True, but critical thinking tends to lead one to positions respecting and promoting the autonomy and betterment of the human person, simply due to the fact that the arguments supporting those stances tend to be stronger.

ETA: I do really hate some aspects of this thread, and now my posting here has inadvertently caused more people to read it.

Does no one else find it offensive to discuss our diets on a thread that is discussing obesity? I have little to say about the field of "Fat Studies" as an academic field, and I'm pretty sure that OP just posted this to be offensive and cause 7 pages worth of worthless argument knowing that we would take the idea, get offended by it, get offended by others offensive, there'd be a snarky comment here or there (thanks thestage for playing your part, as always (I'm not even sure if that's a compliment or a dig -- I'll let you be the judge of that)), and it would get way off topic into realms that have little to nothing to do with obesity, the obesity epidemic, the politics of the aforementioned, etc. etc. etc. ETC.

Let me repeat: This thread is stupid.

And I will willingly admit that I have nothing better to do right now because a student is late for her conference, and I'm just waiting for her to show up. So, yes, I could just not read this. But I did. And it was stupid.

In at Georgetown!  The email said I'm a "strong candidate" for funding, but those offers won't go out until next week at the earliest.

Seriously. +1'ed you to makeup for whoever downed you.

I can't even believe it. Not to say there isn't a meaningful conversation to be had about "fat studies," but daaaaamn this is lame. The absolutism regarding the value of body studies and whether or not it is a sub-discipline or a discipline or a field or an object of focus or blah blah blah blah blah in this thread is excruciating. Let's stop being glib about what other people are doing in earnest. It doesn't become us. If you want to have these conversations, have them in non-internetspeak, please.

If I can jump in here, this is probably the stupidest thread I've read in a while.

    That is all.

    OH, and here: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/27/what-housework-has-to-do-with-waistlines/?ref=health

I'm in at Yale. History of Art + Film Studies.

This past hour has been the strangest, most discombobulating experience of my life so far.

After years of browsing this forum, sharing the joys, frustrations, and heartbreaks...it's over. All those rejections, and then I get an acceptance from one of my dream choices.

    Thank you all.

Actually talked to the DGS...they are videotaping the open house, so don't spend the dough unless you are admitted! She told me that they expect to admit students off the "finalist" list since they made only half the admission offers they did last year. But she admitted that she did not know how many, since she does not know how many people who got the first offers are going to take them...they used to have a cohort of 27, but it is going down to 23-25. Much better funding....pretty nice program, the students seem happy with it. If you have an offer from cuny and aren't that interested in it, please make space for us finalists and move on soon....

If y'all don't get in, you should call your DGS' and give them this exact speech.

You will not be starting a fight with me. TNG is easily the best iteration.

Still, ST II, ST IV, and the reboot are all good in my book.

I'm one of the oldest undergrads at school :/ I've really been looking forward to getting into grad school so that I don't feel so awkward and can be around more people closer to my age, even if they are way further along in their studies.

So yay for 27. (my 28th birthday is also the last day of undergrad AND the day the new Star Trek comes out. I die.)
