Moderator Note: A few people seem unhappy (and reported) the posts about attractiveness, etc. above. Yes, they are off-topic, but to suggest that they are derailing an otherwise streamlined discussion about the GRFP is a bit off base. This thread has obviously meandered... That said, please direct further discussion on the topic of relative attractiveness of student bodies to The Lobby. Further discussion on the issue that is completely unrelated to the GRFP will be deleted or moved at the discretion of the moderators.

I really don't understand what decision there is to be made? Take the NDSEG and have five years of funding if you get the NSF too. Why would you wait?
-
So, does it go by high school location, where you currently are or where school is? If you are in grad school already does it go by permanent address or school address?
-
Is your funding for more than one year? My dept. seems to do things year by year, which makes me nervous... for questions about Tempe, go to the city guide forum - I believe there is already a thread.
-
The point is we know that there is a finalized list (at least for that discipline) and that hopefully things will be moving along now.
-
wow! what a jerk! In an ideal world you would actually not win the NSF until after your first year on the NDSEG so you could take full advantage of both: year 1: on NDSEG, apply for and win NSF year 2: on NDSEG, defer NSF year 3: on NDSEG, defer NSF year 4-6: on NSF though everyone would hate you for being that unbelievably flush.
-
Hmm. I never heard about funding either (one of the reasons I didn't go out for the visit weekend).
-
I think mine changed at 400 and was something other than Mocha for a brief time before I became a mod.
-
now now, this is gradcafe. We have all the premium student blends so I assume at least 30 percent (number out of you know where) on here will get it!
-
this is why you should wait until you have all info... not sure what you should do now.
-
I kind of agree w/this. NDSEG changed their notice to 'sometime this week' or whatever they did and still released the results reasonably early on 3/31.
-
Did you apply too pilgrim? It seems most people in ed don't even realize the fellowship exists or that they are eligible! I've learned so much this app season - enough to know that I probably botched the proposal (since I've been out of school for so long I was kind of in the dark), but I will try again next year and I know my proposal will be stronger at least.
-
wow, all these posts make me realize that I'd be lucky to only be in the bottom 70 percent...I'm sure it is more like bottom 10
-
I figured chickenandwaffles meant should he/she delete that post so we all attempt to hack and then get disqualified leaving the awards all for him/her.
-
You can do this kind of surreptitiously by writing to your POIs at those schools with an email asking how you can improve your application for next year (and mention that you won the NDSEG and will be extending your Masters and using a year of the funding for that).
-
No one who posted about getting an award is willing to come on here and tell us about it?
-
that's what I thought. but I'm also looking via a different computer than I normally use, so it could be throwing me off...
-
I've heard of people hearing late in the game, so I wouldn't completely lose hope. I'm in the same situation w/one program... Also, I did get an acceptance from one program w/a late deadline just last week.
-
Ed programs are rough on the funding... I made sure to apply to programs that say they offer every student funding and even then some of them said they had nothing for me! (though I was lucky enough to get funding offers at a few)
-
They let you defer two, but you can forfeit other years (you make out better forfeiting one of the NSF than one of the NDSEG).
-
it does look different! but nothing really earth-shatteringly interesting, is it? ETA: They also took off the login for 'view your rating sheets,' which was up yesterday...
-
Why would this preclude you from applying again? I applied for NSF and plan to my next two years and I graduated from undergrad in 1997... I also hold another grad degree (in an entirely unrelated field), which meant I had to write the explanation about switching fields, but it didn't disqualify me.
-
plus, isn't the tuition money more? I would think your institution would be happy to not have to make up the tuition difference that they would w/NSF and give you more in supplemental aid because of that (you lucky dog!).
