I applied to the MA, but it's still really early notification. -
Penn State (not acceptance post)

Hey, has anyone heard from Penn State yet? There's a mysterious acceptance on the board from, like, 10 days after the applications were due. Maybe an internal student? Just curious. -

I REALLY wish I had applied to more schools this year. I was anticipating a rejection from Duke and Brown, then when I look at what's left, I'm like, "WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING?!" -
Awesome!! Congratulations.

I imagine the adcomm at OSU slowly rejecting all of the remaining applicants one by one and doing the maniacal laugh from The Muppets. -
For which you would earn a posthumous degree from Brown and a MacArthur Fellowship.

Yep. I work in retail now and as a contractor for a bank. A lot of nights, I come home and just do nothing and fall asleep. When I get caught up in my wage laboring and just trying to get along, I never really feel bad about anything I'm doing. When I sit down and think about what I want, though, and the person I want to be, I realize I'm very unfulfilled.

Is anyone else applying to grad school to protect herself from herself? Because that is what I'm doing. To be honest, I'm could be 100% okay working retail, playing video games all night, and watching the Food Network. It's so seductive, but I hate that aspect of my personality. An advanced degree and [potentially] a job in academia feels like the only way to stave off my latent tendency to never think about or produce anything meaningful for the rest of my life.

Someone needs to get the stats from Brown this year. 1000000 applicants for 5 spots.

That reminds me of the Elcor in Mass Effect. The all-Elcor production of Hamlet.

I don't want to sound horrible, but you're probably anticipating incoming freshman to whatever university being MUCH more competent writers than they actually are. You've probably written 1000000 papers with a similar weight and structure as any paper for English Lit. These are little baby eggs that still need to learn to hold a pencil (an exaggeration, but you know.) I think you'll be fine, or just as fine as everyone else in your program.

Movie Adaptations?
perrykm2 replied to todamascus's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
So do I. I love Baz Luhrmann. Even when his films are HORRIBLE, they still are nice to watch, a kind of Wes Anderson effect. But, I've seen some set pictures with costuming, and it looks amazing. I hope it turns out well. Fitzgerald has a very cinematic/visual style of writing, so I have a feeling that B.L. is one of the best people to make an adaptation. -
This is exactly how I feel.

My boyfriend is in his 4th year of a physics PhD, and we're both approximately the same age. I've been working dead-end jobs since graduation. I feel like such a loser compared to him. He's like, "I'M LEARNING TO CREATE ENERGY." And I'm like, "well, let me share my thoughts about Dr. Seuss." -
I don't take anything seriously, even if it is deadly serious.

When I studied abroad in London, we'd have meet-and-greets for international students. We ALWAYS went to Pizza Express. If I ever see another Pizza Express pizza, I'll punch it to death.

My university's Lit Department had a cross-listed Harry Potter course with a science department (maybe physics?,) and it was called The Science of Harry Potter. Everyone wanted into it, but it had only 10 spaces open: 5 for English Lit majors, 5 for whatever science majors. It was a 100-level class filled with seniors. I wanted to take it so bad.

I reread my writing sample that I submitted to all my schools. That was a mistake. Just...don't go down that path.

Don't a lot of students with Film Studies degrees generally end up in Lit programs for their advanced degrees? It seems to happen often enough. At first I felt concerned that I wouldn't have enough English coursework. I started off as a Classics majors and then picked up Literature as a secondary degree, so I have the bare minimum amount of coursework possible, including a handful of cross-listed Classics courses. I'm sure they're looking for certain types of coursework on your transcript, like general theory, advanced theory, upper-level classes that pertain to your specialization, so it wouldn't necessarily be the amount of courses you took but rather if you took the right courses and did well in them. I'm sure your SOP and writing sample will evince that you know what you're talking about and can walk the walk.

Didn't hear any news today, but that means I didn't get rejected yet either. I'm going to fry 2 pull and peel mozzarella sticks to celebrate. -
Yes, he did! But David Eggers wrote the movie script (with some help from his wife, I believe.)

I've been overeating as well, and my nails are totally tore up from the floor up. My boyfriend says if I get into a program, he will buy me an expensive steak. We never eat meat. I have to get in. -

I don't think they're done. I might shoot the department an email at the end of the day if nothing turns over. If so, I'll let you know.
