  1. She dated a guy from my department awhile ago but they broke up because he graduated. She is now dating another guy from another group 10 ft away from our lab, that guy is a douchebag and always tell people that he works 80+ hrs/week and is going to publish his work in Science or Nature. Oh yeah he's half way through his 4th year and still have no papers.
  2. Her research progression was very fast after she "joined" the group for about 2 months because she would ask other guys (including my PI) questions like, "oh what should I do next?" "do you have the protocol for it?" "does the protocol work?" "do you know how to do it?" "can you show me how to do it?" "how effective is your method?" "how much samples do I need for xxxxx experiments?" "can I see how you did your experiments? like the conditions you used?" "can you do this calculation for me so I don't mess up?" Yeah after for about 2 months people were like, "yeah....so this is HOW your research progressed so fast". I think the most annoying part was that she would just ask other people for answers instead of trying to figure it out by herself. She has made statements like, "I want to be the only girl in this group" for several times now..
  3. This female coworker of mine was telling another female undergrad that she should never get married and she should be the "man" of a relationship. This really annoyed the shit out of me especially when this female coworker pretty much relies on other male coworkers in the lab and outside the lab for (1) design all of her experiments (2) teach her "how" to use stuff instead of finding out herself (3) previous exams of the classes she was taking/plan to take (4) troubleshooting her experiments I mean, really? She sure knows how to use people for her personal gain. She found out my PI was on the admission committee and decided to "volunteer" in our lab 3 months before she graduates from undergrad, and all of the sudden she got really into research work and decided to apply to the PhD program at our school. The worst part was that she told my PI, "if I don't get in PhD at this school then I'm gonna volunteer in your lab for another year and try again". I mean, really? what a sketchy SOB, she shouldn't have put my PI in a such awkward situation.
  4. I've been spending 350+ on food (both grocery and dining out) in the past 6 months and that's a big chunk of money based on the amount of stipend I'm getting. As for now, I have a budget for $150 for grocery next month ($37/week) and I'm not sure how realistic that is
  5. I decided to buy the http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004XC6GJ0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1yesterday, it's compatible with Time Warner (it was on their approved modem list). Also, Amazon is selling their Fire Phone for $199 (unlocked) and I am thinking about switch to prepaid phone instead of paying 70/month on phone bill...
  6. omg yes This guy on my floor kept telling first year students that he works 70+ hrs a week =.= and 80% of the time he's just doing protein purification....I mean...really......purification is not a real experiment unless you're dealing with membrane proteins.......just saying..... My coworkers always give me the crazy eyes whenever I say, "this is a data-driven lab"
  7. Do you buy your own modem or just rent it from your cable company? I am thinking about get a used one soon. http://q13fox.com/2015/01/02/comcast-and-time-warner-cable-hike-modem-fees-as-much-as-33-time-to-buy-your-own/
  8. Yes, I've known 3 people on my floor had to change their project completely because research progression was way too slow.
  9. 12 monkeys is a weird show

    1. isilya

      isilya

Did you see the original movie with Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt? It's so good/weird!

  10. work smart, plan your experiments carefully and intelligently. I've seen plenty of 3rd, 4th year students come in 6 days/week for 10 hrs/day and still have no papers published. Some established professors aren't willing to publish findings that aren't significant enough to get accepted to very good journals even though the materials are good enough for a decent journal.
  11. You are covered by the grad school for the first year only. Then, after you chose an advisor, your funding will be covered by that person.
  12. So this postdoc published 3 papers in no-name journals with no IF...what in the world?!

  13. made a peanut butter and chocolate pie using 2 different chocolate crust, 2 different chocolate toppings, and peanut butter filling with extra butter.

  18. Which one would you choose to learn and why? I am very fortunate to have the luxury to pick one but I like both I am somewhat decent with coding and programming (C++) For DFT calculation, there is a faculty is willing to mentor me whereas for bioinformatics I am most likely will need to sit in a class and learn it myself, I have colleagues who are bioinformaticians.
  19. This bxxch told me all his findings can be published in Nature or Science and I was like, "bxxch please <_<"
  20. ACS publications offer editing service but I don't know if they do that for dissertation though
