  1. Hello, I'm not sure this is the right place in the forum, but it has to do with my decision, so I guess it's fine posting it here. I have received several offers for next year and a university in particular has been very helpful, sending me contacts, students as well as faculty emails. The program coordinator told a teacher about me, whose interests are similar to mine, and send me his email so I can contact him. I'd love more insight on the program, but that professor probably has better things to do and I can ask students about it. As the coordinator went through the trouble of giving me the teacher's email information, I guess I should write him : but I've never done this, and don't have anything particular to say.. Have any of you ever written to professors to let the know you exist or are interested in their work ? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you
  2. Last time I went to the US, the limit was 23kg per suitcase (the equivalent of 50 pounds), so that pretty much limits the amount of things you can bring. And as I'll be spending at least 5 years in the US (and probably will stay longer), I was hoping to bring most of my stuff. But I might as well do it progressively. Thanks for your answers, the online suitcase definitely seems worth lokking into (I'll ceck airline by airline, there must be at least one that is understanding for this kind of thing).
  3. Thank you for these answers. The NYU waitlist system just seems so strange. If they don't have ranks, it must be like a lottery system...? Some things are probably better kept unknown. And thank you for the school "ranking" information, this explains why I read a lot about the University of Iowa or Rochester, which I had never heard about in Europe. It feels so hard to pick a school that feels right !
  4. Hi, I'm new on this topic, I'd been following the "Waiting it out: theatre, performance, cinema PhD want-to-be 2012" thread and hadn't realized there was one just for film ! What does "unranked waitlist" mean ? Will the people on the waitlist be chosen randomly if any spots clear ? I'm an international student so I'm not well aware of program rankings : could any one tell me what the major programs are ? Thank you
  5. I was told that foreign offices usually know how to translate grades, so I didn't enter in american GPA but gave my grades with my national scale. I also had the school write a letter with my rank for each year in the school, and wrote a separate letter that I included in my application to explain my situation.
  6. Thank you very much for your answers. I haven't been on the forum in a while (to avoid the stress of thinking about acceptance/rejection, I'm still waiting on most the schools I applied to). It's nice to see you succeeded in your moves. As I'll be moving alone, I'll have a limited number of suitcases, so shipping boxes will probably be quite helpful (for books and such). Thanks for the service recommendation Ennue, I'll look into it It's the first time I'm moving, this is pretty exciting !
  7. Hey ! I'm planning on going to grad school to the United States next year for a PhD, so staying a few years. I was wondering if any of you moved from Europe. How did you get all your stuff accross the altantic ? Did you keep it to the minimum and a suitcase was fine ? DId anyone send boxes ? I have a lot of books and things I need to bring with me that are pretty heavy, and I haven't been able to figure out how to move... Any input on your experience or advice would be more than welcome
  8. I haven't heard anything from anyone yet, and many people seem to have received some feedback from the universities I applied to (or so the survey says). Could that mean I'm waitlisted ? I'm an international student and don't understand this system at all...
  9. Hi, I saw on the site that people had been accepted and rejected by website at UCSB and Berkeley. I applied at both those universities, but don't know how to check. Could someone help me out? Thank you
