  1. At least they let you combine experience in both fields....
  2. There should be Grad PLUS loans also available for the remaining amount up to COA (tuition + cost of living).
  3. If you're sure about wanting to run the progressive Catholic school, I would choose BC. Not only will you be going to a Catholic school, but you'll also get some connections to many more Catholic educators in the US than you would at Vanderbilt. Speaking for Vanderbilt, Nashville is definitely a city (but not a "big" one), and the professors have a fairly good age range mix (with a few more less-than-60 professors than other ed schools I've visited). That said, Nashville doesn't compare to Boston; if you have any particular questions about living in Nashville, feel free to PM me.
  4. Now TC just offered me $15.5k a year. =| Decision-making is becoming difficult.
  5. No real merit money, but did get $12k in tuition reduction/grant + work study + Perkins
  6. At most schools (and presumably Harvard), that would be the case (and to the extent that you have different types of federal loans awarded, then the ones with the worst terms, e.g. highest interest/unsubsidized, would be the first to go).
  7. I've got it mostly narrowed down to Stanford (also had a good visit there) and Michigan ... about 10 days left to decide.
  8. Stats are in my signature. My personal statement talked a bit about my background in higher education admissions, what I think is wrong with it/can be improved, and what I hope to get out of my degree.
  9. It's basically between Stanford and Michigan. At this point, if I get positive news on an assistantship I'm after at Michigan, I'm fairly sure I'd head there. Without the assistantship, I'd still be undecided between the two, in part because they're very different programs. Being the nerd that I am, I have a pro/cons list I'm compiling for both schools and they're neck-and-neck with each other.
  10. For those of you who want tips on where to live in Charlottesville and such, definitely feel free to give me a holler. *sneezes from all of the pollen in the air*
  11. I realize my reply comes a bit late but I had my visit with the higher ed program on March 23. I was very impressed with the program and Michigan.
  12. Got back from visiting Stanford and had oodles of magazines and credit card offers in my mailbox. Also got my Harvard finanical aid package info.
  13. Although I haven't finalized my decision yet, I'm probably going to give up my spot at Harvard later this week. For those of you headed to HGSE, you'll be a great group of people.
  14. For those on the waitlists at Columbia and Vanderbilt for the Master's higher ed programs, I should be turning down my seats at those schools in the next couple of days ... and will probably turn down Harvard, too. Hope this frees up a spot for one of y'all.
  15. While I can't speak to Harvard specifically, for federal aid purposes, you cannot receive a total financial aid package that exceeds cost of attendace (tuition + living expenses). Generally, if you receive new sources of grants/scholarships, financial aid offices reduce the amount awarded for your least favorable loans first (Grad Plus in most graduate school instances).
  16. If anyone has any insights into Stanford or Michigan, it would be great to hear from you, since I'm probably going to end up picking between Michigan's higher ed program and Stanford's POLS program (both Master's-level).
  17. Finished up my Michigan visit last week and was very impressed with their higher ed program. Headed out to Stanford's POLS and SUSE this weekend.
  18. Visited the Admissions office today, and they said finaid decisions should be made by the end of next week, and that a finaid award letter will probably go out then or the first week of April.
  19. Having known and talked with some Master's students at the Curry School at the University of Virginia, all of them have told me they would have taken Harvard or Stanford over UVA if they had an opportunity, They were a mix of k-12 (future) teachers and other education programs ... and the ones that had substantial or full-ride scholarship money still said they thought Harvard or Stanford would be a good choice. The non k-12 teachers at Curry are having a very difficult time securing jobs, local area or otherwise (the teachers are doing fine job-wise).
  20. Interviews for GA positions at Michigan and a couple other local organizations are being held on March 23 for higher ed students. They say that most people get one by the time they start the program.
  21. For Michigan, GA offers should go out before the acceptance deadline.
  22. I also have premium access (I need it for my job ... although not the education rankings specifically). If you're interested in a particular school, you may PM me as well. In other news, I was admitted to Columbia today and managed to go 5 for 5 for my application cycle. [squee!]
