What's your poison?
MrBrooklyn replied to MedievalMadness's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Yeah, I've tried everything that the grocery stores around me carry. The Chocolate Yeti is great too. Also a fan of the Hiberation Ale, which probably gave me the extra layer of fat I needed to survive this craptastic winter. -

Wait listing is NOT the end!

What a happy ending! Congratulations! -
After a terrific visit, I've decided to accept the Master's offer at IU-Bloomington. Future applicants reading this thread, feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions about the program. (And keep in mind that everyone, Master's and PhDs alike, gets full tuition waivers and stipends in exchange for teaching, which was a big plus for me.) I also turned down NYU, USC, and Florida today, so I hope that helps anyone waiting for any of those.

What is the deal with Iowa this year? Maybe they've just abolished their Master's program.

Same here, VT. Got my rejection tonight, which was disheartening but ultimately remedied with some friends and a bottle of wine. Looks like I'll likely be heading toward IU-Bloomington instead.

First school visit this week. Will I charm my way into an extra fellowship or have my offer cruelly rescinded through a series of comic mishaps?

What if I don't get accepted anywhere?

J'ai enseigné en France, et c'était vraiment excellent. -

Teaching English abroad can be a great way to go. It led to the best years of my life. -
Thanks. And congrats to you on getting accepted to one of my top two choices, which I didn't manage to do.

Well, I was accepted, but there are other programs I've been accepted to that I prefer.

And it looks like NYU MAs are starting now, since I just received an email.

I just spoke to someone at Iowa about the Film Studies MA. Was told decisions would "probably go out early next week."

CUNY FL12 Acceptance
MrBrooklyn replied to TripWillis's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I think it's a great idea, but I hope it's the first in a series, because I can't make it tonight! (And I didn't apply to CUNY either. And I only applied to two English departments. But still, I'm a baby dressed like a penguin, so you know you want to include me.) -
Fun times visiting my parents: Mother: I could understand analyzing films before, but now directors give interviews and they say what their films mean, so what's left for you to do? Father: Who cares about that? How are you going to make any money? Mr. Brooklyn: Um... I have to go stand over there now.

Post-Acceptance Stress & Misc. Banter
MrBrooklyn replied to TripWillis's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
As we've learned from another thread, when in doubt, follow the CIBs/CIGs. -
I say go to Chicago. Better looking people (or at least more variety) and better tasting food (or at least more variety). Problem solved!

Somebody should organize a drinks night in New York, where we could all panic and commiserate in person. (Also, I want to see what Cquin and TripWillis actually look like.)

This thread has turned very encouraging for this cute indie Brooklyn boy.

I'm also vacillating, and I found it pretty helpful to look at previous course directories, and see the classes that were recently offered at both programs. (You can take into account things like the breadth of choices, the overall focus, the gaps and omissions...) It may give you a more tangible sense of what your academic future might look like.

Has anyone made a decision yet? If so, where are you going? If not, where are you leaning?

I'm in the midst of making the same decision. And right now, instinct is pointing me toward the Master's program. Let's be crazy and roll the dice!
