SLP/Communication Disorders Masters Applicants
Theasaurus replied to SJS's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I wouldn't worry. I also applied to the NonDegree seeking program (to which I was accepted) as a backup plan if I didn't get into grad school. It's essentially a post-bacc program. Since I was admitted to that program, they told me to create a MyUCF account to accept or decline admission. When I created the account, I noticed it had all of the information for my application to the degree seeking SLP program as well. It lists all of my documents as complete, my application as incomplete, but says no decision has been made. I'm guessing you can create a MyUCF account to check your status or just wait for an email when they've made their decision. -

To UCFers: When you check your status online under MyUCF, does it list your application as incomplete? I emailed them about this back in January, inquired as to why it was incomplete since I had all of my stuff in, and they changed it to complete once they confirmed everything was in. About a couple of weeks ago, however, it was switched back to incomplete despite all of the materials listed show up as being received. Anyone else's MyUCF display this? -
Hi! I was accepted to the leveler's track since I don't have any prereqs completed. NAU is my 3rd choice and I'm currently waiting to hear back from my top two choices (CU-Boulder and UCF). I was still beyond excited when I found out I was accepted. My only concern with NAU is out-of-state tuition costs. I know that CU-Boulder will have you pay out-of-state for the first year and then you can apply for residency and pay in-state after that (or so I've been told)?? Some places will absolutely not let you do that, however. Anyone know NAU's stance on this? Or the state of Arizona in general? If we all end up attending we need to plan a gradcafe meetup when school starts. Congrats everyone!

Does anyone know when Purdue or ETSU rejections will be sent? I can only assume I'm both of those lists, but it would just be nice to officially send those two applications to the grave. I noticed on the results board from last year, some people never heard anything back from ETSU. There was no waitlisting, rejecting...only those initial acceptances. I wonder why the hesitation to send rejections on the part of some schools. I just wish all accepting/waitlisting/rejecting would happen within the same day. Only in a perfect application world I guess.... -

Congrats on your Purdue acceptance! You definitely deserve it. I'm not expecting good news from them, but it doesn't matter at this point. I agree, one is all you need. I felt the stress just melt off when I saw that email. -

Omg!!!!!!!!! I was accepted! I really didn't think it was going to happen since I had ZERO prereqs, but it did. Accepted to Northern Arizona's Leveler Track. It's one of my top picks for schools and I'm so (times infinity) happy/relieved/excited/about to vomit. -
I understand completely. I have 6 schools to hear from still, but I'm positive I've been rejected from 2 of those 6. Acceptance emails and calls have already been sent out, so either my email is stuck and phone isn't working or I've made the rejection list. It doesn't help hanging out on the SLP message boards because everyone on there seems to have gotten at least one acceptance. It's pretty discouraging. I still have 6 left (more like 4), so I'll see what happens, but my chances are looking pretty slim. Like you, I'm quitting my job either way and going back for more undergrad classes which is one beacon of hope that's keeping me going. I plan to truck on and try my luck next year or find something equally as fulfilling. The most annoying aspect of all of this is the amount of money I've lost in transcript requests, application fees, and GRE submissions. It was under $1000, but not by much. Good luck to you during the rest of this process and congrats to everyone and their acceptances. Stay strong my friend!

There's nothing quite like Austin in my opinion. There's something for everyone in the city. UT is in the middle of everything, pretty close to downtown, and would definitely say it's in a safe area. There are a lot of great neighborhoods surrouding it. That being said, rent can be a little steep. However, there are campus buses all over the city and if I can remember correctly, you ride the city bus for free if you're a student. Also, it's very bike friendly. Campus is vast but not unbearable. It has some of the best libraries and campus resources around in my opinion. Also, everyone is super friendly, but that may just be Texas in general. I loved my time there and part of me wishes I could go back, but I'm always looking for something new and different. However, after writing this, I've gotten a little homesick. -

No joke!!! Just rip off the bandaid already. Also, I did my undergrad at UT Austin and although I'm non-major and don't know much about the program, I can give some tips on where to live, the campus, etc. if you find yourself attending. -

Ok, I'm hestitant in writing this because I'm afraid to jinx anything, but I received a somewhat cryptic email from one of my schools over a week ago and need help deciphering it. I first thought it was a generic letter because it starts out talking about a delay in their admission process, etc., but the last paragraph goes on to state that "a review of our applications is underway and you are one of our top applicants." ??? "Please be patient and we will be in touch as soon as possible." It was also sent individually to my email (not a mass email) and states my name in the introduction. In the signature was the chair of the search commitee, not some admin or grad student. What does this mean? Has anyone received something like this from any school they've applied to? I'd hate to get my hopes up, but it's way too late for that now. My hopes are wayyyyy up. Should I respond and say "thanks" or should I just wait it out without saying a thing? ----------- On a completely different note, it's so exciting to read through the comment board and results survey and see all the acceptances so far! I'm so happy for everyone on here. This process is so high anxiety just because of the longgggg drawn out wait, but I'm confident that whatever happens, it will all work out in the end. I keep trying to calm myself down because I've already got a pretty good plan B going for me at the moment, but the thought of going through the application and waiting process again does make me a bit squeamish. Oh well! Continued good thoughts for everyone on here! -

Thanks so much for the info engrdad. I didn't apply for assistantship at UGA, so now I have a few more weeks of mental calm. Well, for that school at least! Best of luck to everyone as decisions keep rolling in! -

Does everyone here think the applicant pool has doubled at most schools this year? I didn't apply to Northwestern, but I'm hoping that school was just a fluke in its significant applicant increase. I can see how the # of apps would increase each year but double??? That's just frightening, especially since schools haven't increased their enrollment. Does anyone know the # of applicants other schools have received compared to the past? Also, I totally understand the anxiety that comes with not hearing from schools when others have already received acceptances. I noticed someone heard from UGA-Athens in the results via post, and I've been racing home from work everyday since only to find an empty mailbox I guess it didn't help that they received a transcript after the deadline. -

Oh geez...just received it too. What the heck does this mean? I checked the application portal where we applied and you can also check the status of your application, but it still says "awaiting program decision". I'm not going to get my hopes up too soon. -
Thanks Trina! And thanks for the info on Purdue. It's one of my reach schools along with UMN and UC-Boulder, but I guess I'll never know unless I try. I have a pretty good Plan B that involves taking the prereq courses as a nondegree student as UCF, but I'm really hoping I can bypass the application process a second time by getting into a program now. We'll see... I think your stats look pretty good too as far I can tell. It helps that you took the post-bacc classes and aced them. Also, I've read that 3.0 is usually the required, but 3.5 is really the gpa to aim for. I wish you the best of luck! The wait really is the most horrendous part. I really hate the month of February right now. I wish someone would just lock me in a room and take away my internet access for the next month. It seems as if checking my email and this site has become a full-time hobby.

@redheadedasian... do you think the main reason you didn't get into the programs initially is because of the lack of prereqs or because of the programs you applied to? I only ask because I'm in the same situation you were last year and I can't help but fret out over the fact that I have 0 prereqs completed. I even have the exact GPA as you did! All the schools I've applied to offer 3 year tracks and specifically welcome out-of-majors (I made sure of that), but it's always a question of how many non majors they accept and how many applications they get total. I've never been able to find a definite answer from all of my forum reading and internet searching whether having 0 prereqs negatively affects you application, even for 3 year programs. I guess I'll have to wait and see... Anywho, good luck with your application season. I personally think your stats look pretty good this go around (looked good before too), and now that you have some work and internship experience, i think you'll be a more viable candidate. I'm just hoping that my work experience will help boost my application.

I applied to UCF as well and haven't heard anything about when decisions will be sent out yet or how they will be sent. However, I do know that last year they were sent around early to mid April for Summer and Fall sessions. Even for the Spring 2012 applicants, most didn't find out until late November and early December. I reallllly hope it's sooner this year, especially since I applied to begin in the Summer session. At least I live somewhat close by and moving wouldn't be much hassle if I happen to be accepted (UCF is my first choice btw) -

I'm in the same boat. One of my schools (my top choice) is still listing my transcripts as incomplete even though I sent them back in November and submitted the application around the same time. When I emailed to ask if they just haven't processed all the documents, an automatic reply was sent saying they have been overwhelmed with emails lately. This eased my nerves; I can only assume they are lagging a bit. They also don't send out decisions until mid-April, so the entire review process may take place later, allowing more time for processing materials. Another school sent out a "don't freak out, we're just a little behind" mass email. I submitted that one back in November as well. It only updated to show my application as complete last week. Others updated their application status sites within one or two days of receiving materials. I wouldn't get too worried. As long as you submitted any online materials by the due date, they're officially on time. I would double check any mailings to make sure they went to the correct address, especially transcripts. One of mine went to the undergrad admissions office instead of grad admissions and I didn't realize until after the due date. Luckily, they weren't classes that counted towards my degree, so my application was listed as complete at that particular school. Hope this helps! -
I had encouraging news as well--- I went ahead and emailed the department and the graduate school office explaining the situation and they moved that transcript from being "incomplete and required" to "incomplete and not required". I explained that those classes did not count towards my degree. My application is now listed as in review by the department and has the the word complete listed at the top of the status portal. Oh...how I love that word right now. I had originally intended to do the same as Durden and submit those courses as evidence of language study to boost my application and resume (some ASL knowledege is typically favorable for my program). I guess Georgia will just have to do without that transcript, but at least my application money hasn't been wasted and I'll still get a chance to be reviewed! So I guess what I'm trying to say is don't hestitate to contact your future department to try and clarify any situation you may have. Having multiple missing items is one thing, but one minor hiccup shouldn't be a big deal. Don't be afraid to send a few emails or make a phone call.

I know this topic has been touched on before throughout the forum, but I was wondering if anyone had any insight into late transcripts for a particular school: The University of Georgia. Story is, I have one late transcript for a couple community college classes I took last year that is now over a week late. These aren't classes I consider necessary, just enriching evening classes to satisfy some boredom. I ordered it back in October, but apparently, they sent it to the undergrad admission office instead of the grad office by mistake. I just reordered it today and also sent an email requesting the undgrad office move it over the grad office, as well as another email to the department explaining what happened. However, it was due Jan. 3rd. Has anyone had a similar experience, especially with UGA? Are programs more lenient with transcripts considered less vital (i.e. a 2 course community college transcript) than say my major undergrad transcript (which has been processed)? Any insight would be helpful. Good news or bad would be helpful, but I'd reallly prefer some good news right now. Program is Comm Sciences and Disorders: Speech Pathology btw. Thanks all!!

Can a syllabus be considered a publication?
Theasaurus replied to Theasaurus's topic in Applications
Thanks for your feedback. Putting it under teaching experience does seem like a better fit though I'm still debating if I should include it at all. It was just a standard course syllabus. I guess I didn't mean to say it was tons of work, but it did a chunk of my time outside of my job to lay it out and develop an appropriate course plan for a new minor. This was my first one, so I was bound to analyze and tweek every little detail -
Just as the post reads, I'm wondering if the syllabus I wrote can be considered a publication to list on my application. If not, is there anything else to list it under? The problem is, I'm applying to a graduate program for Speech-Language Pathology, but I'm an out-of-field applicant. My background is in conservation (museum artifacts). I've been working at a campus museum for the past three years, and I was asked to write a syllabus in textiles conservation for their new textiles minor last year. It's really the only publication I have to my name. It was tons of work and it's currently being used for a class, but I'm just not sure it's relevant to my future program. I currently have it listed under my job description for employment even though it was something completely separate from my work duties. Where to include? Should I even bother including? Any thoughts would be helpful. -T
