If you aren't being considered for retail and data-entry jobs because you're "overqualified", consider applying for those jobs without disclosing your educational background.

We know almost nothing about you, and there are hundreds of CS MS programs in the US. Since you seem to have no filtering criteria, why don't you just go down the US News list and see if each masters program looks good to you.

Took the GRE test just a few days ago and got 162 for verbal, 165 quant. Major in econ with with ZERO research experience and a decent GPA (3.63/4). So what school/program should I target?? Really need some help

Maybe consider wording things like this post slightly differently in the future, as calling those scores shit could be quite offensive for many people who would be very happy with them.

I think you should be annoyed because ETS gave a 10-15 day window for your scores. If they are going to establish themselves as a huge part of grad school applications, they absolutely need to be on time.

I just got all of my apps submitted--there was a lot of drama and scrambling, but all that matters is that they're in. Luckily I love my job, so the wait will be easy.

i think it's so ridiculous that applying to grad school has to be so expensive. I understand the school fee and the GRE fee but charging $23 to send a print out with regular mail is just plain robbery. The cost of a print out is less tahn $0.10 + stamp and the time it takes for the employee to put it in an envelope it totals maybe $5. Why ETS has to be a for profit institution?!

    Hi
I'm currently applying to graduate programs to do machine learning research. I have more of a statistical background and mostly interested in statistical machine learning. Also curious on vision research.

I think I'm going to apply around 12 universities, so which universities, do you think, have strong faculties in my area of interest? I have been reading a lot on the subject, however I'm still having hard time to eliminating/adding universities to the list. Do you have any other suggestions, or do you think any of these schools are not particularly strong in statistical ml? I'd appreciate any input.

Current list: CMU, Berkeley, Toronto, Princeton, Harvard, GaTech, Cornell, Texas, Washington, UMich, UIUC, UPenn, Columbia, UCSD, UCLA, Purdue, UMCP, UMass

    As for my profile

financial mathematics major from a Turkish university

3.69 GPA, graduated as first in class

    strong letters

senior research project on machine learning, titled "An F-statistic Based Probabilistic Cluster Validity Index" (I'm working on a paper on the subject, haven't published it yet but I think I did a good job on the research and I have a good letter from my research advisor)

RA in the financial mathematics department (since september). Also TA of the courses Probability, Statistics, Financial Management.

    GRE 164Q, 159V, 4A (91,84,48 percentile respectively)

GRE CS Subject Test - Haven't recieved the scores yet but I think my score would be around 70%

TOEFL: 29 (speaking), 24 (listening), 20 (speaking), 29 (writing), 102 total (I took TOEFL test one more time due to the low speaking score. I haven't received the results yet however I think the speaking score will be around 23-24 this time)

Ahh! Thanks for the input. Then again, maybe its just possible that there are different minimum standards for chem then there are for economics. Who knows, considering that this was my first time taking the GRE, I probably wouldn't need to take it "again and again" to achieve quantitative perfection. But like you, I prefer to have a life.

Took the test on 22/10/2011 (paper based)

    Q: 163 (88% = shit)
    V: 151 (51% = shit)
    AWA: 4.5 (72%)

I am screwed up, no engineering college will accept me with that law Q score. Shit.

I'm applying to environmental management programs as well and many of these programs require either a 1000 or 1100 combined on the old scale.

Your verbal converts to about 360 (21st percentile) and your quantitative converts to about 450 (16th percentile), so you're well below where you should be by a lot. I highly suggest taking it again and just committing to a good study programs. I used the official ETS study book and the one from Princeton Review and it helped a lot!

habanero reacted to wildmanatee in Studying isn't that necessary...
My intention wasn't to advise people to not study, rather it was to alleviate the fear some people may experience upon first reading this forum. The first time I visited here, I was a bit worried because I saw several posts from people who studied several months and felt like that wasn't enough. If you're planning to take the GRE, I'm assuming you're smart enough to realize what does and doesn't work for you, so my post was more aimed at people like me who might become overwhelmed by all the posters here who seem to think you need to take a prep course, 10 practice exams, a personal tutor, and 3 different books to get a good score.

And lol at people taking the slacker comment seriously. Apparently some people need to brush up on their critical reading skills. And sense of humor.

I got a 690 V and 750 Q on my preliminary exam and I still felt the need to study. Some people are just perfectionists and others need very high scores to get into their dream schools.

what do you think about the possibility that ETS made some of the august/september quant sections too easy, in a sense that even if you got everything right, you won't get a perfect score (in other words you would have to be lucky to get hard enough sections)? I keep thinking that they can\t do that but then it just seems perfectly possible given that they didn't have any info then as to what percentage fails at what question...

Jesus, these huge ranges I'm seeing for projected 750-800 quant scores are making me so nervous

    Score estimates:
    V- 720-800, actual 165 (96th percentile-corresponds to 680/690)
    Q- 750-800, actual 160 (84th percentile- corresponds to 760)
    Writing- 5.5

So verbal off by 30 but quant at the bottom of the range. In a sense it makes sense that they would be more accurate on quant because they have a bigger percentile range to hit. Essentially my verbal range was 97th percentile to 99th percentile, while the quant was 82nd to 94th percentile.

I took the test on August 4th. Disappointed a little but it's still a really good score, so whatever. If it were any more below the ranges I'd feel like starting an OccupyGRE movement...
