  1. Congrats!
  2. Just admitted to Stanford's MA in POLS!
  3. Congrats to all who got into Michigan!
  4. I definitely had Ann Arbor a lot farther west of Detroit in my mind until I looked at the map. [My only direct experience with the State of Michigan is a detoured Amtrak train and a 5-minute connection at DTW]. On an unrelated note, I was pleasantly surprised by how many (and somewhat varied) CSHPE internship options are currently posted.
  5. I plan to attend the Visitation Day on March 23.* *I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't realize how close Ann Arbor and Detroit were until I was looking for airline tickets. TexanLex: Congrats on being accepted! For Stanford and Harvard, Stanford should have Master's decisions out around March 3-7, give or take a few days, and Harvard should have Master's decisions out by March 11, give or take a few days.
  6. The decision was emailed from CSHE. My Friends account didn't immediately update ... I think you have to be officially offered admission by Rackham (after being recommended for admission by CSHE) before your Friend account reflects the admission offer.
  7. Thanks Double Shot and bigred65! Good luck and happy e-mails/letters to all.
  8. It was pretty decent, but basically what you'd expect (there was a pretty good career presentation and information on financial aid). Definitely feel free to PM me if you're interested in specifics.
  9. Thanks! The e-mail subject line was descriptively named "Application Status."
  10. Got an e-mail acceptance into the HEA (MA) program today.
  11. I've heard from Vanderbilt and Michigan.
  12. Children can be dependents of their parents as long as the children do not provide more than half of their own support (there are also other criteria that need to be met ... notably age). See: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p501/ar02.html#en_US_2011_publink1000220886
  13. At the top of the forum pages, there's a series of tabs; the right-most one is "Submit Results." Click on it, and you can fill out your application information.
  14. "Why is someone who is about to get a JD trying to get into a Master's program? What horrible flaws is he hiding? Oh wait, his law school doesn't calculate a GPA but still gives out grades. He must be failing law school, and wants to make a career out of being a perpetual student. Well, not at our school, buddy."
  15. While I am not a Mac person, I do have quite a bit of experience with computers and software. Since your current version is not really out-of-date and seems to be working well for you, why potentially ruin a good thing? Plus, if you wait a bit, they should have patches/service packs out to address most of the major issues. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
  16. For schools that allow their doctoral program candidates to select the Master's program admission as an alternative, I believe the doctoral applicants (who were rejected from the docotoral program but accepted into the Master's) tend to find out first, too.

I don't find it particularly negative, but then again, I use it. For me, it's a useful way to tell that the person has not only applied to XYZ schools, but also that they do not have decisions yet from those schools. Plus, I include the date of the decision, which might be helpful to future applicants.

Anything in particular that you want to know? For housing, most of the decent housing in C'ville is around the same price. There's a tradeoff: the closer to UVA you are the more you'll pay (or the lower the quality of the apartment), while you can pay less and/or get better quality if you live farther away from the University. There's a functional city and university bus system, plenty of grocery stores (including a few 24-hour ones), and about one of every big box store ... plus a small mall with department stores and a downtown pedestrian mall with smaller businesses.
  19. I would recommend TurboTax for those who feel comfortable entering their own information (either the free or paid version, depending on if you qualify for the free version). I would caution students (and people in general for that matter) against using H&R Block, ProTax, Liberty Tax, Jackson Hewitt, and the like. The primary way that they make money is by getting you to take out refund anticipation loans (or something similar) and by adding as many lines/schedules to your return as possible. Furthermore, if you have some post-high-school education, you should be more than qualified to understand taxes yourself ... understand that their tax preparers use essentially the same software you can buy, but charge you a big premium to use them instead of the software. If you have more complicated tax situations, you can try a your local IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for free tax preparation and e-filing if you make less than $50,000 (some sites have other specific requirements), or pony up the money for a CPA or tax attorney ... which, if your tax situation is complicated, is going to often cost no more (and often less) than places like H&R Block.
  20. Application and personal stat info is in my signature. Applying for a Master in Higher Education Administration.
  21. Applied for their Ed.M. in Higher Education Administration. Stats are in my signature.
  22. Congrats to all who have been accepted! I was accepted into the M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration program about 1.5 weeks ago. I'll be attending the Feb. 2 afternoon event and Feb. 3 Visitation Day events.
