I tend to think that online programs are somewhat of a "cash cow" for a University. What are your thoughts? Is it really worth it to do online classes vs. in seat classes, especially in light of recent college shutdowns moving to online education. I hope online is not a trend because I want a master's degree that is in-seat!

Hello, Jules here. I have been keenly interested in moving to New York for grad school. I was wondering how much Cashy-poo does it really take to do so. I figured that I would either get rid of or sell most of my stuff and try to find an apartment under $1000 and work 20 to 35 hours a week. I am really interested in this adventure. I figure I would get a MA in Sociology and then decide if I want to pursue a Phd somewhere. I figured that there was no way for me to move to New York and not work so I would be interested in knowing what most who do move there do for a living? Any thoughts would be appreciated. If you have or are planning on moving to New York what are your plans for money?

If you are doing the online route I would stick with a in-state option, state university. I live in Missouri and the cost of the in-state option at The University of Missouri MSW is about half of that of the private schools....

Looking into Bowling Green State University for their Masters in American Culture Studies and/or Popular Culture. Does anyone know what people do with an MA in American Studies? Any thoughts are appreciated! - Jules

I am not sure of applying to NYU. I don't think it matters what school you go to. If you have passion and can verbalize why you want your MSW I'm sure some school will accept you. I would not get into more than a 1st years salary of debt to get a MSW. I personally plan on getting a MSW but will have to work a few years and then have my work pay for it.......

I was curious about this program and if they offer aid in the form of scholarships, assistantships or fellowships. Also interested in the MSW/MA Women's studies option. Any thoughts?

I would recommend you look at the websites of the state universities in areas that you are interested in. When I applied for Sociology grad school a long time ago I got into three schools out of seven masters programs. So it isn't impossible to get in a MA program, just look to apply at those with good funding. I would check out what kind of program you are getting yourself into, if they allow for electives and whatnot. Have you taken a statistics class? Some programs are really quite quantitative. Which is not my personal cup of tea, but anyway... another thing is you can take classes as a non-degree student to see if you like it, although you don't qualify for financial aid to do so. I wouldn't really recommend going to an unfunded MA program, you can find many that offer tuition waivers and stipends.

If you are talking about a BA in Sociology I would suggest you look for jobs in government or non-profits.

Hello, I read your post and wanted to comment. I have a bachelor's in Sociology and work for a state agency, specifically I deal with unemployment claims. While I am pursuing a Master's (in Public Affairs) to potentially get a management job in state or federal government, I have also thought about a Master's in Sociology. Let me tell you, my cube mate, who is a Debbie Downer admittedly suggested that a Master's in Sociology won't get you a "better" job than what a Bachelor's in Sociology can. A lot of jobs that you can do with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology in my state (Missouri), include Probation and Parole, Case worker for Social Services and similar. If you have two statistics classes with your bachelor's degree you can get a Research Analyst position with the state. I have always enjoyed sociology and have a desire to pursue more education, but you might be doing yourself a disservice if you have to take on more debt and you haven't done anything more than food service. If you plan on getting a PhD for anything but teaching you more than likely are wasting your time and money. I currently have taken classes with PhD students in Sociology who plan on doing work in the non-profit world, which does NOT require more than a bachelors. And you would be surprised at how little non-profit managers make.....Unless you want to live, breathe and sleep Sociology I wouldn't pursue a PhD. There are a lot of people who have a master's degree. That doesn't guarantee a job. And it would be a shame to do a PhD and not get a teaching job and be loaded with debt and have no real world skills. There is no real job market for sociology Master's degrees as far as I know. Hello, while this may not the most timely of posts, I was wondering if anyone had insight into the New School Sociology program. I have heard that they don't really fund many students and that it is a "bring your own money" school. Is this correct?

Interested in actor training programs that don't require a trust fund. any suggestions? I don't believe I would need a mfa to start. Just exploring options....

If your set on getting your mfa I would just go for it. You might want to try to get into a school that funds your education so you not getting into too much debt. Why not just prepare for the GRE and get good letters of recommendation now and see what happens.... you can always go out and work a job.....

I would check out phd rankings in historical sociology. You also might check out Binghampton University.

"Applicants to the Free-Standing Masters program are not eligible for funding"... is a quote that would make me re-consider even applying. Sounds like a cash cow program to me. Maybe it would work if you have the money or just really wanted to be in NYC. That sucks though.

I don't think you are alone on applying there. I have looked at their website and they are strong in gender, sexuality and social movements and social change. SIUC is in a remote area two hours south of St. Louis, MO. The town itself is pretty small, but has a large student population. It depends on what specializations you are interested in I guess. Southern Illinois is pretty rural. I had a friend who went there for psychology, so I don't have first hand knowledge of the program but it looks pretty good to me.

I am more than likely going to be applying for a part time MSW program. I was wondering if anyone here knew of anyone who does drama therapy with their MSW? I would like to do clinical work in the mental health profession and seminars in drama therapy.

You could start with doing a search for sociology ma programs. Also, not all ma programs require the gre.

I always considered The New School an excellent choice, but check into how much it costs. It really appears to be a place for p.w.m. (people with money). Lots of money to go there... Now up to$1800 a credit hour... I would go there If I won the lottery or had a sugar momma or daddy willing to pay for it....

I am seriously considering my ma/phd future and would like to know if anyone here knows anything about the following programs: university of Kansas, Kansas state, university of Missouri, southern Illinois at Carbondale? I have looked at the websites and I like what I see, but wondered if anyone else had any insight into these schools.
