  1. Hey guys! I hope applications are going well! I wanted to stop in an introduce myself and see if there were any last minute questions I might be able to help with. I'm a third year doc student at Mississippi State University and I love it here! We are a very behavioral program, which definitely influenced my decision with coming here. Anyways, feel free to ask any questions, and best of luck in the application process!
  2. It really is about finding a schedule that works best for you! For me, every day at 6, but then again I'm typically in bed by 9pm (on days that I don't have night classes) and 10pm the rest of the week. Those times of the semester that I have to cut down on sleep means I wake up earlier. There are no all nighters for me! I think it really is about figuring out what works best for you!
  3. I'm currently in a PhD program and dating an undergrad in a different field (school psychology and kinesiology) and I really see it no one's business. I have no intention of disclosing the information to anyone at the school. Of course, if he ended up in a class I was TA-ing for, that would be a different matter, but just as a relationship, I don't see the problem.
  4. I finished undergrad when I was 22 and started then as well. I turned 23 in December of the first year of my program. I never skipped any grades and completed undergrad in 4 full years. Maybe it was just the way my birthday fell?
  5. I just got done (on Friday) with 9 credits of summer classes, in addition to working. Do you really think I'm ready to go back to school? Not even a little bit.
  6. I'm the baby of my PhD cohort, starting when I was 22. The others are all 26 or older. It has taken some time to get used to the idea, but I feel like I act more mature than my age, which definitely helps.
  7. I use SPSS on my Mac all the time and haven't had any problems with it. That being said, if you like your Mac and it is only 1.5 years old, I wouldn't recommend buying something new just to have it. We spend enough money in grad school!
  8. There are several "Mid-Life" grad schoolers in my program right now, and we all love them and support them in every way we can. However, as it is for everyone else, the decision to start grad school shouldn't be taken lightly and now there is the added stress of adding in your family. Best of luck with your decision!
  9. I want to have options in case I don't want to work in the schools for the rest of my life. There isn't a whole lot you can do with your Masters/EdS in School Psych that isn't in the schools, but so many doors open with your PhD.
  10. I don't think you should choose a PhD program based on what is easiest to get into. It should be something you love and want to work for, otherwise it will be a waste of both your and everyone else's time and money.
  11. So sorry it hasn't been a good month for you Hopefully everything will get figured out soon enough!
  12. Super excited to find more grad student bloggers! I blog at Life According to Amanda and would love to see some fellow GC-ers over there!
  13. I'm glad to see someone is potentially in the same situation I am. I've recently met a guy and we have gotten extremely close over the past month or so. I'm 23 (just finished my first year of my PhD) and he is 20 (turning 21 in September, working on his undergrad degree, planning on going to school for Physical Therapy). It has taken me some time to mentally get over the fact that he graduated high school a year before I graduated college, but we will see how things go!
  14. This time last year I was busy packing my things! I moved 800 miles for grad school on August 4th so a year ago today I was spending time with friends and family and packing. Now, I'm a year closer to my PhD and finishing my summer classes. It is crazy how much has changed in a year!
  15. Hey everyone! I just received an email (as I'm sure many of you have) and just wanted to share with people thinking about next years application season! 16. Working on getting information together for the next year's cohort! I can't believe how much my life has changed in the past year...

  17. Thank you so much for your response! We are trying to make our transitions as easy as possible, and I know information like this would have been helpful when I was moving here!
  18. Hi all, I'm working on putting together some information for our new students when they make their decision. Information so far includes a list of apartments, the process of registering for classes, how to order your text books, etc. I wanted to check in here and see what would be helpful for YOU? I was in your shoes just last year, and I want to help my program make things as smooth of a transition as possible! Thanks
  19. I've actually become stronger in my faith since starting grad school. It might have something to do with the fact that I moved 800 miles from home, but I easily spend 5 or more hours a week at church, plus more time spent in prayer and reading the Bible. My church also has a great college center that I can go to 24/7 and study ... which definitely makes for a nice, distraction free area!
  20. First of all, congratulations to both of you! Last year around this time, I was in the exact same situation ... finding somewhere to live over 800 miles away. Like ScoutFinch, there was an off-campus assistance site, however that didn't show much luck for me. I then went to Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace (do so carefully!). Eventually I found a one bedroom apartment that was reasonable for me to live in, just by looking at apartment complexes online. I was able to send my application in and put down a security deposit and first month's rent when I moved here. Best of luck! Let me know if there is anything I can do to help more!
  21. I wish I had more advice about the PsyD programs and which program you are specifically applying for. Your GRE scores look competitive (although I'm not sure how the new GRE is measured) and the assessment background would be helpful. Also, your GRE and GPA are only part of the application process--your SOP, LOR, fit and interviews will be much more helpful in determining your chances. Volunteering for a crisis hotline couldn't hurt but I don't think it is something you necessarily have to do to be more competitive (unless you are looking at a crisis-heavy school). Best of luck! Let me know if I can help you with anything!
  22. Is the M.ED. program NASP accredited? I know that you will want to go to a NASP accredited program, particularly if you want to be credentialed as a School Psychologist. I went through the application process last year, let me know if there is anything I can do to help!
  23. I'm in the same situation as you. I have one book that I actually went ahead and purchased for my Kindle. It was a book for a more "general course" and not entirely field specific so I felt comfortable knowing that I would not need to book in the future. I know that there are individuals in my cohort that have purchased the book and know that if need be they wouldn't mind me looking it over. Furthermore, from the three days of classes I have experienced, assigned reading is done by chapters, which are able to be looked up through the Kindle.
  24. Ohio to Mississippi.... I think I can relate!
  25. I am a Keurig girl. I got one for Christmas this past year, and I haven't gone back since. It is super helpful because I don't drink a lot of coffee (though I'm sure that will be changing soon) and they have some awesome flavors!
