I'm loving this off-topic topic thread.

So, I just got invited to submit a paper for a conference at one of the schools I've applied to (the invitation is totally unrelated to my application). The only problem is, the conference is the same day as another conference I've submitted a paper to. Now, this one would be a better experience in terms of institutional "prestige" and because of the nature of the conference itself. I haven't heard back about the other conference, even though I was supposed to by early Jan. So, how long should I wait before I submit to the second conference? The deadline is coming up in the next few weeks, so I have a little time. I just don't know what I should do...blah.

Alright, who are the biggest bosses in literary history that were over-shadowed by their more famous relations?

I am going to go with Leonard Woolf and Branwell Bronte. Below is Branwell's self-portrait (I've seen it in person - pretty awesome).

It's funny to look back at this thread. I thought I was freaking out then?! Wow.

...This has been the longest few months ever. And another couple of long ones to go. Blahhhh.

I've read most of the stuff people are listing.

But my big gap is female writers. No Austen, no Brontes, no George Eliot, No Woolf, No Chopin, etc, etc, etc.

Started many of them, but they're all just so awful.

Some days it's just too difficult to think about getting rejected from everywhere, so I indulge my wildest fantasies of acceptance. It's a wonderful thing.

THIS. There's a kid in my creative writing workshops who practically writes entire stories in parentheses and it's like nails on a chalkboard. *shudder*

I'm with Timshel; I'll be beyond happy to go to any of the programs I've applied to. BUT, if I had to choose it'd totally be Brown.

I hate when people are grammar nazis in general. Yes, thank you, I know how to use grammar correctly, I'm a freaking English major. That doesn't mean I'm going to go out of my way to use it correctly when speaking in colloquial situations.

For instance, I have a friend who will correct me if I use double negatives or say "I could care less" instead of "I couldn't care less." I suffer from a perpetual case of inarticulateness. I know how to use the grammar, it just never comes out right.

Also, I hate when my mom texts. She doesn't use ANY punctuation. Usually texting etiquette doesn't bother me too much; I can handle a "youre" or even a "ur." But her texts usually read like: "Having chicken for dinner ok dad will pick u up at train at 5 call if hes late"

That annoys me. Also, typos on the covers of textbooks. If they're inside, I'm fine with that. Copy editors are human, I forgive them. But not on the cover, please.

Don't worry, I'm right here with you. Honestly, I wouldn't worry so much. I freaked out when I found typos in my first few submissions. I'm sure just about everyone will have missed something in their writing samples. These people are going to be reading so many samples their eyes probably won't even register them, anyway!

Chin up, friend! We're all in this together!

THIS. I am so sick of revising, over and over again. It's one thing to revise a writing sample when it feels exciting, like a paper you're writing for fun. But once you get to the point where it's going to determine your future and you realize you are MISSING FREAKING QUOTATION MARKS, then you start to freak out. Blahhhhhhh.

Mine is 16 pages, and I'm not too worried about that. My feeling is they'll probably be happy to get a couple of short papers in there, especially if they're "really awesome." Honestly, if I was on an adcomm, I'd surely rather read a really solid 15 pager than one that's pushing the limit, length-wise!
