Gad to hear I'm not the oldest on here. I don't know if they look specifically at age or not. In my case they will have an idea that I am older because i talk about my previous graduate work and my teaching experience in my statement. As for kids, I have five and they are in a big range. 18 down to 3. My oldest is applying to college this year...it is kind of odd that we are going through similar experiences at the same time.

It is a little odd. But, I'm in a little different situation. First off, I'm old. Okay maybe 39 is OLD but it certainly is older. Also I've been teaching in college for the last five years and that is just a part of the gig. But, being on this side of it has certainly made me more appreciative of the letters I do write...no pushing it off to the last minute...I know to well how that feels as the applicant.

Feeling some pain! I've been a bit overwhelmed the last couple of weeks with teaching classes and several other projects I have gong on. So, late last night I found out that my thesis adviser hadn't submitted letters to Tyler or Missouri. Tyler only requires two so they have their minimum but Missouri is another issue. Still my adviser should be my strongest recommendation so it painful to have this happen. I should have caught this sooner but as I said I've been swamped and we had contact early-mid January so I didn't think it was an issue.

@jilly11, Do you know if NYU typically interviews all all potential admits? @slacckkid89, I also applied to UChicago. Looking at the previous years it seems like they will likely do admits this week. The previous range has been Jan 30- Feb 5. But, of course that could be completely different this year. I also find myself getting very anxious...it is really killing my focus I got an admit last week but won't find out about funding for several weeks so in some ways that doesn't help at all. I have three programs that could start letting people know as early as this week (going off past history) U Chicago, Temple, & UC Irvine. Historically some of my programs have acceptances as late as mid march...So, I likely will be struggling for a while. My last year has been tough and I would like to have an idea where my life is heading.

You aren't the only one. I've been wondering the same thing about Duke.

jmb04, Did that happen to be UC Irvine? If so do you know if they were interviewing all students they are considering? As for the question above. I received an acceptance to Graduate Theological Union's Art 7 Religion program but have heard nothing from my Art History applications to this point.

PhD applications for 2012-2013 chit chat...

Congrats. What other programs did you apply to? While I'm certainly interested in the theological side my approach is from the opposite direction. I'm interested in how the artists apply their faith to their art and also the approach of artists who are not specifically religious but deal with religious themes. Do you happen to know how many people are in the Art & Religion program? I just realized that I never even asked that question.- 348 replies

Are you Art & Religion also or in another area? The funding is a big issue. So, while i really like the program and want to get excited I am holding off until I hear about funding. The Presidential Scholarship would be great but it sounds like they only give that to one person in each area.- 348 replies

Thanks for the source. I have spoken to both faculty and students but I understand that none of us are as objective as we think.- 348 replies

Any idea how to find the hard data? I've asked them about their placement and they have told me where there students are typically placed. But, that isn't quite cold, hard data.- 348 replies

I haven't really posted over hear as I am more of an art historian than a religious studies guy. But, my area of interest is in modern/contemporary art and religion. I just got accepted to Graduate Theological Union's Art & Religion program. No one on the art history board will know much about GTU so I thought I would ask over here. What are people's impression of GTU and its reputation?- 348 replies

I fully understand this point. In fact, I'm concerned that while my artistic background gives me a unique perspective that having an established career in the visual arts may be seen negatively by some committees. I also, understand that I will have to lessen my artistic production. But, over the last few years I have been teaching and I was a department head for four years. So, I confident that I will be able to maintain a modest studio practice. But, I also agree that this commitment is not something that the art historians I study with will understand. It will be a part of my personal life but not something I seek to explicitly brig to my studies.
-
I don't know what their practice is when it comes to interviews. While the lack of news from UC Irvine is concerning I did get an acceptance letter today from the Graduate Theological Union program in Art & Religion. It is different than the other programs for which I applied but fits very well with my interests. My only concern there is that I want to work within an art history not religious studies environment. But still, I am excited.
-
I saw that some people had interviews with UC Irvine last week. I guess not getting interviewed is a bad sign.
-
I haven't visited there. I'm down in Louisiana right now and it would be quite a trip. I decided that I would wait on any visiting I needed to do until I have, hopefully, offers. But, having the art history and studio work at Tyler so closely associated is a big plus in my mind.
-
I understand the pain. I was shut out last year. But, I really didn't put the proper homework into the application. Not that they were bad but there were certainly some issues that I tried to fix this year. Though I have to admit that it did bug me to look at the stats of at least oone of the schools that rejected me and see that their incoming class had worse "numbers" than I had. Did you apply only to Delaware and Tyler? Tyler is also one of the programs to which I applied.

I would love to have the camaraderie here. My situation is a little different and older looking at going back for my PhD. But, that doesn't mean I'm not also obsessive. I just have to balance it with teaching and a family. Also, I'm in a situation where I am both applying to jobs and PhD programs...though my personal choice is PhD my wife would probably prefer a job. It is a crazy time in my life but I am getting more anxious. As for top choices...I'm actually not 100% sure. Yale has been my dream for a while. After that I'm not sure. GTU has actually been on my mind a lot. Really, I'm just trying not to emotionally invest until I start finding out where I get accepted.

They said it won't negatively influence anything...we'll see.

So, I found out from Bryn Mawr yesterday that they had not received my GRE scores. I had ordered the scores at the end of November and all the other schools had gotten them so I didn't think it was an issue. I contacted ETS and they sent them Dec. 5th both electronically and by mail. So, i had to send Bryn Mawr a screen shot of my scores and then also give them the batch information for the Electronic transfer. Very frustrating to deal with this while the committee is looking at applications. I hope this doesn't negatively affect me.

You can check out my website. The thing I liked about Pratt was that the two departments have a good relationship and there are a lot of students who do the joint degree.

I am an artist also. I've applied to a couple of the same schools that you are. For me, I've never really seen my art and historical studies as different ventures they are two sides of the same coin that inform each other. I'm in a bit different situation though. I've actually been out and teaching in college for five years but I've wanted to move more toward my art historical work which requires I get the PhD. My interests are also unique, though very different that yours. I'm interested in the connection between modern/contemporary art and religion. Try finding a POI with those interests! Not and easy thing.

I started my MFA with two kids and had my third during the program. It was hard at times but overall it wasn't too bad. My wife was okay with me having an odd schedule. I don't know that I have any particular advice just wanted to assure you that it is doable.
