  1. I generally write up notes on a legal pad, and if they're really important, I'll type them up later. Nice to know things are stored in various places, too.
  2. Argh! I just visited Minneapolis for U of MN's Critical Media Studies/Comm MA/PhD, and I'm more conflicted than ever! I thought the visit would really help clarify my decision, but it's really only made it more complicated. What has everyone else done in this situation?
  3. whomp whomp indeed. God, that was a shitty form letter, and a bizarre send-off! Something like "people we reject end up doing really well in graduate programs elsewhere."
  4. @MediaMom: Congrats! Awesome! In less cheerful news, I was rejected from UW-Madison. At least I know everything now, though. Congrats to all who were accepted!
  5. I wish my factors were so easily prioritized: I'm mostly basing my decisions on research fit, atmosphere, and money, but I have my significant other to think about, moving to a place where I/we don't know anyone, MA vs PhD, and a whole lot of other crap to think about. I've been trying to rationally set out pros and cons, but I think going on visits, talking to professors and graduate students, sitting in on grad seminars, and hanging out off-campus have really been helpful for me. Right now, it's between Iowa (PhD in Rhetoric and Discourse) and Minnesota (MA in Rhetorical Studies or Critical Media Studies), but I haven't heard from my #1, Wisconsin-Madison (MA in Rhetoric at Comm Arts).
  6. You win. I mean, my mom gets her chickens in the mail, but that's a weird exception, obviously.
  7. 2.29: A book for class (last trimester starts Monday!) from amazon - keep An insert for the local grocery store - keep for coupons I usually don't get mail, so to see something poking out of the box this afternoon was a little stressful.
  8. Yep. That's what he used. And he didn't apply this season--he didn't have a writing sample that he thought was good enough and had some rec problems.
  9. Mmm, he seems pretty focused on top 25 schools, and the schools I've been accepted to...aren't in the top 25. Definitely not terrible, I'm sure, but he's a little obsessed with ranking. I'm in Comm, so it's not exactly the same. Right now, his goal is academia--he's not interested in business or government.
  10. I see UW-Madison acceptances! Anybody here receive one? Or is someone just trolling and messing with me?
  11. Aaaaaand I'm wait listed at IU-Bloomington, as per a lovely email from Kathy Teige. At least it's not a rejection outright?
  12. Welp, that explains it--I'm abroad and my roommate is at home on spring break. Would it be weird if I called/emailed the grad secretary at Indiana to check? As for UW, hey, that's a relief, I guess...I'm rhetoric, not media. We'll see.
  13. I thought someone heard from UW? It was posted in the results survey a while ago, then confirmed here. Uffda. I haven't heard from UW, UMinn, UIUC (but a late application deadline, I guess), and IU-Bloomington
  14. Mmm, you have good points, and it's not as if I haven't tried to communicate these concerns already--he just refuses to make decisions until I've been accepted/rejected everywhere. This sounds stupid, but I doubt he did these things deliberately--he's generally a huge space cadet and just let time get away from him. But that's another thing: I expressed the importance of the issue, and he did nothing. Eh, if all else fails, we'll do the leap frog technique--things just might get dicey between then and now.
  15. I applied to 2 phd and 4 masters programs and have only heard back from phd. Not a peep from the other schools.
  16. Ah! That's actually super comforting to hear. And I've been bitching at my grad school friends, who definitely roll their eyes.
  17. Also, has anyone seen that certain programs admit masters students on different timelines than doctoral students? I'm not even out of undergrad yet, so a lot of programs required me to apply for the masters even though I intend to get the Ph.D; any difference?
  18. Yeah, that's...what I'm worried about. Settling, that is. I'm sure getting jobs will be a huge treat </sarcasm>, but that's another bridge to cross when we come to it. Silly academia. And what happens if we break up for an unrelated reason after making so many arrangements to stay together? Theoretical happy ending, indeed. Uffda. Too much to think about.
  19. Well, hey, good for you that it worked out. With some luck, maybe everything will work out for me. I'd hate to think I'm going to spend my life with this guy for nothing.
  20. Neither! Central IL--but I have some pretty close Norwegian relatives that I see fairly often.
  21. Nice! I didn't think of that! I'll try to get myself to one in a larger area than I'm in now--the smallish town I'm in is a little poor to be donating leather bags to Goodwill.
  22. Your whole outlook looks wonderful. Not stressing is I think the biggest issue at the moment. I'm a little frustrated that he decided late to do philosophy; it's a lot more restrictive than English, and we had planned on composing a list of schools we both could do, but he never got around to his version of the list. It'd be nice if I were only going for a masters; right now I'm accepted to 2 straight doctorate programs and I'd rather not move more than I need to. Maybe that's just stubbornness on my part that's going to need to change if this is going to work out...
