  1. Hey KMSW, Yeah, they told me to get a syllabus from the college too, which I think defeats the purpose. You want me to demonstrate what was covered in MY stats class with a syllabus from a different teacher? Ugh, it makes no sense. I'm a California resident, went to an accredited CA community college, and as far as I'm concerned, math is still math, no matter where you take it. Oh well, at least LB isn't one of my top choices, just a backup. It's funny saying that because it is so competitive but I really don't hae any desire to go there. Their concentrations are way too narrow and limited for me and what I want to do.
  2. I am seriously FURIOUS with CSULB right now. They called me TODAY to tell me that I didn't submit a syllabus with my stats course. WELL...I took the course four years ago (why on earth would i keep the syllabus???) on the other side of the state and the professor no longer teaches there. I submitted my application the first week of January and my application status said "complete" the entire time. How am I supposed to get the syllabus? I'm in northern California, the community coolege is in southern California. AND I have no idea how to reach the professor. Ugh.
  3. What?! CSUN never called me about an interview!! And I haven't heard a peep from CSULB. Now I'm really starting to get discouraged....
  4. I see many people are getting responses back from big private schools but not so much from state schools, specifically CSU's. I know, I know, state schools get crazy amounts of apps (Long Beach got over 1200 last year) but I'm wondering if anybody has heard anything or contacted the CSU's. I called about a week ago and didn't get any new information... Anyone else just dying to hear from a CSU? I know some people got into CSUDH and CSULA but I had no interest in applying there. I'm interested if anyone heard from CSULB or CSUN or SDSU. I just need to hear from some fellow comrades applying to the same schools as me!! ugh The wait is killing me........
  5. Thanks for the help!! I don't want to feel completely overwhelmed and stressed and lose all of my free time for the next two years. I am just concerned because I am in my final semester of undergrad and my research methods class (i'm a psych major) has turned me into a nervous wreck. I am TERRIBLE at research methods and I'm wondering how this will translate into graduate work. I did, however, apply to SDSU, which apparently has an option where you take an exam at the end of grad school instead of writing a thesis so here's hoping I won't be responsible for much research. I'm just so miserable now as a senior undergrad student that contemplating the magnitiude of grad school makes me sick to my stomach, despite the fact that I have a 3.8 gpa. Maybe it's just the senioritis? Hopefully it isn't burnout!
  6. This might be a stupid question to ask but I do not know anyone going for their Master's in Social Work. (I know several in psych programs) How hard is grad school compared to undergrad? Should I expect to spend significantly more time on classes compared to undergrad? Is the stress level much greater? My general question is: What is it like? School has always come easy to me, and I am an A student, but I am concerned that grad school will put me in way over my head. I can't be the only one who feels like this, right?
  7. sorry, i don't know what was going on with the font ^^^^^
  8. this was on my application status page for sdsu: "The office of Graduate Admissions has received all required transcripts and test scores. Your file has been forwarded to your department for an admission recommendation." That's a good sign, right?!?!
  9. Thank you so much ladybug! I'm the first in my family to get a Bachelor's degree, let alone go to grad school so I've been a little lost throughout this whole process.
  10. Hello all, I probably sound like a complete boob but I'm navigating this whole grad school application alone, so forgive me. I've been looking through past posts of previous applicants... Upon their admission, many of them say they were offered scholarships/grants etc... Do you have to apply for these scholarships, or are they offered to exceptional students? I'm terrified of the cost of grad school (and i only applied to state schools), and I'm looking for as much financial aid as possible. (I never needed it in undergrad because my grandparents used inheritance money from their relatives to pay for my tuition) I'm freaking out. Any help is appreciated.
  11. Hey everyone! I just submitted my MSW apps to the following schools: SDSU CSULB CSUN Has anyone been accepted/rejected from any of the CSU's yet? If so, how long did it take you to hear back? What method was it? (email, snail mail, etc.) And when did you submit your apps? I'm looking forward to hearing back from the schools! (hopefully before April 15th, I'll go crazy if it takes that long) Cheers and good luck to everyone, Tracey
  12. So......... I haven't sbmitted my apps yet. I'm applying to three CSU's. SDSU CSULB CSUN SDSU's is due Jan. 15 and the other two are due Feb. 1st. I have heard that submitting it late in the application period means you're basically screwed because all the spots have been filled by then. (Even though schools claim they saved spots for the end of application period) Is this true? Has anyone been admitted after submitting their app late??? I'm submitting mine on Friday or Saturday this week. ahhhhhhh. Thoughts????????????
  13. I have three OUTSTANDING LOR's. But my personal statement is on the weak side. Thanks for the tip about the NASW! I will definitely use it in my Personal statement. I'm going to have two professors edit it. I just hope I have enough experience. I have 600 hours that can be verified, which is above the minimum, but not by much. I hope I get in!
  14. MSWHopeful--I'm curious, what were your stats when you were admitted?
  15. I'm pretty sure I'm a shoe-in. Not to sound cocky or overconfident. I've spoken with several admissions people and my stats are well above the average accepted applicant's stats. It would be pretty crappy to get rejected on the basis of not submitting the app early. I understand if I'm not a good enough applicant, but if I get rejected because of when I sent my app in, I'll be furious.
  16. I really want to go to an information session, but I'm tied up in the North coast completing my undergrad. I'm originally from socal but I don't think I'll make the sessions in time.
  17. I am applying to three MSW programs for Fall 2012. 1) SDSU 2) CSULB 3) CSUN I unfortunately won't be submitting my applications until late December/possibly early January because my professors that I am getting LOR's from are too busy to write them for me until late December. My question is: Does it matter WHEN you submit your apps as long as it isn't late? Do you have a better chance of being accepted if you submitted your application early, like when the application period opened up? Does anyone know if they just wait for all the applications to come in and then review them? I'm really nervous about this. I have to submit my app late (in the application period, the application will be submitted prior to the deadlines) through no fault of my own. And Yes, I want to wait for these professors to write my LOR's because I know they will be outstanding and well written.
  18. My BA is in psych. I'm graduating in May from a CSU. My overall gpa is 3.2 (i did poorly my first year of college and the community college and then transferred to the CSU last year.) My Psych gpa is a 3.9. My gpa at the CSU for all units completed there is a 3.75. I worked at psychiatric hospital before transferring here. I worked at the hospital with seniors, adults, adolescents & children, ICU (chronically or severely ill patients), and active duty military. (Both inpatients and outpatients alike.) I currently volunteer weekly at a veterans center in my area. My GRE scores were low. I got a 4.5 on the AW section. I am originally from San Diego which I hope helps because CSU's LOVE locals.
  19. This is the email the admissions person sent to me: "Paid/internship/volunteer experience all count toward the 500 hours. The only portion of the GRE that is evaluated is the writing portion and they expect a 4 out of 6. You still have to take the whole thing for the University to accept the score, but they only look at the writing portion. The GPA is the greatest indicator of graduate level performance and is given the most weight. The average GRE is 3.2 overall and 3.4 in the last 60 units."
  20. I didn't ask about how they fill spots. I know for undergrad they wait until after the deadline to start reviewing apps. I won't be turning mine in until late December because of one of my profs. He can't my letter of rec until Dec. 20th. What's your concentration? I'm going for Direct Practice.
  21. I contacted SDSU because that is my first choice. They expect a 4 on the analytical writing section, but they don't care about your other scores at all. The admissions person I talked to indicated that GPA is weighted most heavily, followed by personal statement, LORs, and experience. Hope this helps. Tracey
  22. i haven't yet submitted my apps but i'm already freaking out. i just want to get in.
  23. Hi, Most CSU's, from what I understand, they send out acceptance letters BY April 15th. I am a first time applicant for Fall 2012. I will not turn in my applications until December. (One of my professors doesn't have time to write me a letter of rec until then) I am applying to: SDSU Humboldt State USC CSUN I was curious if you could post your stats from when you applied. I really have no idea where I stand and I am navigating this whole grad school application process myself. My stats Major GPA: 3.9 GPA at university (I am a transfer from a community college): 3.75 Overall (Includes everything from community college and at my undergrad university): 3.36 I take the GRE this month. (The only program that requires it out of all the places is SDSU and they only look at the analytical writing score which I expect to do really well on) I am applying to: SDSU (first choice) USC CSUN Humboldt State I want to get my MSW in direct practice and then get my LCSW. I want to work with veterans at the VA. I worked at a psychiatric hospital for six months but had to quit to move to go to my undergrad program. I have extremely little volunteer experience. One of my letters of rec I know will be outstanding. One will be strong. One will be positive but probably pretty generic. (I never got really buddy-buddy with any professors except the first one) SDSU is my first choice. Do I have a shot at any of these schools? Thank you so much, Tracey
  24. I am interested in what your stats were when you got accepted! I am applying for the 2012 fall semester. Did you apply anywhere else? Accepted anywhere else? Any info is VERY appreciated!! Thanks
  25. If anyone who was accepted could give me their stats that would be fantastic!!!! I am applying to SDSU's Fall 2012 MSW. It is my first choice and I'm nervous I won't get in. Major GPA: 3.9 Last 60 Units: 3.75 Overall: 3.36 (I screwed up at community college) Worked at Psych hospital for 6 months. Volunteer at Vet Center every week GRE: Haven't taken it I want to get into the Direct Practice Concentration. I want to get my MSW and take the exam to get my LCSW. I want to work in San Diego at the VA medical center with vets.
