  1. GPA and GRE scores will only help you pass the preliminary screening which are often done using a software. My program pays more attention to LOR, work experiences and how they are relevant to chemistry, and solid reasons why you want to pursue higher education in chemistry, your commitment to a research lab. I worked in the same lab for 3 years as an undergrad when I was applying to PhD programs.
  2. There is a computational group in my program with only 1 grad student... not even a postdoc......
  3. Ain't gonna publish any of my findings in journals with an impact factor less than a 3.0, don't care how "specialized" they are <_<

  4. write, edit, submit, repeat :D

Me too! One week left of relaxing.

  13. another thing that annoyed the shit out of me was when this coworker of mine telling me how poor he is and that he doesn't have any extra money (not even 10 dollars) to spare to buy a gift for our collaborator from another lab who was graduating. Not to mention, he was bragging to people that all his nuclear family members are medical doctors. Some people are just unbelievable, and you wondering why I'm always so pissed off on this site because the people I have to deal with on a daily basis
  14. Sometimes I wish I could just tell people that I'm a chemist instead of I'm a _____ (insert your division or specialty) chemist
  15. Would you self-cite your own work?

It seems to me that in many cases self-citing is not only warranted, but necessary.

  18. bxtching in public like lunch room, elevator, social events, bathroom...., don't get me wrong, I think it's alright if you do it privately
  19. That's not what I said, but you're right, it is not my problem and I wanted to stay out of it. However, I decided to get involve because my PI was going to kill my coworkers' project because of no research progress for about 3 years now and I didn't want to see them leaving the program with a terminal degree. I won't be so upset if they were actually trying hard to move forward, but no, they still work from 9-5, 5 days/week .
  20. So far so good, it just seems like I'm the one of very few people in my group is actually pulling the weight in term of getting papers out and applying for grants.
  21. My boss thought my coworker faked his data during the group meeting today, he showed a lot of "promising" results but didn't show any control experiments . He said he "ran" out of sample, or instrument was "acting" up. I was like, "gurrrrrlllllll puuuuuuhhhhhealze"
