  1. Harvard peeps:

I emailed the graduate director yesterday politely asking about the status of my application. I received the following response:

"The committee is meeting these two weeks and some replies may begin to be sent out in two weeks from the Graduate School."

So, does this mean that the interviews aren't mandatory? I don't know what to make of this response.

I guess I'll just tell myself that if I don't get an interview date, then I should just pretend I didn't get in. Then, if I do, it'll be a pleasant surprise. LOL

Congrats and good luck to all! :)

I was wondering the same thing... :hugs:

  2. Congrats PhDreaming! And, of course, busbus and Ling304!!!! I hope everything goes OK with your interview. Just don't freak out, you've made it this far, that's a great sign. You'll do fine, and we're here to support our fellow linguists. :)

I didn't hear from Cornell today, so it's probably a no from them. It looks like they send out rejections by mail about a week after acceptances. So I'll brace myself for that.

Feel ya. Goes for Harvard as well. :(

  3. The schools should make an RPG in which the hero is our almighty WannabeGrad. There are 10 big levels, and you have to collect data, documents and LORs instead of coins like Super Mario. You fight one member of the admission committee after completing each level. And to stay alive, you have to refresh your status every 30 seconds (it's like checking inbox). If you fail to defeat the last boss - your POI - there's a consolation prize - you get another game (a new acceptance) for free via snail mail in March!

I should do this, really. This is my new research proposal, could be good for Comp. Sci., Psychology etc.

  4. Yes, no one knows what music theory is, even though I think most high schools offer it as a course.

I gave up explaining linguistics as well.

    Before:

    - Hey there, what are you applying for?

    - Linguistics, historical/comparative.

    - The same as your BA and MA?

    - Yeah.

    - So... is that a science or what? How many languages do you speak? You're going to be a translator, right?

    - :AAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH:

    After:

    - Hey there, what are you applying for?

    - Languages.

    - Which one?

    - All of them.

    - Cool.

    It's easier.
