Is anyone rejected by University Of Texas At Austin?
contretemps replied to PhdWL's topic in Chemistry Forum
I'm guessing this is for the waitlist? Otherwise, wow, what were they doing these past 3-4 months? -
Should I apply during my senior year or after graduation?
contretemps replied to soddenselima's topic in Applications
Why not apply? If you get in then great. If not, you can try again later. -
Doing a survey: How much time did you take to prepare for the GRE?
contretemps replied to ccarmona's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
I took a month off and I studied almost all day, everyday (except weekends). Took the test last September. I think I got decent scores, enough to not get my application thrown out immediately. -
haha yeah, I'm starting to think that being accepted to grad school is 60% luck. It's so random.

Does it matter if you were a "First Pick" or not?
contretemps replied to CarlieE's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I think what matters is that you get accepted to YOUR first pick. Me, I'm just glad I got in. -
Hah, I feel you guys. Basically, I accepted the offer from my top choice school and I still haven't rejected a few others. A part of me feels that something will go wrong and I need some back-up schools when that happens.

Same sentiments. I accepted a PhD offer from JHU last month. Then I was awarded an Erasmus Mundus Masters scholarship (where I'll study in three different countries- France, Italy and Poland). It has always been my dream to go to Europe and I have a gut feeling that I'll be happier, there but logic says that I should do the PhD. Then again, I can't really decline JHU after accepting their offer; that would create a bad impression on me.

Acceptance rate from waiting-list in UPenn
contretemps replied to caesar031's topic in Chemistry Forum
I know there are people who are accepted off the wailtist. It is possible, but the chances are lower. Do you have any other options beside UPenn? -
Hunger Games, Divergent, and Matched. I love me some young adult fiction with dystopian themes.

I love that you have visual aids.

Just waiting on School 3. When can I nudge?
contretemps replied to wheatGrass's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Is school 3 your first choice? -
So where are you going this Fall? Also, which offers have you declined so far? (This is for those who are waitlisted in some schools) I'll start: I finally decided to attend Johns Hopkins for Bioinorganic Chem. So far, I've declined the offer from Tufts and U Florida. **Side question: Is there really such a thing as a wait-list in Chem? I talked to a POI and she said that they make 40-50 offers annually but only ~15 enroll to the program. I guess it all depends on the school reputation.

The Definitions: Fully Funded, Stipened, ...
contretemps replied to biobiobioman's topic in The Bank
It's actually called stipend, not stipened. A quick google search tells you that it's like a salary for doing RA or TA work. Taxes are deducted from your stipend before it is given to you, I think. It is separate from the tuition fee which is usually free for fully funded students. -
How much stipend are you offered for Chemistry Fall 2012?
contretemps replied to contretemps's topic in Chemistry Forum
I'll also add: Tufts University ~28,000 Johns Hopkins ~ 29,330 -
This is in Germany. Apparently, my undergrad degree (I'm an international student) is not eligible for graduate studies. I lack 1-2 years of study or something. It was an error on their part; they shouldn't have accepted me and given me a scholarship if I wasn't eligible in the first place! And they only realized it 2 weeks before the start of classes. I have to tell you, the worst part is the unpacking of my bags.
-
The scenario you are talking about actually happened to me last year. 2 weeks before my flight, the graduate coordinator told me that they are retracting my admission and scholarship. It put me in a shock for weeks but I think things happen for a reason. Now I got accepted in a MUCH MUCH better school so it's all good. But then again, I'm also becoming paranoid that this opportunity will slip away from my hands again.
-
So I'm 90% sure that I'm accepting their offer. But like everbody else, I'm worried about the safety of the area. And also, is it possible to go around without a car?

I LOVE THIS THREAD! This is how I see myself in the next few years:
-
Has anyone else applied for this? They said that we would hear by March if we are shortlisted for an interview. I applied for PhD Chemistry in NUS.
-
Has anyone heard of this? I have seen a few on the results page. I applied for it this year and I got in for SERP-Chem Masters. They said that the final results will be given on late-April.
-
There are instances that one gets to be accepted after being put into the waitlist. But I guess your chances are smaller.
-
Haha, everything I need to know about applying to gradschool I learned from gradcafe

How much is applying going to cost you this fall?
contretemps replied to Kitkat's topic in Applications
Is this for real? I'm also an international student and I don't think it will cost that much unless you applied to like 20+ programs. I voted you up though. -
OMG! Unexpected things/events during applications!
contretemps replied to RortyRorty's topic in Waiting it Out
My LOR writer was in the hospital the week before the application deadlines. Good thing he recovered fast.
