I don't know why I even bother. I'm already assuming rejection and trying to find resources for applying next year.

ah, yes! that's what I thought, but missed the part about forfeiting the NSF for one year to get the higher amount from the NDSEG. I plan on applying for NSF again (and again) if I don't get it even in the off chance I do get NDSEG.

If you were so blessed as to receive both, I think you can defer the NSF for two years and that way you get five years of funding (two on NDSEG and three on NSF). Do I have this right?

This is what it says: If I start September, I won't have 12 months before the end of August my second year...

I've emailed and called and don't get any answer via email and the phone answer I got was less than satisfactory: lady said "I've been out of town for a couple of months, but I think they've gone through a process and I believe if you haven't heard anything than you can assume you didn't get in." Uh, yeah, really helpful, eh? I'm not sure what my final research will look like since I haven't started school yet and I'm open to go on a 'wonderful grad school journey of interests,' so I think my final research will look different from my proposal. If I don't get it, I'm going to apply again next year and the following year!

oh no they did-n't! and what do you mean you won't get notified at all if you don't get it? do they really notify people in May?

lol! at least they know people are stalking the website.
  17. I had a pretty early acceptance too, but I have to say although I was definitely relieved, I was also a little down when the waiting was over. Like the build up to Christmas morning and the little sadness that all the hype is over. Maybe I'm rare in feeling this way... My apologies if this thread rubs those that don't have any acceptances the wrong way. It was not my intention

and after we were singing their praises at being so kind as to give us a date as opposed to the 'keep them guessing' NSF!
  19. I adore this sentence.

yeah, um, 4% for my group. not f-ing likely. ETA: though there was a huge call in those military postings for my subarea (learning and cognition)...hopefully they will see it that way too
  22. true, I think I'd be happy w/at least one acceptance, but you are right...it wouldn't be so much fun w/none. I'm sure we will all apply for and get rejected from many grants in the future though - so we will get our bad days too.

what are the stats on NDSEG? only a handful get it, right? how many apply?
  24. I guess what I'm saying is if you didn't get some enjoyment out of at least a few aspects of this process, then the life of an academic isn't going to be fun for you. (note: this is said slightly tongue in cheek lest it be quoted further) In about six year's time we will be waiting on our own grants to come through to let the next batch of students, some of whom we could have our hearts set on, know if they are going to be funded (or admitted at all). It will be a lot of the same stuff: writing, applying and waiting, but with stakes that go beyond our own lives.

I'm guessing they are beholden to external factors and may be waiting on funding info, etc. to see how many they can give out?
