  1. Hurrah, gomer! I'm glad to see the result was a genuine victory for someone here. I'm not holding my breath for anything from SAIS until the 14th, which means the morning 15th for those of us on the other side of the world. Good thing my melatonin came in the mail today... Kidding! (except not really)
  2. You were contacted a few weeks ago to submit additional scholarship information, correct? The rest of us were not. Surely a terrifically succulent aid package is coming your way
  3. I also got $20K from GWU. Really have my fingers crossed for Georgetown's financial aid info to come out soon. NICE! Congratulations!!
  4. I'm in India right now too... and I haven't decided if that makes us better or worse off. I know that if I wake up in the morning at 7 AM and there is nothing in my inbox then my chances of hearing something that day are gone... which really just makes me want go back to bed at 7:05 AM.
  5. I'd love folks' thoughts on the Georgetown Department of Government. I applied (and was accepted) to the Master's program. I haven't found much on this program on the boards, though that may be due more to my poor search capabilities than anything else. I have been interested in the department since I was an undergraduate student, as my background is in democracy and governance and Georgetown offers one of the few masters in the subject. I know little about its reputation though and won't be able to visit campus before making a decision. I would welcome any thoughts on the program, especially on reputation, typical career path for Masters candidates in the program, pros and cons of such a small program, etc. Thanks!
  6. I will probably be there too! Georgetown has been my top choice since I was a junior in undergrad. Unless I get into SAIS with great funding (unlikely) or I get into WWS (even more unlikely) I will be there in the fall
  7. Hey SAIS applicants, while we wait I'd love to hear how you approached your policy memo. Anyone care to share? I'll start. Wrote about India's nonaligned foreign policy and why it is in India's (and the world's) best interest for India to start playing an active role in international diplomacy and democracy promotion. Fits in with my overall work experience and focus on international democracy. Tried to model it in the form of an Economist article: concise, straightforward, clear policy recommendations.
  8. My "at a glance" thought regarding your profile is that it sends no clear "message." Law firm in Beijing, studying in the Caribbean, neuroscience, med school then dropped out, etc. Everyone goes through periods of self-discovery, realizing this career wasn't for them, this major wasn't for them, etc. It's great you realized that about medicine before it was too late and had the guts to do something about it. There isn't anything wrong with that process. But it does make it a little harder for grad school admissions committees to see your clear commitment to IR/public policy and feel that your degree at their school is going to take you to great places in that field. One's profile and experiences do not need to be a tight little perfect package, but they should give the admissions committees a general sense of your story- where are you coming from and where you are going. If you do not want to accept at SHU, perhaps take the next two years to find your IR niche. Really finding what you love at one job or internship and trying to get more experience in that professional trajectory (preferably related to the mandarin skills you are working on) would be a great way to do so. You could address this journey in your SOP, which would probably be the most important component of your applications. Good luck with whatever you decide!
  9. No, I applied to (and heard back from) the Department of Government.
  10. In at Elliot. Congrats to the other admits, esp rebma... was hoping you'd get that good news after American!
  11. Your stats look great. I would bet that- by your own admission- your SOP may have been the deciding factor. I infer by your comment about it being twice as long as the others that you had to add a lot into the SOP that wasn't in your previous SOPs and that due to being burned out by so many apps you may have not revised and edited it as carefully. Multiple typos, not answering the prompt, rambling, etc could have contributed to a weaker SOP than your other ones. That is good news though, right? Meaning that the rest of your profile is great and you probably submitted stronger SOPs to your other schools. We all have applications that are stronger for some schools than others, and I bet that yours to your other schools are stronger. Bummer that the American result came first, but I bet good news is on its way
  12. I disagree a bit in that the self profiles posted on GradCafe over the past three years (and yes, I admit I have read most of them in the thumb-twiddling between January 15 and now) all rave about their SOPs. I have seen a lot of self-evaluations rate themselves "meh" while others flat out admit they left their SOP to the last minute, wrote the same one for each school, never really felt like they had a firm handle on it, etc. That said, I think the bell curve is legitimately shifted to the right for GradCafers, folks who may (may, not definitely) put more time into the application process and thus may solicit more feedback, create more drafts, and read more samples of strong SOPs distributed by schools' admissions blogs than the average applicant. And many of these self-assessed strong SOP writers on GradCafe have been quite helpful. I see posters with mediocre grades and GREs, good but not amazing work experience, who get into top schools. They cite their SOPs as extremely strong and list the reasons why. These posts have been quite valuable to me. All this said, does inflation still occur? Of course. I think surveys repeatedly show that 80% of the population rates themselves as "above average" drivers.
  13. I don't think we have confirmed it is official. SarahL, a present student, shared this information with us: As starving applicants desperately and hungrily seizing any tiny scrap of information we can, this update is what is sustaining most of us right now
  14. We're talking about it over in the Government Affairs forum- come over and chat (Short answer is no, results are not expected until March 15)
  15. My fiance was a Woody Woo so I spent a lot of time there a couple years back. The people are just wonderful. I don't know what I was expecting the first time I went to visit but students there are genuine, smart beyond book smart, interesting, and just great people. We are still good friends with many of them, all of whom are of course in public service and doing incredible things. Great school. I hope we have some GradCafers representing there this fall
  16. I had the same thoughts as you, Josh. On a whim I checked the Dates and Deadlines page yesterday morning and saw it finally revealed some sort of information on when we should expect notice. It seems a bit late coming out, although it also seems WWS sends out acceptances/rejections over several days, so perhaps many will find out before the final date of March 15. I am surprised no one has started a WWS thread this year. It's my pie-in-the-sky-super-reach-school but I'm still looking forward to having my admissions decision there resolved one way or another... as well as share in the successes of other GradCafe-ers who receive acceptances to WWS. Thanks for starting this thread!
  17. Don't worry, this forum will be aflutter with updates once SAIS and SIPA release decisions! You won't be able to miss it . I don't know about SIPA but SAIS will release theirs around March 14th.
  18. Congrats everyone! And legallyproper, props for the assistantship! I got in (MA- International Politics) but no funding.
  19. Princeton just updated their "Deadlines" page at last. "Decision notifcation: March 15, 2012"
  20. I'm wondering if acceptances are going out by program? I applied for an MA in International Politics and haven't heard anything. What programs did other folks who have yet to hear anything apply for? It seems we have a lot of acceptances on this board and a lot of great aid packages. Congratulations everyone!
