  1. Agreed, I don't know what it takes or costs to make an app for smart phones, but I hope someone who does makes it. I do also realize that this site can get slow when not in application season and applications tend to require computers, although it is a bit of a classist reality, maybe they just don't see the need to build access for people who do not have computers. Anyhow, hopefully some bright fun things, how is everyone??? how are the nerves as you wait for responses? any responses?
  2. I wish. Half the time I don't bother responding on my phone because it's not very user friendly.
  3. I got his with that feeling of oh my, what have I done, right after I turned in the application too. ENJOY YOUR FREE TIME NOW!! lol, I started reading every book on my night stand once I was in, didn't have enough time to get it through them though. I wish I acted like I was going to be in ahead of time. Oh well. I'm planning to do a lot of program development for underserved high school students, but the further in I get the more I'm expanding that out more and more. Also I plan to do a little teaching, not that I signed up for a specific track of being a teacher, but it's always there. What I HOPE to do, quietly run the world in the background so it's a better place? too big-headed of me?
  4. I'm feeling really lucky right now, I didn't have to interview for some reason. I'm really curious what it will be like for you to with UPenn and NYU (I'm assuming) as they were the other two schools I looked at. What the heck, and Simmons too!
  5. It's going really well! They tell me some day I will be able to sleep again and have something called a "social life". Have you heard of this? I'm kidding, I'm kidding! I am actually having a blast, it is a lot of work given I still have my job but I'm loving it and learning more then I even expected. LOL, I may start using centered text too! this is great
  6. Congratulations! That's fantastic!
  7. I don't know Penn's MSW program but also totally agree on the NYU/Columbia field placements being effectively the same. I have friends and family in numerous MSW programs right now, the NYU student is looking at placements that are reserved for just NYU and CU students, and the others are (at least in pandemic-land) having to work to find something in the city. I had the same experience with my masters at NYU and my Aunt had a similar one at CU... just a long time ago. @ebjc87, how's UPenn??? It was an option for me but I went the way of USC in the end. I've heard that UPenn is highly clinical with an analytic (is it Freudian?) lens and prepare you for a career in academics. I was really excited by it but my heart wanted to keep my macro focus going. Also, how big is your cohort?
  8. cheering for you all! hoping there is some good news out there?
  9. Fantastic! where all are you applying? Heading back to NYU? (Go Violets!)
  10. I'm with you on moving/commuting during the pandemic and there really are so many good programs right here! A fellowship app personal offer from Columbia sounds like a formal acceptance must be coming soon. If I remember my app with them correctly got a response before I was emailed to check the system. If you haven't checked lately, maybe you already have it waiting for you? (granted their system probably has changed in the last 10 years) Congrats on Fordham! Thanks for asking, its going really well. I am doing a bunch of data work right now myself -let me know if you want to do some extra credit data work before your school starts- and have found myself on some really cool research projects. Thankfully everyone in my close family has so far made it though the pandemic. Strangely one of the biggest changes is how many people are in school and can't go into class. We have all felt very privileged to have that be the thing we complain about. I hope you are your family are safe and healthy as well. And glad you are staying in NYC, the city is going to need a lot of support when we come out of covid-land (no pressure).
  11. Glad you brought this back, I checked a few days ago wondering how everyone was doing and if you were hearing back yet. I don't think I will ever forget waiting to get into my masters program. the constant checking my email and excitement the day the I actually started getting responses Did you end up sticking with Columbia, Fordham and Stonybrook?
  12. Hoping you are still checking on this thread, and that your application is going well!
  13. Hi Polak. It's great to have another person here to talk with. I'll be excited to hear how your UPenn experience goes. I was looking at their program as my second choice if I didn't get into USC. I'm really curious about the clinical lens and the use of research as a big part of a DSW. If you don't mind my asking, are you looking to use the degree for something specific, teaching, clinical practice, etc.?
  14. I had a lot of non social work experience on my CV when I put in my MSW application. One of the glories of applying to SW programs in my mind is that being human and talking about everything in life that makes you, you is a positive social work experience. If you learned what it takes to stay positive and relate to others through your working in retail or food service I say absolutely include it. Just make sure it is reflected in whatever essay you are providing them. That said, I am fully with Zippy that an up to date and relevant experience on top CV is needed. I too hope I have offered something helpful here, Good luck!
  15. I'm already going to USC for my DSW but haven't found a lot of community here for DSW students so if you don't mind I'll come hang out with you all!
  16. I'm going to need to stop and read the article. it's an interesting thought for me beforehand as someone with a MSW (normally looked at as a terminal degree) and getting the often looked at as unnecessary doctorate, where there are relatively few PhD's the DSW's are becoming far more abundant and I could see the market becoming flooded by people thinking that all they need is to be called Dr and life will go smoothly. I'll follow up with more thoughts post my reading the article, thank you for posting this!
  17. Well done on getting into schools and having options!!
  18. Edit:whoops! not the post I thought I was attaching. You may want to start your own thread.
  19. very good point, I don't know of any DSW programs that grant an MSW along the way. All that I have looked at have the MSW or equivalent as an admissions requirement. I can say for sure that USC does not (or NYU or UPenn).
  20. I'm not a school psych but I am a current USC DSW student. The program is flexible but still eats up quite a lot of time, they say to dedicate 10 hours + per week along with 3 major assignments per class and you have the option of taking 2 or 3 classes per semester. Also of note, USC is effectively a social work focused doctorate in executive leadership, nothing really clinical about it, you are expected to have your clinical skills when you enter. If your Ed.S in school psych already lets you hold a practice outside of a school setting you may want to look at other universities DSW programs for advanced clinical skills like NYU and UPenn (I'm sure there are many more but those are the two others I know well enough to talk about). Hope this helped.
  21. I would say that they are as they generally have larger cohorts and some have rolling admissions. From my time in a DSW program so far it seems that it may be changing slightly as they gain popularity and exposer. Also there are simply fewer schools providing DSW education... I'm over thinking this though, yes, I believe they are easier to get into.
