Accepted at Mills, waiting on funding; even if they waive tuition, it goes without saying that the cost of living in the bay is freakin ridiculous, so they'd have to offer a generous stipend or I'd have live on my little brother's couch for two years... too bad, bc I love the program!

I hope everyone is treating themselves accordingly after this grueling process, regardless of outcome. I ditched work today and am going museum hopping alone! Weee!

Me. I lost a lot of weight and expended lots of emotional energy on the applications process last year. This year has been much different.

Make as much work as you can in the next year, try to recognize any areas of improvement in terms of portfolio presentation, and don't be afraid to reach out to to the programs you're interested in about whether you're a good fit or not.

Czarina got a reaction from thepictureisstill in SVA Summer Program vs. Post Bac?? Help!
I didn't do either option. I went to the Vermont Studio Center residency, worked my butt off in the studio, revamped my practice, made more of an effort to reach out to other artists. Last year my grad apps didn't work out-- but this year I ended up getting into my first choice school with a full ride, so....my recc to you is to try to do a free/cheap residency, keep making work and talking to your peers, and most importantly, stay posi/confident!

Two years later I'm more jaded and wary of the SVA program; for how short it is it's really expensive (no grants available), PLUS the cost of living in NYC even for a short period. There are other residencies that are less expensive than the SVA program and include room and board!

If you're looking for the instruction and classroom setting -- look into community college/extension school courses. If you don't have a BFA you will inevitably have to play a little catch up, but remember that your BA will be an asset to your work in the long term.

I'm close to 15K deep in debt from undergrad. I've made payments on and off over the years when I've been able to afford it, but ended up at square one because of interest. No more debt for me. Can't have it.

Over the years I've watched friends struggle with garnished wages, overdrawn bank accounts, and daily harassment from debt collectors. I don't mean to sound dogmatic. Other artists' decisions are none of my business. I've just made the personal decision that I won't go back to school until I manage to get a full ride (or close to it), even if it takes more than one round of apps, or opting for a solid state school instead of an Ivy.

Ask yourself what exactly you're looking to get out of graduate school, then think of any possible question pertaining to how you intend to achieve those goals (in regards to which specific facilities you'll have access to, resources within the program, amount of faculty contact, exhibition opportunities). If possible, try to meet wiith a current student to get their perspective; they're the ones who will (hopefully) give you the real talk.

Don't be nervous. Remember that the application process is a two-way street, and a school that's ultimately a good fit will appreciate your enthusiasm and want you to come as much as you want to go.

Also -- have you reached out to any of the faculty members whom you're specifically looking to work with? If you can intiate a dialogue about yourself and your work, you'll establish an identity for yourself amongst the hundreds of applications that are received.

That sounds infuriating and I understand your frustration, as I've been in a similar situation. I personally felt like I dodged a bullet, and so should you. Better to find out earlier than later (aka before dropping loads time n money) if a school doesn't have their sh** together..

If you are still interested in a Post-Bacc program -- MassArt/SMFA/MICA are all great, with really warm and helpful faculty and efficient admissions. (I dealt with all three while going thru the Post-Bacc admissions process a few yrs back.. and ultimately couldn't go because of money).

If you ask in an even-keeled/professional manner I don't see how it could hurt you. If you're polite/succinct they're not going to blacklist you permanently.  Approach it from the angle that you're grateful for the consideration, would love to attend in the future, and if they're allowed to disclose any feedback about your application you'd really appreciate it.
