Are my advisor's actions NORMAL??
unitname replied to MoleMocha's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
I had a similar problem. No one should be subject to such treatment. I am being serious. Contact someone higher up and explain the situation. -
Side note- Many of the posts here seem to be scrutinizing the possibility that he had low GRE scores/GPA, however, on every other board on this site people aggressively support the fact that "scores aren't everything". You can't judge a book by its (albeit sexy) cover. We don't know what Franco's life in academia was like. Did you know that he wrote, filmed, starred in, and directed his own movie? Which won many awards and was actually a great film? The manuscript of that alone, if one of us "normals" had written, would get us in anywhere. Sorry but I think people need to relax. He is famous, yes, but he is also an intellectual. Franc-ly, I'm glad someone in Hollywood is actually IN SCHOOL.

My friend was in a UG class with him at UCLA. Creative writing. Apparently he showed up to every class, did every assignment, participated.. i.e. he was a serious student. Quit sippin' haterade, yall. =)

BU PhD results are showing up..mostly rejections. I wonder if they'll be considered for MA. I applied for MA myself.

GradHooting.. Don't ask me why (well, ok, because I have psychic tendencies =]) but I feel strongly that you have something great in store for you. Hang in there.

here is what this email says: I did everything I could to influence your acceptance...crossing my fingers for you and hope you accept when you (probably) get in.
-
Obviously this is an email hinting at acceptance, if you are still interested in them. They probably want to know if you've accepted any other offers. I'd stop wondering...you're in.

Once, That's a good observation about your worries. We tend to choose things to fixate our anxiety, stress, depression etc on so its definitely interesting that you were able to observe that. So maybe the message here is we should all calm down =)

By the way, how do you feel now that you're in? Are you on cloud 9 at all times? Or was the feeling fleeting? Please share.

Haha, you're right...that makes me even more prone to keep hitting refresh. It's like there is this little elf watching you through his binoculars and updating your app status when you get to the mailbox. Wahh I'm canceling my subscription to the internet!

To those admitted: did your app status change online to reflect admission? Or did you receive news through mail/email without your app status changing? Just being curious and a little OCD =)

I wonder if these people know what we are going through. I am about to get fired from my job for constantly checking my e-mail while I should be teaching. I didn't care/wasn't worried until RIGHT NOW. It is February 10th. I need an answer!!

Personally, I feel "HELLA" pissed!! I didn't know these emotions were in me. I feel like I don't want to even know if I got in anymore, keep your lousy decision...wait..let me see it first. AHHHHHHHHHHH PULLING MY HAIR OUT

Welll...you'd think that Berkeley was confident enough to not get "offended" at such things... I think your mistake is funny! I would also laugh if I read that. I am sure it happens a lot. I would call them immediately. Certainly they know people apply to other schools. And you know what? If your application is kick-ass, and they realize you might have another offer from Stanford, it might get you an acceptance! Who knows. But yea, definitely call! Just let them know clearly that you sent them the wrong SOP. Don't freak out =) Good luck!

Well, as a former Med student turned Humanities student, I would have to disagree with "Joseph". I found science to be fascinating, yet limited creativity to the point where I (personally) couldn't take it. I feel liberated and free in my new field of study, able to explore and interpret the world to no end.

That about sums in up in a nutshell, DrEgg!

How do you avoid the urge to email a POI....I wouldn't even know what I'd say...just remind them that I exist...I'm not going to do it but I want to so bad !!! I feel like a clingy boyfriend

Your tolerance for fear and stress must be much higher. I'm assuming you went through a "if I can do that, I can do anything" breakthrough quite a few times. I can respect that. Everything else must seem much more attainable.
