and since I took the test it would be a waste of money not to apply etc. kind of discussion with myself) That was a good outline Tskinner, so far I've compeleted Step 1 !
