      I used to daydream that at this time of year I'd have to put Harvard on hold because Yale was calling and then I'd accidentally put us all on three way and share a hearty, scholarly laugh!

    At a recent family dinner, my aunt asked, "So you mostly want to do these programs for fun?" I tried to explain that film studies was actually a pretty competitive, rigorous, and difficult field based in critical theory, and not just screenings of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and X-Men: First Class. Then I just sighed and said, "Yeah, for fun."

    I'm sure I'm not the first to have this epiphany, but humanities grad programs should really just eliminate the use of the GRE. I'd much rather go through the agony of preparing and submitting two writing samples, something that is at least a direct indicator of my future scholarly potential. It sure beats the arbitrary agony of a four-hour torture session detecting whether I can compose banal responses to banal prompts and can correctly apply the formula for the volume of a cylinder while trapped in a setting combining the best of cubicle culture and detention facilities.

    I missed one in my SOP and one in my writing sample and I reread each one about five thousand times. (And everyone else who read them missed them as well, so bdon19 is probably right.)

    I'm reading Swamplandia! It's enjoyable, if anxiety-inducing to consider that it was written by someone in her twenties.

    For schools that were a particularly good fit for my focuses, I put the few other schools that were the strongest fit, to show that I wasn't applying haphazardly. Don't know if that's the best strategy, but that's what I did. Ultimately, I don't suspect it makes much difference.
